NICKELODEON'S "ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A FIFTH GRADER" MAKES THE GRADE, SCORES MORE THAN ONE MILLION TOTAL VIEWERS
Series Premiere Is Monday's Number-One Program with Kids 2-11 and Kids 6-11; Most Co-Viewed Show on Ad-Supported TV for the Day
NEW YORK-June 12, 2019-Nickelodeon's reimagined iconic family game show, Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader, scored for the net, with more than one million total viewers tuning in for its Monday, June 10, (7 p.m. [ET/PT]) debut. Hosted by John Cena, who also serves as executive producer, the series also handily won the day with kids, ranking as the number-one program on cable with Kids 2-11 (2.3/540K, +21% vs prior 4 weeks) and Kids 6-11 (2.3/343K, +10%). Additionally, the broad appeal of the series landed the premiere in the top spot for co-viewing on ad-supported TV for the day, and posted double-digit year-over-year and prior 4 weeks gains with Adults 18-49 (+33%).
Following the original premise, the new Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader series, features kids helping adult contestants put their knowledge to the test with questions taken directly from an elementary school curriculum. Joining Cena, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, is a rotating cast of 12 brainy fifth graders: Amira from Orlando, Fla.; Chloe from Queens, N.Y.; Colin from Dallas; Cooper from Porter Ranch, Calif.; Isabella from St. Cloud, Fla.; Jamir from Atlanta; Mia from New Orleans; Nick from Broomall, Pa.; Patrick from Lehigh Valley, Pa.; Quinne from Los Angeles; Saya from Peachtree City, Ga.; and Tristan from Aurora, Ill. New episodes will continue to air Monday, June 17, through Wednesday, June 19, at 7:00 p.m. (ET/PT), before moving to its regular Monday timeslot on June 24 at 7:00 p.m. (ET/PT).

‘Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?’ Premiere Draws 18-49 Audiences In Nick’s Push For Co-Viewing
Nickelodeon’s revival of Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader, with new host John Cena, got off to an OK start in its Monday night premiere, drawing 1.1 million total viewers.
The viewership total is up double digits over the prior four-week averages with kids and adults in the 7 PM time slot where the network most recently aired repeats of The Loud House, TV’s No. 2 animated kids show. Numbers are up 21% among kids 6-11 and up 34% in 18-49.
In Kids 6-11, 5th Grader scored a 2.3/540,000, on par with last year (-4%), while jumping 33% in adults 18-49 to .4/338,000, an indication of more parents watching the show with their children.
Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader is part of the programming strategy of new Nick president Brian Robbins for a content slate, which focuses on co-viewing among kids and parents. Also falling in that category are new British family game show The Crystal Maze, and All That, Nick’s new sketch-comedy series revival which premieres this Saturday, June 15.
Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? follows the original premise of kids helping adult contestants put their knowledge to the test with questions taken directly from an elementary school curriculum. But the new format puts the rotating cast of a dozen brainy grade-schoolers in the center of the action. Grown-up contestants must revisit the classroom to answer six questions on a variety of subjects from the first through fourth grade before moving on to the final round, where they must race against the clock to answer five questions taken from the fifth grade. Each time the contestants answer questions correctly, their bank increases with a possible winning of $100,000.

John Cena: Nickelodeon Knows Its Audience With 'Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader'
John Cena, the wrestler-turned-actor, explains that the Nickelodeon reboot of "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" prioritizes the fifth grader competitors, rather than the adult contestants, marking a new direction for the beloved game show.
The quiz-based competition originally aired as a special in 2007, and then returned again in 2015, both times with Jeff Foxworthy as host.
Cena, who is both hosting and executive producing the show, explained that his version will feature new elements, including a new set and new ways for the adult players to "cheat."
"Nickelodeon understands their audience because their audience is children and families. And families are going to enjoy this because the classroom looks fun," said Cena. "This should be a place where kids want to sit at those desks. It should be fun."
"It's similar in that it's a game show, and that adults are going to have a very difficult time winning that $100,000 prize because they're going to have to earn it," he said, comparing it to the original series. "It's different in that the kids are our stars."
About Cena's own time in 5th grade, he said, "I was a lot of energy, probably not a lot of education."
"I was a poor student and ended up righting the educational ship around 15 years old," the host explained. "But it took a long time, and I really am giving a thank you to all my elementary school teachers for dealing with me."
