From Tuscaloosa News:
Northport teacher appearing on rebooted 'Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?' Monday
Growing up in Tuscaloosa County, Lindsey Hall remembers how one particular game show was a part of her family’s evening routine.
"Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" involved educators answering questions that a typical fifth-grade student should know, often receiving help from fifth-graders themselves. The show ran on Fox between 2007 and 2011 and briefly in 2015, hosted by comedian Jeff Foxworthy. After the show’s initial run, Hall went on with her life, becoming a third-grade teacher at Flatwoods Elementary School, the same school she attended as a young girl.
One day back in February, Lindsey Hall was on Facebook when she saw an intriguing opportunity: Contestants were wanted for a rebooted version of the game show, this time on Nickelodeon and hosted by professional wrestler John Cena.
Within 30 minutes of submitting an application, Hall received a call from show producers in Los Angeles.
On Monday night, Hall will be the first contestant on the premiere of the revamped show, airing at 6 p.m. on Nickelodeon. In addition to the night being the first time Hall has been on a game show, the flight to Los Angeles for filming was the first time she had ever been on an airplane.
"It was totally surreal," Hall said. "It was everything I expected it to be and so much more."
Mary Jean Sutton, principal at Flatwoods, said she is excited for Hall.
"I have no doubt that she represented the school well," Sutton said.
Hall admitted that her preparation for the show mostly consisted of Googling trivia from past episodes as well as searching online for typical curricula for fifth grade. Coincidentally, Hall will be teaching fifth grade this coming fall.
"The students that they had were absolutely amazing," she said. "Having them on the stage eased my nerves."
Hall said Cena also went out of his way to make her feel comfortable on set.
"He just told me we’re going to have fun, we’re doing it for the kids and to do my best," she said.
When the show airs Monday night, Hall will have her own viewing party with family and friends.
"It was just so exciting to experience every aspect of that," Hall said.
