From Deadline:
Viacom Adds Four Flagship Channels To Pluto TV Streaming Service – NewFronts
Viacom said its flagship networks BET, Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon will be added to the free, ad-supported streaming service Pluto TV, which it acquired in January.
The company made the announcement and unveiled a slate of digital programming during its second annual NewFronts pitch to media buyers at the PlayStation Theater in New York’s Times Square.
“We’re excited to return to the NewFronts after a year of rapid digital acceleration and momentum across the leading social and online video platforms,” Viacom Digital Studios president Kelly Day said in the official release. “Our remarkable growth continues to be driven by an investment in premium original programming and experiences that engage our young, diverse audiences on the platforms they love most, presenting an unprecedented opportunity for our advertising partners to join the conversation.”
Viacom bought Pluto for $340 million, signaling a strategy similar to NBCUniversal’s, emphasizing advertising and free streaming rather than the subscription blueprints drawn up by Disney and WarnerMedia. This year and next will be milestones in terms oof new streaming launches, with Apple also coming to market with Apple TV+ this fall, and a cluster of traditional media and tech players focused on closing the gap with Netflix.large horizontal
Pluto TV has more than 15 million monthly active users, Viacom said. The company’s channels will go live on May 1, with content from Viacom’s library appearing on three categories of branded channels. The first is group is Co-Branded Flagship Channels, which are described as “curated” versions of Viacom’s existing networks; Signature Channels, with the most “celebrated and diversified” programming from each brand; and Pop-Up Channels, which deliver series in marathon-style airings. The Pop-Ups will start with MTV’s The Hills, which will re-air ahead of reboot The Hills: New Beginnings, which debuts on June 24.
“We are thrilled to expand the Pluto TV offering with the addition of Viacom’s world-class channel brands and iconic programming. This is a major step forward in our mission of entertaining the planet,” Pluto co-founder and CEO Tom Ryan said.
Programming from Viacom Digital Studios will circulate across Facebook, Snap, Twitter and YouTube for Viacom’s more than 880 million fans, which Viacom calls the largest social footprint among entertainment companies. With the addition of Pluto TV, Viacom predicts its digital video impressions will grow to 5 billion per month by 2020.
VidCon, another recent Viacom acquisition, will mark the 10th anniversary of its flagship conference in Anaheim, CA that is geared to video creators for YouTube and other platforms. About 75,000 attendees are expected at the conference in July, with a new element this year, The Direct Brand Summit.
“We have made incredible strides over the past year due to our acquisitions and expansion to grow our digital reach significantly to the direct benefit of our advertising partners.” Viacom Head of Ad Solutions Sean Moran said. “With more touch points than ever before, we look forward to leveraging the full scale and power of Viacom to help our clients create real, authentic connections with our highly coveted and hard-to-reach young audiences wherever they are.”

From Forbes:
Viacom Dives Into The Streaming Wars, Bring Comedy Central, Nickelodeon Shows To PlutoTV
At a time when Disney has outlined an ambitious plan to use its most valuable entertainment brands to launch its forthcoming Disney+ service, Viacom is bringing its stars to its newly acquired free streaming offering, PlutoTV.
Viacom, though, is striking a more measured approach to streaming, one that preserves its current season’s shows for paying cable and satellite television subscribers.
Ahead of its presentation Monday to advertisers, Viacom said it would launch six channels on PlutoTV that will carry the brands of its flagship cable networks: Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon and BET.
The shows featured on the free, ad-supported streaming service are among the popular titles in the Viacom vault that the media company deliberately kept off other streaming services with the goal of launching something of its own.
“We felt like it’s a great place for us to really be able to get this enormous library of brands and (intellectual property) that we have in front of consumers who maybe are not traditional TV watchers,” said Kelly Day, president of Viacom Digital Studios.
For example, the forthcoming Comedy Central Pluto TV will feature the best of its late night, sketch and animation, such as special features from The Daily Show With Trevor Noah. A Nick Jr. Pluto TV will carry classic episodes of such preschool shows as Blues Clues and Dora the Explorer, while Nick Pluto TV will carry rewinds of shows including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Fairly Odd Parents and iCarly.

From CNET:
Viacom to launch free streaming versions of its channels on Pluto TV
But these reformatted Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon networks won't mirror the real thing you get with a pay-TV subscription.
Viacom is going to make its cable channels stream free... sort of.
The company -- which runs cable networks BET, Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon -- will debut free streaming channels based on those networks Wednesday on PlutoTV, the ad-supported free steaming app that Viacom bought earlier this year for $340 million. The announcement Monday was made in advance of the company's NewFront, an annual presentation to digital advertisers.
But the channels won't be streaming versions of the networks that people get with a pricey cable subscription. Viacom described them in three different categories: Flagship Channels that are "curated versions" of the networks, Signature Channels with top programming from each brand, and Pop-Up Channels that binge-deliver a show marathon-style.
"We are thrilled to expand the Pluto TV offering with the addition of Viacom's world-class channel
brands and iconic programming. This is a major step forward in our mission of entertaining the planet,"
said Tom Ryan, CEO and co-founder of Pluto TV.
Its first pop-up channels will set up marathons of MTV's The Hills ahead of the series' reboot. The flagship channels will be named things like BET Pluto TV, which will stream urban movies, and Comedy Central Pluto TV, which will queue up original comedy series, late night, sketch, animation and specials from the likes of The Daily Show.

From TechCrunch:
Viacom is launching Pluto TV channels for Comedy Central, MTV and more
Just a few months after acquiring video streaming service Pluto TV, Viacom says it will be bringing its major networks to the ad-supported streaming service, with a whole lineup of new channels launching on May 1.
The company is making this announcement in advance of its NewFronts presentation for advertisers later this afternoon. Viacom Digital Studios President Kelly Day told me the presentation will outline the company’s broader digital strategy, which includes not just the acquisition of Pluto TV but also of the VidCon and SnowGlobe events businesses.
On the Pluto TV side, there will be “flagship channels,” which the company describes as “specially curated versions” of Viacom’s networks — BET Pluto TV, Comedy Central Pluto TV, MTV Pluto TV, Nick Pluto TV, Nick Jr. Pluto TV and Spike Pluto TV. Other channels will have a more specific theme, like CMT Westerns, Comedy Central Stand-up, MTV Dating, MTV Guy Code, MTV Teen, Paramount Movie Channel and Spike Outdoors.
And there will also be “pop-up channels,” which allow viewers to binge on a specific show, starting with “The Hills.”
While Viacom executives have said they plan to add paid subscriptions to Pluto TV, Day said the company is taking “a bit of a contrarian approach” by not just creating its own subscription service to compete with Netflix.
“We believe that free, ad-supported video is still an enormous opportunity,” she said.
Other content announcements include the fact that AwesomenessTV is working on “How to Survive: A Break-Up,” a scripted series for its YouTube channel starring popular YouTube star Eva Gutowski. And there will be linear TV announcements that include online elements, like “Black Coffee,” a morning show from BET that will recap major conversations from Black Twitter, and an untitled Comedy Central late night show hosted by David Spade, which will also publish content to YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
Since launching Viacom Digital Studios to spearhead its online video activity just over a year ago, the company says its social video views and watch time have increased by 83 percent and 119 percent, respectively, and that it’s now receiving an global average of 4 billion views each month, adding up to more than 6 billion minutes watched.
“I think that there is tremendous value for our brands in being on platforms where we know audiences are spending a lot of time,” Day said. “We are media brands — and so, if you look at brands like Nickelodeon or MTV, if you’re only focused on the linear audience, you’re missing a huge share of the population and where they’re spending time.”

From The Hollywood Reporter:
Can Viacom Leverage Pluto TV Into a Major Streaming Video Business?
Facing a shrinking cable TV landscape and unable to compete with SVOD behemoths, CEO Bob Bakish charts a different course than Netflix, Disney and other deep-pocketed rivals.
Driving through Los Angeles recently, it was hard to miss them. "Pluto TV," read the billboards. "It's free TV." You could be forgiven for asking, what, exactly, does that mean? But if Bob Bakish has his way, you won't be wondering much longer.
The Viacom CEO paid $340 million for the streaming video upstart in January and has made it central to his plan to revive Viacom's floundering network of brands. As cable subscribers bail and are unlikely to return, Bakish — like his peers at Disney, WarnerMedia and NBCUniversal — has realized that he must chart a digital future for iconic, if now slightly moth-eaten properties like MTV, BET and Nickelodeon.
With Pluto TV, an ad-supported platform that has attracted 16 million monthly users by mimicking the experience of channel surfing for cord-cutters, Viacom hopes to extract new dollars from old episodes of The Hills and All That. It's just one element of a prolonged turnaround strategy that includes a growing ad-targeting platform, plans for more digital video production and new infrastructure to exploit its library for third-party buyers.
Asked about other possible acquisitions, Bakish signals that he's placing his streaming bet on Pluto TV. "It's all about adding scale to key parts of the business such that we can accelerate our growth," he says. "We're very disciplined in that regard."
Bakish is already late to the streaming game. Sure, acquiring Pluto TV gives him a few months' head start on new entrants from Disney, WarnerMedia and Apple, but Netflix dominates the over-the-top landscape with its nearly 149 million global subscribers and ballooning original programming budget. Though Viacom plans to set itself apart with a focus on the significantly less crowded ad-supported streaming space, it'll still have to fight to capture even a sliver of viewers' time at a moment when there's a near-constant font of new shows and games and apps and podcasts competing for their attention.
And while Viacom's fortunes have improved under Bakish — operating income is up at film studio Paramount, for example, following the box office success of A Quiet Place and the latest installment of Mission: Impossible — the company is still $9 billion in debt and remains significantly smaller and less cash rich than nearly all of the tech behemoths and entertainment conglomerates it's up against.
An added distraction is the renewed likelihood that Viacom will merge with CBS Corp., which one high-ranking executive says is all but inevitable now that the latter's interim CEO, Joseph Ianniello, has extended his contract. Longtime Viacom loyalists are working to ensure Bakish, who has remained silent on the prospect of a merger, is seen by the board and majority owner Shari Redstone as the future of the combined company because, per the executive, "She's a Redstone and any bright object could catch her eye."
Despite the challenges, Naveen Sarma, an analyst at S&P Global Ratings, says that Viacom "has been more aggressive in the last couple of years building out digital capabilities. There's an opportunity for them to do really well here."
When Bakish took the reins in late 2016, it was just emerging from a drama-fueled battle as Redstone wrested control away from ex-CEO Philippe Dauman. Morale was low. The business, which sat at the vanguard of pop culture during cable's peak, was struggling to adapt to a changing landscape in which its portfolio of niche networks no longer wielded the same influence with distributors. Paramount, too, was losing hundreds of millions annually, having failed to develop or acquire major franchises as they came to dominate box office.
Another executive might have looked to make a quick buck by striking lucrative licensing deals with the streamers for shows like The Daily Show or SpongeBob SquarePants. But Bakish chose to hold on to those rights, inking only select pacts for older programming. The implication was that he was saving these shows for an eventual Viacom stand-alone service. And while he has launched targeted subscription products Nick Hits and Comedy Central Now (with more expected) and released a broader service called Paramount+ in parts of Europe and South America, he settled on an ad-supported strategy.
"We saw that there's a lot of investment on the SVOD space — Netflix, Disney+, AT&T's product — and at the same time people were not focused on this free space," explains Bakish, "and it is very substantial in terms of broadband-only homes and fits very well with mobile."
Enter Pluto TV, which Viacom bought after exploring several possible ad-supported video acquisitions. The 6-year-old company co-founded by CEO Tom Ryan launched as a repository for shortform web videos, offering cord-cutters a TV-like setup with channels that play videos as though they're airing live. Over time, it has added programming from CNN, Fox Sports and Sony. Now Viacom has infused it with 14 new channels that carry such shows as Blue's Clues, 16 & Pregnant and Duck Dynasty. While current Viacom programming like new seasons of Jersey Shore Family Vacation and RuPaul's Drag Race will remain exclusive to its television networks, Pluto is taking full advantage of the company's back catalog. (Viacom does not break out Pluto TV revenue but said its Advanced Marketing Solutions business grew 76 percent due in part to the acquisition.)
Although much smaller than its subscription video rivals and not attracting customers with original programming, Pluto TV is one of the more established free platforms, which could give it a leg up as new ad-supported entrants from the likes of NBCUniversal come online. "If they can get enough content on this platform, people will start viewing it as, 'I need to go to this platform,' " notes Sarma. James Gross of Barrington Research Associates writes that Pluto TV "provides potential access to a very vital young demographic."
Before acquiring Pluto TV, Bakish had been making smaller bets on digital. He started by tapping Discovery veteran Kelly Day to run a new division, Viacom Digital Studios, focused on bringing the cable brands to social video platforms including YouTube and Snapchat. Along the way, Day scooped up events business VidCon and her former employer AwesomenessTV for a bargain price of less than $100 million. (Its former CEO, Brian Robbins, was put in charge of Nickelodeon two months later.)
Those businesses support Bakish's plan — inspired by Paramount Television selling shows like 13 Reasons Why to Netflix — to turn Viacom into not just a network owner but also a producer of programming that it sells to others (which he anticipates will grow to a $1 billion enterprise by 2020). Part of this strategy was born out of necessity. Unlike Disney, Viacom doesn't have the kind of IP that makes its networks a must-have, so it makes sense to sell to other platforms where properties can generate a bigger audience. (Similar forces led storied Paramount Pictures to ink a once unthinkable deal to supply Netflix with movies last year.)
In success, this gambit looks like the Awesomeness-produced To All the Boys I've Loved Before and PEN15, which drew buzz on Netflix and Hulu, respectively. Viacom now operates Comedy Central Productions, which has inked deals with the producers behind such shows as Broad City and Inside Amy Schumer (an ability to sell widely is more appealing to in-demand talent). MTV Studios recently tapped HBO documentary guru Sheila Nevins to launch a news and music docs group and also made the counterintuitive move to sell a Real World reboot to Facebook, a large but still nascent video platform that could use the boost of the well-known franchise. "It felt like a no-brainer for us," says Facebook development and programming head Mina Lefevre, a former MTV programming executive herself. "They were very open and wanted to reinvent the format, shake it up."
The clearest example yet of what Bakish hopes Viacom will look like in the future was on display April 29 when it held its second NewFronts pitch to advertisers. YouTubers Eva Gutowski and Brent Rivera touted digital-first projects on the same stage as Comedy Central star David Spade. Day boasted that Viacom "brings together premium television creative with digital production expertise and delivers to audiences at scale, in a social environment that we control."
Still, three years into Bakish's tenure, investors aren't convinced that his turnaround plan will work and have sent the stock down 22 percent. The solution may be to merge with CBS, a deal that could give both companies the scale they need to compete. Not to mention, broadcast is the original free TV.
