Viacom 'Gaining Real Traction' with International Mobile Deals, Top Executive Says
Viacom "Gaining Real Traction" With Int'l Mobile Deals, Top Executive Says
Viacom's International networks unit CEO David Lynn discusses the firm's 5 million subscribers and not copying peers' direct-to-consumer strategy, instead focusing on "deeper and more flexible" content partnerships.
Viacom, the company behind the likes of Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and Paramount Pictures, has been one of the most aggressive entertainment giants when it comes to striking carriage and licensing deals with mobile phone operators around the world.
In 2018, Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) reached an agreement with mobile powerhouse Telefonica in Latin America that became its first in which a telecom company agreed to carry all of its international flagship TV networks, a selection of its mobile streaming apps and its Video on Demand (VOD) content. Under terms of the deal, Telefonica's Movistar Play service has been carrying live feeds of Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., MTV, Comedy Central and Paramount Channel TV channels in the region. In addition, a selection of Viacom’s mobile streaming apps, including for MTV, Nickelodeon (Nick Play) and Comedy Central, are available to Movistar Play subscribers, along with on-demand content.
Last week, the company unveiled its first mobile distribution deal with a major player in a big European market. Under the agreement with telecom giant BT Group's mobile provider EE, MTV's recently launched first-ever direct-to-consumer subscription VOD streaming app, MTV Play, will become available to EE subscribers.
Beyond the two landmark agreements, the company last year also struck its first mobile distribution deal for the Paramount+ streaming service in Sweden with Scandinavian telecom giant Telenor.
The mobile push is part of Viacom President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Bob Bakish's focus on positioning Viacom for the future by "accelerating our transition to next-generation platforms," as he has described it, to reach existing fans in new ways as well as "incremental audiences."
All in all, Viacom International Media Networks says it now has 21 mobile-only content deals with 17 operators across 30-plus countries. While the company doesn't disclose financial terms, industry watchers say they include a mix of deals, with some being monthly fee-per-sub arrangements, others using a revenue-share model with a minimum guarantee and others being fixed-price deals.
"Internationally, our flagship brands are actually getting real traction on mobile networks," David Lynn, President and CEO of Viacom International Media Networks, tells THR. "The financials in mobile are similar to, in some cases actually improved versus, what we see on the pay TV side."
While he admits that the company's total user base reached with the deals so far isn't huge yet, momentum is encouraging. "We already have 5 million subscribers paying to access our mobile video services," he tells THR. "I am very pleased with the progress we have made. And the growth is very strong, it is almost tripling year-on-year. And I still see huge opportunities. We have done a lot already, and I really believe that mobile represents a major market opportunity for us."
Lynn in that context mentioned that there are 3.7 billion 4G mobile subscribers outside the U.S. "You have a number of markets where mobile has the opportunity to leapfrog linear pay TV in markets like Indonesia where there is a 70:1 ratio between mobile subs and pay TV subs," he said. "India is another good example with the launch of Reliance's Jio [mobile network]." Plus, future rollouts of faster 5G mobile networks provides further opportunity worldwide for video, he said.
At Viacom International Media Networks digital already represents about 20 percent of distribution revenue, with mobile a growing portion of that digital pie. "I can see in the medium term mobile reaching a quarter of our digital distribution revenues," Lynn says.
Importantly, the international mobile deals provide an important test lab for the company as Viacom has also been working on bringing mobile deals to the U.S. where Wall Street has in recent years worried that Viacom's young audiences that have turned to other entertainment options could lead pay TV distributors to drop smaller Viacom networks. (The company is currently engaged in a carriage showdown with AT&T's DirecTV.)
So far, a major U.S. mobile deal has not materialized, but Bakish in February expressed optimism, saying: "We continue to talk to U.S. mobile providers about a range of opportunities."
Adds Lynn: "I've been focused on rolling out mobile services internationally, and we are really getting traction with operators, but Viacom believes that there are mobile opportunities across the world."
Viacom's strategy of licensing its content to mobile operators and making brand-specific apps available for mobile platforms differs from other entertainment giants' focus on launching their own direct-to-consumer streaming services offering up all, or much of, their content. "We do have a differentiated distribution strategy," Lynn tells THR. "We don't have any plans to launch a mass-market global direct-to-consumer service, which means we are freer to strike deeper and more flexible content partnerships with a wide range of distributors, including mobile."
This is where Viacom's recent $340 million acquisition of advertising-supported streaming service Pluto TV, which is available through apps on phones and smart TVs, plays into the mobile opportunity. "Our preferred model is to work business-to-business-to-consumer rather than direct-to-consumer, and Pluto fits into that. It has a young model-friendly audience, and we have plans to roll it out further international after the U.K. and Germany launches and the [upcoming] Latin America in the next 12 months."
Adds Lynn that "Pluto gives us a really strong offering" at a time when many mobile providers around the world are still deciding how to play in the content space, adding to the company's other offerings for the mobile space. "We got young-skewing entertainment brands, and mobile services are targeted at young audiences. We got deep libraries of mobile-friendly content, both long and shortform. And we have an increasing range of different products that will fit different operators' strategies."
Viacom is bullish on the broader benefits of its mobile push. "I see mobile as a way to bring new subscribers into the pay TV ecosystem via a mobile-only product," he says. "This is a game-changing opportunity for us and really important part of the transformation of our business model."

‘Dora the Explorer’ Discovers El Dorado in Paramount and Nickelodeon's First Two 'Dora and the Lost City of Gold' Movie Posters
Explorer is her middle name!
Paramount Players and Nickelodeon Movies today unveiled the first two posters for their upcoming live-action Dora the Explorer movie, Dora and the Lost City of Gold! Additionally, it's also been revealed that Nickelodeon will debut the first Dora and the Lost City of Gold trailer during Kids' Choice Awards 2019 on Saturday, March 23!
Nickelodeon and Paramount's first Dora and the Lost City of Gold movie posters, below, gives fans a first-look at the film's logo, as well as a first look at Dora’s pal monkey Boots and her trusty Backpack! The second poster, this one hailing from the U.K., sees Moner beside some of her cast mates, while offering a better look at CG Boots.
Isabela Moner (100 Things to Do Before High School, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Transformers: The Last Knight), who was last seen in Instant Family and Sicario: Day of the Soldado, stars as a teenage version of the beloved Nickelodeon character. She’s out to save her parents and discover the secret of a lost city of gold in a new adventure. Here’s the full synopsis:
Having spent most of her life exploring the jungle with her parents, nothing could prepare Dora (Isabela Moner) for her most dangerous adventure ever – High School. Always the explorer, Dora quickly finds herself leading Boots (her best friend, a monkey), Diego (Jeffrey Wahlberg), a mysterious jungle inhabitant (Eugenio Derbez), and a rag tag group of teens on a live-action adventure to save her parents (Eva Longoria, Michael Peña) and solve the impossible mystery behind a lost city of gold.
This posters follow the first image of Moner as Dora, which was released last summer when the movie started production in Australia.
Dora and the Lost City of Gold is set to opens in theaters on Aug. 2, 2019.
11-time Emmy and four-time BAFTA nominee director James Bobin (Alice Through the Looking Glass) has assembled a cast of diverse superstars to star in the movie. In addition to Moner, the film will star Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives, Overboard) and Michael Peña, who play the parents of the titular character; Eugenio Derbez (Overboard, Instructions Not Included; How to Be A Latin Lover), who plays Alejandro, a mysterious jungle inhabitant who tries to protect the teenagers from the marauders; Jeffrey Wahlberg (Future World, Ballers, Counterpart, Reefa) in the role of cousin Diego; Nicholas Coombe (Spy Kids: Mission Control, Midnight Sun) as Randy, a fellow high schooler who develops an immediate crush on Dora; Madeleine Madden (Picnic at Hanging Rock, Tidelands) as the school’s snooty class president, Sammy; Academy Award nominee Adriana Barraza (Babel, Amores Perros, Thor, The 33) as Dora’s grandma, Abuelita Valerie; Temuera Morrison (Green Lantern, Moana), who will play the role of Powell; Q’orianka Kilcher (The Alienist), who will play Inca Princess Kawillaka; Pia Miller (Home and Away) as Dora's aunt Mami; Madelyn Miranda, who portrays Young Dora; Benicio del Toro as the voice of Swiper the fox, and Danny Trejo as the voice of Boots the Monkey.
Trejo took to Twitter after the first poster was released from the film to announce he would be playing the character. Trejo wrote "The rumors are true, I finally can tell you I am a monkey...Boots!!! Don’t miss the @DoraMovie trailer this Saturday 3/23, debuting live during the @Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards! #DoraMovie"
Trejo is popular thanks to his frequent collaborations with writer-director Robert Rodriguez. He’s been part of the From Dusk Till Dawn franchise, the Machete films, and the Spy Kids franchise. He was recently in CW’s The Flash, DC Universe’s Young Justice Outsiders, and Disney Channel’s Tangled: The Series. Next, he will be in Rob Zombie’s trilogy ender 3 from Hell, and (eventually) reprise his role as the titular character in Rodriguez’ Machete Kills in Space.
To celebrate the film, Isabela Moner and Eugenio Derbez will be making special guest appearances at Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards 2019 on Saturday, March 23, 2019!
Dora and the Lost City of Gold comes from Paramount Players and Nickelodeon Movies. It’s directed by James Bobin. Tom Wheeler wrote the story, and Nicholas Stoller and Matthew Robinson penned the screenplay. Longtime Bobin associate Kristin Burr (Christopher Robin) is producing, and Julia Pistor (The Spiderwick Chronicles, A Series of Unfortunate Events), Eugenio Derbez, John G. Scotti (The Muppets, Muppets Most Wanted, Alice Through the Looking Glass) are executive producing.

How Nickelodeon Capitalizes on Social Media to Stay on Top of Kids’ Campaigns | Nickelodeon at 40
When Nickelodeon's green slime first oozed its way over talent’s heads 40 years ago on the acquisition Canadian series You Can’t Do That on Television, there was no way of knowing the stuff would transcend series and generations of children — let alone launch a festival. But green goop was just the beginning of the network’s lasting story in the kids space thanks to a robust intellectual property (IP) library, recognizable brand extensions and an innovative marketing strategy that’s changing the conversation about conventional ad venues.
Following research indicating Nick’s current audience is a generation of kids with access to a household average of 12 connected devices and who serve as their own programmers, those execs trained to be multi-literate across multiple platforms including YouTube and Instagram, with a mission to bring their brand to kids. On March 21, Kim Rosenblum, Executive Vice President (EVP) and Chief Creative Officer, Nickelodeon, will receive Variety’s Brand Innovator Award at its Entertainment Marketing Summit presented by Deloitte at Neuehouse in Hollywood.
“It’s important to us to be cross-platform and pitching and catching across social and YouTube and our channels,” Rosenblum told Variety. “It’s not like before, when people used to come to brands. It’s much more of a two-way relationship, where we’re out looking for kids where they are. We’re going to give them the content they want, rather than expecting them to come to us at a date and time that we’ve dictated.”
Part of that strategy involves bringing popular YouTube personalities including Liza Koshy, JoJo Siwa and the titular Ryan of “Ryan ToysReview” to linear on such series as Double Dare, the Kids’ Choice Awards or the upcoming series Ryan’s Mystery Playdate, as well as collaborating with these creators on fresh online content that targets audiences in new ways.
“We do a lot of content on our YouTube channel, which has grown exponentially — a 200% growth in a year,” says Rosenblum. “Combining talent, our IP and YouTube talent to do great mashups and collaboration is what kids want, and we want to be wherever kids are and giving them what they want. That’s the premise of this Nick brand.”
Refreshing existing IP is an integral part of that, according to Charlotte Castillo, the Senior Vice President (SVP) of Global Franchise Planning for Viacom Nickelodeon Consumer Products (VNCP). She points to the reimagined Ninja Turtles property Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a recent example of new content and consumer products designed for a new generation.
“Our job is to extend the life of our properties through multiple touchpoints from content to digital to consumer products and live experiences,” she says. “We wanted to be in more places, reaching more demos, on more platforms to build awareness for the series, and we made smart partnerships to extend our reach. We executed the most aggressive digital sneak peek pre-release strategy in Nickelodeon history, including the global release of the first episode on YouTube before the linear premiere.”
For the upcoming Kids’ Choice Awards, Nickelodeon put that cross-platform engagement into practice by announcing the nominees and host DJ Khaled via a live-stream hosted by Koshy across all of its platforms. Meanwhile, voting for the actual show launched across Twitter, the Nickelodeon website and Instagram, where Nickelodeon created an AR lens for nominees and fans to slime themselves.
Senior Vice President Executive Creative Director Tony Maxwell points to Nickelodeon’s newly launched sticker program Screens Up — a user-sharing initiative involving virtual badges — as another innovation that has increased engagement and brand awareness with new audiences.
“Many of the nominees are taking these badges with their images and pushing them out to their fan bases. It’s creating a whole additional layer of marketing for us,” he says.
To continually reach their demographic, Maxwell and his team strive to think like children. They look outward for creative inspiration through polls and manage an overall calendar with relevant events, including back-to-school and social hashtags that reflect youth sensibilities.
“As opposed to just taking one central idea like in the past and pushing the same creatives across the different platforms, we’re really customizing everything based on where the kids are and what they’re going through at that moment in their lives,” he says.
Further research indicates that 26% of Nickelodeon’s audience is of the Latinx community, and so diversity also factors strongly into that mindset. In early 2018 the network launched the “That’s Me” campaign, a series of PSAs highlighting kids from all cultures that shines a light on individuality. Meanwhile, the network is eyeing upcoming launches with The Loud House spin-off The Casagrandes and a live-action Dora the Explorer theatrical release is coming in August.
Above all, Rosenblum says the key to keeping the Nickelodeon brand alive and relevant is continually marketing the brand itself. Through attitude, tone, visual branding with the network’s iconic orange color and musically with the earworm jingle, that is ultimately what has enabled the network to transcend four decades of youth programming.
“We’re committed to making sure the Nick brand is relevant to today’s kids. It pulls on the heartstrings of previous generations, but most importantly, the brand is alive and well and moving us forward,” she says. “It’s very much about our brand as the longtail. We love all our shows, we love all our talent, but our brand is the driver and we value it very much.”

JoJo Siwa and North West to Film a YouTube Video Together
Hold Onto Your Hair Bows! JoJo Siwa and North West Are Filming a YouTube Video Together
North West's wildest dreams are about to come true!
Just days before Nickelodeon hosts their slime-filled Kids' Choice Awards 2019, one nominee has some big news to share about her next project.
While celebrating her Favorite Social Music Star and Favorite TV Host nomination, JoJo Siwa revealed to E! News that she is going to film a YouTube video with North. And yes, Kim Kardashian may make an appearance in the finished product too.
Originally, JoJo thought they would film at Kim's house. But because North really wants to see JoJo's home, they are switching locations.
As for how close the Nickelodeon star is to North's mom? You may just be surprised. JoJo told E! News at University of Southern California's Galen Center that they text around five times a day. And yes, Kim is super nice.
While she didn't know what to expect from the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star, JoJo admitted Kim is also normal and down to earth.
Pop culture fans may recall seeing North dance on Twitter while attending Kanye West's Sunday Service. In fact, some followers couldn't help but ask about the five-year-old's outfit for the day.
"LOL @ North's bow. She is obsessed with @itsjojosiwa," Kim later shared on Twitter.
JoJo ultimately saw the message and couldn't help but respond. "Omg!! Yesss I love it!" she wrote online. "I wanna send her some special ones!! DM me!"
And just last weekend, Kim revealed on social media that North was able to chat with her idol on the phone.
"North just FaceTimed @ItsJoJoSiwa and her life is made," she explained. "That was the cutest thing ever seeing North soooo excited! Especially when she saw her dog bowbow."
Something tells me North is going to want tickets to JoJo's D.R.E.A.M. The Tour and Nickelodeon SlimeFest. Until then, fans can look forward to the YouTube video and the Kids' Choice Awards, hosted by music mogul DJ Khaled LIVE from Hollywood on March 23rd at 8/7c on Nickelodeon USA and YTV Canada, and soon after on Nickelodeon channels worldwide! Make sure to keep voting for JoJo at kidschoiceawards.com!
