Jeremy Zuckerman Provides Update on Netflix's Live-Action 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Series

Ever since Netflix first announced plans to produce a live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon's beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender series and franchise, further details about the production have been scarce. We know the animated series’ original creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino are directly involved, and we know they’re determined to avoid the pitfalls of M. Night Shyamalan’s movie adaptation. We also know that the cartoon’s head writer Aaron Ehasz isn't directly involved in this version — he’s busy with his own Netflix animated series, The Dragon Prince. However, a new update has come through for its adaptation at last!


Over on Twitter, the team at Discussing Film hit up fans with an update on Netflix's live-action plans for Avatar: The Last Airbender. The series, which is heavily inspired by anime, was optioned for a live-action series last year. Now, composer Jeremy Zuckerman is opening up about the project, and he is rather optimistic.

In his recent interview, below, Zuckerman was asked about his piece in the live-action project. While the musician couldn’t say much, he did admit Avatar: The Last Airbender has a bit to go before he’ll be needed in the studio.

“I can say that I haven’t started yet. I think there is a ways to go. I know Bryan [DiMartino] posted people were hitting up like crazy about casting,” Zuckerman said.

“I’m really excited about. We’re really excited about it. Netflix seems really on-board and supportive. I think they’re really committed to getting it right,” he continued before adding, “It feels nice to have that support.”



So far, Netflix has been cagey about details on the live-action venture, but fans know some important crew members working on the project. The creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will be involved, and they released a joint statement about the show.

"We’re thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. We can’t wait to realize Aang’s world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast,” the duo stressed.

With an eye on authentic casting, fans are hopeful this live-action take will avoid the pitfalls M. Night Shyamalan made all those years ago with his take on the franchise. So, here’s to hoping Aang and the gang get it right when they step into the world of streaming down the line.

Casting for the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender begins later this year, and fans will also be able to have the chance to audition in a open casting call.

For those of you unfamiliar with Avatar: The Last Airbender, the series screened on Nickelodeon between February 2005 and July 2008. Its complex story and diverse stars earned the series’ acclaim.

The series was nominated for—and won—Annie Awards, Genesis Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Peabody Award. Avatar: The Last Airbender follows the adventures of the main protagonist Aang and his friends, who must save the world by defeating Fire Lord Ozai and ending the destructive war with the Fire Nation.

The Last Airbender’s story coupled with its anime-inspired artwork helped the franchise grow a loyal fanbase, and the series has continued to expand with various comics over the years. Recently, it was announced a young adult novel focusing on Avatar Kyoshi would be coming to the canon, leaving fans eager to learn more about the infamous warrior's tenure.

Konietzko and DiMartino also created a follow-up series, The Legend of Korra, that returned to the world of Avatar years after Aang’s death to follow Korra, his successor as Avatar. That series ran between 2012-2014. The Legend of Korra universe will also expanded with a new graphic novel trilogy.

Nickelodeon Italy Acquires Rights to 'The Jungle Bunch' Season Three

Broadcasters for season three of the France Télévisions-commissioned series include Nickelodeon Italy, Cartoon Network France, and WeKids in China


Paris-based distributor PGS Entertainment has secured a raft of presales with international broadcasters for the upcoming third season of CGI-animated series The Jungle Bunch.

Commissioned by France Télévisions, broadcasters across 30 territories have picked up the new season including Nickelodeon Italy (Italia), Cartoon Network France, Fox LatAm (Latin America), TV Azteca in Mexico, WeKids in China, RAI in Italy, RTBF in Belgium, Télé-Quebec in Canada, ETV in South Africa, Dreamia’s Canal Panda in Portugal, TVNZ in New Zealand, ERR in Estonia, LRT in Lithuania and Lattelecom in Latvia.

Toulouse, France-based TAT productions and Master Films will co-produce the third season, while PGS Entertainment will handle all global distribution. A premiere date for the new 52 x 11-minute season, which was greenlit in January 2019, is still to be announced.

The Jungle Bunch, targeted to both kids & their families, features an enchanting and comedic array of animal characters, including Maurice the penguin, who thinks he’s a tiger; and Junior, the tiger fish.

It first debuted as a 1-minute episode in 2012, which quickly led to a TV special & shorts. Since then, The Jungle Bunch has grown into an international success, with 2 seasons airing in over 180 territories, on all continents, including on major networks such as Cartoon Network and Nat Geo kids, SVOD platforms such as Netflix, and leading free-to-air broadcasts such as Rai (Italy), Super RTL (Germany), Clan (Spain), ABC (Australia), TVNZ (New Zealand), TeleQuebec (Fr. Canda), Ouf Tivi (Belgium), VRT (Belgium), NRK (Norway), and many more! Show recently launched in the US on Sprout and Hulu.

The franchise originally launched in 2012 as a 26 x one-and-a-half-minute series, which then expanded to a 52-minute TV movie, and a second 104 x 11-minute season developed in partnership with France Télévisions and Germany’s Super RTL. The latest season will introduce many new characters and environments that were featured in the property’s 2017 theatrical release of the same name, as well as feature the return of favorite characters, new romances and much more!

The Jungle Bunch has won over a dozen awards, including the prestigious Kids Emmy Award for Best Animation (2014), as well as Pulcinella Awards (2012) (2014), and Kidscreen Awards (2013) (2014).

The Walk’s Latest Event Raised More Than $2 Million for Children with Special Needs, Schools and College Scholarships

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif.--The Skechers Foundation distributed checks for its largest-ever donations to children with special needs and education after a record-setting year at its 10th annual Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk, sponsored by Nickelodeon and NBC4 Southern California. Celebrities Brooke Burke and Denise Austin as well as executives from Skechers and the foundations receiving donations were on hand for a check presentation ceremony at the Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach, California on Thursday, March 7.

Among the presentations was nearly $600,000 to the non-profit organization Friendship Foundation to advance its efforts for children with special needs and their families. Additionally, checks totaling more than $1 million were presented to six education foundations. And the Skechers Foundation also continued its annual scholarship program, announcing that college scholarships will be awarded to exceptional high school students nationwide for the third year in a row.

“Since its start, the Walk has raised an incredible $11 million for our kids – and it’s all because of the tens of thousands of walkers, donors and sponsors who have believed in our event as passionately as we believe in our children,” said Michael Greenberg, president of Skechers. “For the past decade, they’ve supported and have rallied for us as we’ve grown into the largest event of our kind in the state. This event’s great success is really thanks to them.”

Nickelodeon's all-new buddy comedy series, Cousins For Life, will premiere on Nickelodeon Scandinavia on Sunday 24th March 2019 at 18:15 on Nickelodeon Denmark (Danmark), Nickelodeon Sweden (Sverige) and Nickelodeon Norway (Norge), immediately following the Danish, Swedish and Norwegian premieres of Kids' Choice Awards 2019! The live-action series follows 12-year-old cousins and best friends Stuart (Dallas Dupree Young) and Ivy (Scarlet Spencer) as they learn to navigate life under one roof with their families in Portland, despite being from very different backgrounds. Although the cousins don’t always see eye-to-eye, they learn that they are better together, and when they team up they are unstoppable.

Following launch, new episodes of Cousins For Life will continue to air weekdays at 18:15 on Nickelodeon Danmark, 18:30 on Nickelodeon Norge, and at 18:35 on Nickelodeon Sverige.

Cousins For Life is locally titled Familie for Livet in Denmark, Søskenbarn for Livet in Norway, and Kusiner för livet in Sweden.

In the premiere episode, "Movin' In" (#101), Ivy and Stuart’s life is disrupted after their dads, Clark (Ishmel Sahid) and Lewis (Ron G.), have a disagreement and Clark ends up moving into their hangout space in the garage. It’s now their missions to resolve their dads’ argument and reclaim their space. The episode also stars Micah Abbey as Ivy’s brother Leaf, who’s always having a good time when he’s with his pet pig, Arthur (Sally Sue).

Viacom International Studios Unveils New Management Structure

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) – Americas has announced a new management structure for its fast-expanding Viacom International Studios (VIS) which will see Federico Cuervo filling the role of Senior Vice President-head of VIS, reporting to Darío Turovelzky, newly named SVP of global contents at VIMN Americas. Turovelzky remains co-chief of VIMN.

Viacom Africa Launches Nickelodeon Channel with Portuguese Soundtrack on MultiChoice in Angola

MultiChoice Angola adds Viacom's Nickelodeon kids channel in Portuguese to DStv.


MultiChoice Angola has added Viacom International Media Networks' (VIMN) Nickelodeon kids channel in Portuguese to DStv, further extending Nickelodeon's presence across the African continent.

Nickelodeon in Portuguese will be available on the DStv Bué and DStv Mega packages in Angola.

MultiChoice Angola as a satellite pay-TV operator, is run as a franchise division in that country by Jembas Assistência Tecnica.

Nickelodeon in Portuguese was added on Monday 4th March 2019 in Angola on DStv channel 573, with Viacom Africa making the announcement of the channel addition on Friday 8th March 2019.

"Extending our brand offering in a more engaging and accessible way across Africa is key to our growth strategy," says Alex Okosi, the Executive Vice President (EVP) and Managing Director (MD) of Viacom International Media Networks Africa (VIMN Africa) & BET International.

"Our much-loved Nickelodeon brand in Portuguese will enable a deeper connection for kids and families in Angola."

Eduardo Continentino, MultiChoice Angola general manager, says "this channel is a direct representation of how DStv is committed to investing in content".

"By customising an offer to better resonate and align with the needs of Angolan children and youth audiences, DStv shows that customers are indeed at the heart of all decisions made. We believe that this channel will add value to our existing channels grid."

Nickelodeon is one of leading children's channels in Africa, especially in the French-speaking part of the continent. According to the French survey firm Kantar TNS, the children's channel is the most watched in sub-Saharan Africa on the Canal + platform. At the end of 2018, Canal + counted around 4.1 million subscribers on the continent.

The launch of the new Nickelodeon in Angola follows Viacom Africa launching Nickelodeon HD in South Africa, in partnership with its major distribution partner, MultiChoice, on Tuesday 5th March 2019.

Paramount Removes 'Are You Afraid of the Dark?' Movie from 2019 Release Schedule

Earlier this year, the movie adaptation of Nickelodeon's beloved '90s series Are You Afraid of the Dark? had its release date moved forward by a week to Friday, October 4, 2019, yet Paramount Pictures has now removed the film from its release schedule entirely, putting the film's release in question.


Over on Twitter, BoxOffice revealed, "ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK?, previously slated for 10/4/19, now has no release date."

Update (2/28): A Paramount spokesperson has told Variety that Paramount is still developing the project, which will come as a relief to fans who are eagerly anticipating the movie!

Update (3/11): Although a new release date for Paramount's upcoming Are You Afraid of the Dark? has yet to be set, Jared Rivet, a staff writer on Nickelodeon's upcoming Are You Afraid of the Dark? revival will be taking part in a panel at WonderCon Anaheim 2019:

Cava (author, screenwriter, producer/writer of Creepypasta: The Motion Picture) explore the directions horror will take over the course of the next decade, from the point of view of authors and filmmakers. Looking at everything from characters, tropes, and plots to CGI capabilities, filming with drones, and the rise of the next great director, this panel will showcase everything you want to know about the next ten years of horror and beyond.

It's unclear exactly what this could mean for the film, with one possibility being that, with an adaptation of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark also landing in theaters this fall and seeking the same audience, the film based on the Nickelodeon series wanted to reevaluate its release strategy. Understandably, the similarities in titles would be enough to perplex casual viewers, with the teen-oriented horrors of each film giving both projects more similarities.

A major difference between the properties, however, is that production on Scary Stories has seemingly been completed, with a teaser debuting earlier this month. Are You Afraid of the Dark?, however, has yet to see any official casting announcements.

Another confusing detail is that Nickelodeon was planning on debuting a miniseries event leading up to the film's release, with fans now wondering if plans for that miniseries will also undergo changes.

The network announced the event via press release, "The beloved anthology series will return this October as a brand-new miniseries and follow new members of the Midnight Society as they gather around a campfire in the woods to share scary stories. The miniseries will coincide with the upcoming Are You Afraid of the Dark? theatrical movie from Paramount Pictures, Paramount Players’, and Nickelodeon Movies, in theaters October 2019."

While details of the film's narrative are still being kept under wraps, writer Gary Dauberman promised the film will honor the spirit of the original series.

“That show is so important to me. I didn’t want to age it down too much because for it’s time, it had some really disturbing episodes and some really dark episodes. Not every story the Midnight Society told ended with happily ever after or a person learning their lesson and it will never happen again," Dauberman admitted to SlashFilm. "I really embraced that side of things and I think it’s been a long time. I think fear is healthy for kids. I don’t think we have to always sand down the edges of things and that’s something I really wanted to do with Are You Afraid of the Dark? I think it is scary and I think kids will be scared watching it at times, and also they’ll laugh at times. I think it’s got a great message. I think it’s got a great heart to it but it is still scary. I think that’s great. I think it’s going to open it up to a wider audience.”

In additional news, it has also been revealed that Paramount Pictures has moved Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Players' upcoming live-action/CG-animated Rugrats movie from Friday, November 13, 2020 until Friday, January 29, 2021. Paramount has instead moved its Untitled Family Event Movie (based on Clifford the Big Red Dog) to the Friday, November 13, 2020 slot.
