Parques Reunidos Opens 'Nickelodeon Adventure' Theme Park in intu Xanadú in Spain

Leisure park operator Parques Reunidos today, Monday 17th December 2018, opened Nickelodeon Adventure Madrid, a brand-new 6,000 square metre Nickelodeon-branded Family Entertainment Center, at the intu Xanadú shopping and leisure center in Arroyomolinos, Spain!


The park includes different spaces themed after some of Nickelodeon's most beloved characters, thus offering a completely immersive experience. Among all these interactive games, visitors are able to take part in jellyfish races, play an organ made of corals and obtain their sailing license at SpongeBob's Boating School Blast! in the SpongeBob SquarePants zone, and slide down the famous Lookout Tower in the PAW Patrol area. Other fun areas in the Nickelodeon Adventure Madrid include special Dora the Explorer and The Fairly OddParents zones, as well as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles adventure course with routes through tunnels and over climbing walls, and a Rugrats zone for toddlers. Classic Nickelodeon fans can also find a Stimpy statue inspired by the lovable cat from The Ren & Stimpy Show.

The center also includes a birthday room themed after popular Nickelodeon characters, an interactive area, a 4D cinema, and educational areas for school groups. In addition, some of the most popular Nickelodeon characters will be present at Nickelodeon Adventure Madrid so that all children that visit the center can take home a picture as a souvenir to remind them of their super fun family day.


Finally, Nickelodeon Adventure visitors will have a chance to take a break and a have a snack at Slime Café, while also wrapping up their experience at the Nickelodeon Store, where all intu Xanadú customers will be able to purchase officially licensed Nickelodeon merchandise.

Calistoga grandma starts 'Sticky' business

Contrary to what parents have been telling their children for eons, Linda York wants children to start playing with their food.

Their fruits and vegetables, anyway.

A former documentary filmmaker from San Diego, York lives in Calistoga and has two granddaughters who live in St. Helena.

She’s also the creator and CEO of a new product called StickyLickits, edible cartoon stickers that entice children to eat fruits and vegetables.

They feature some of Nickelodeon’s most popular animated characters including SpongeBob SquarePants and PAW Patrol, two of the most popular shows on the network.

“StickyLickits encourage kids to have fun with fruit and veggies, which is a way of creating a healthy, new eating habit,” York said.

The colorful characters adhere to any kind of fruit or vegetable. They taste a little like vanilla, and dissolve quickly in the mouth, as this writer experienced.

While the cartoons are attractive to kids, parents like the idea that they are sugar-free, something York worked rigorously to ensure. And instead of animal gelatin, the colors are derived from real food like beets and carrots, not from food coloring.

As a documentary filmmaker, years ago York produced an exercise video for the National Institute of Health’s largest study in the country on childhood obesity. She has also done research on childhood health and eating habits and found, “The number one concern parents have for their children is safety. Number two is nutrition,” she said.

York also cites a study done at the University of Bari Adio Moro in Italy, that found that 5 and 6 year olds choose healthy foods like kiwis, carrots and tomatoes over their usual name-brand snacks if the healthy items had a sticker featuring their favorite cartoon character.

While York says she knows people her age who are talking about retirement, here she is starting a new business. She was in the entertainment business for 30 years with a production company called Lipstick in Los Angeles. The idea for the stickers emerged when she was making infomercials and it went nowhere in that particular incarnation. But the idea stuck with York, so to speak.

“I helped develop products and decided I wanted to do that for myself. This was something I believed in,” and there is no other product like this out there on the market, she said.

To get the stickers into the hands of children, getting the A-team of cartoon characters for the stickers was crucial.

“I have witnessed complete meltdowns from children who can’t get products related to Paw Patrol,” York said.

York also plans to come out with more stickers with a Mr. Potato Head concept and animal faces, which have more appeal to girls.

York performed test-marketing on her own granddaughters and at children’s birthday parties.

The most frequent question she gets from parents is whether the edible stickers will encourage kids to eat regular stickers, but she hasn’t had any such reports. Once they’ve tried to eat a regular sticker that novelty will be over.

“There isn’t a child who hasn’t tried to eat a regular sticker. It doesn’t taste good,” she said.

York has spent the last year investing in licenses, logo, a website, and six weeks ago launched into distribution and sales.

The stickers can be found at Cal Mart and Sunshine Foods in St. Helena in the produce sections and York also hopes to get the stickers where the kids are, like schools, and Boys & Girls Clubs.

“My goal is to have it in markets and charge for it, but also get it to the populations that need it the most,” she said.

Viacom Russia to Launch Nicktoons Russia on MTS in December 2018

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Россия will strengthen its portfolio with the launch of a localised Nicktoons channel in Russia in December 2018!


Available exclusively on leading Russian telecommunications operator and digital service provider MTS, Nicktoons Россия will be tailored specifically for boys and girls aged 6-to-10 years, and will air over 600 hours of family-friendly programming - including 200 new episodes - of hit shows from Nickelodeon's global content pipeline annually. Shows will include: SpongeBob SquarePants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Penguins of Madagascar, Hey Arnold!, Welcome to the Wayne, Kung Fu Panda, Avatar: The Last Airbender (The Legend of Aang), Legend of Korra, Bunsen Is a Beast, Mysticons, Harvey Beaks, and Fairly OddParents.

Nicktoons Россия will be available to subscribers of all of MTS' television services: Home, Satellite and Mobile TV, and will air 24 hours a day, seven days a week.


The news follows MTS adding Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. to its DTH offering in August 2018.

Viacom currently has three market-leading children's channels in Russia: Nickelodeon Россия, and Nick Jr. Россия and Nickelodeon HD, which have the highest total share of TV viewing among children aged between 4 to 17 years old in Russia. Nicktoons is a new TV channel for the Russian market, but viewers have already fallen in love with the channel other countries, where it was launched earlier. For example, in the UK, compared to last year, the viewing time of Nicktoons UK increased by 11%, amounting to 1 hour per day. Over the same period in Sweden, the share of Nicktoons Sverige increased by 14%, and in Poland, Nicktoons Polska has seen its viewership increase by 26% since the channel launched in February 2018.

Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and Paramount Comedy Win Big in Russia's 'Big Digit 2019' Awards

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Россия has announced the very exciting news in the following press release that Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and Paramount Comedy each won the viewer vote in their respective category's in the prestigious "Big Digit 2019" awards, which recognises the best in multi-channel digital television in Russia!


Between Saturday 1st and Monday 17th December 2018, "Большая цифра 2019", the tenth edition of the "Big Digit" awards, invited Russian TV viewers to vote for their favourite television channels online at www.bigdigit.ru. This year, more than 90,000 votes were cast by television fans!

Nickelodeon was voted "Детский телеканал 6+" ("The Best Children's TV Channel 6+") by the audience for the ninth year, receiving 3,061 votes (representing 43.1% of the vote in that category). In 2018, Nickelodeon Россия celebrated its landmark 20th anniversary on-air, and introduced viewers to the network's new ambassador: musician and businessman, and the father of four children, Sergey Zhukov (Сергей Жуков). The star chose to represent Nickelodeon as it airs programming that not only entertains viewers, but also educates them. Sergey's opinion is confirmed by Nickelodeon's ratings: Nick has the highest ratings among children's television channels in terms of viewing share and audience coverage of children aged 4-17. The channel regularly hosts pro-social projects, among the most notable initiatives in 2018 is the True Friends campaign, in which Nickelodeon reminded children and adults that there are no barriers to true friendship.

Nick Jr., Nickelodeon's top-performing preschool entertainment channel, was named "Детский телеканал 0+" ("The Best Children's TV Channel 0+"), receiving 2,421 votes (representing 46,2% of the vote) for the second year in a row, maintaining the channel's 100% success rate in winning the award, which was introduced last year for "Big Digit 2018". Nick Jr. entertains the youngest TV viewers with a unique combination of educational and entertaining content, and this year maintained a high rate of first run content: its viewers saw almost 150 hours of new episodes of animated shows for preschoolers, including Top Wing, Sunny Day and Frankie and Frank. The channel also launched the "Nick Jr. Friends Club” for parents of preschool aged children. Paramount Comedy, the Russian version of Comedy Central, was named "Развлекательный телеканал" (Best Entertainment TV Channel),
Paramount Central's fifth Big Digit award! The news comes as Paramount Comedy was the leading channel among comedy channels on pay-tv in terms of audience share and average viewing time by an audience aged 18-44. During the year, the channel treated viewers to new episodes of its main comedy hits, including season 22 of South Park and the 12th and final season of The Big Bang Theory. New shows included the long-awaited Young Sheldon, a spin-off from The Big Bang Theory telling the story of Sheldon's childhood. Paramount Comedy also treated, for the sixth time, to airings of popular shows in open-air cinemas in major Russian cities, in which over five thousand people attended the screenings.

Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and Paramount Comedy will receive their awards at a prestigious "Большая цифра 2019" awards ceremony on Thursday 31st January 2019.

Nickelodeon Brazil to Air 'Dancing Brasil Júnior' Special on Sunday 23rd December 2018

Nickelodeon Brazil (Brasil) will air Dancing Brasil Júnior, a year-end special of the hit dancing competition series Dancing Brasil, featuring celebrity children paired with professional junior ballroom dancers, on Sunday 23rd December 2018 at 19h30!


In Dancing Brasil Júnior, celebrity judges Jaime Arôxa, Fernanda Chamma and Paulo Goulart Filho will evaluate the performances of 10 young celebrities: Kaik Pereira (actor), Leonardo Oliveira (actor), Lorena Tucci (actor), Luiz Eduardo Toledo (actor), Maria Clara de Rosis (singer), Maria Viel Faro (Rodrigo Faro's daughter), Matheus Ueta (actor), Nathalia Costa (actor), Serginho Rufino (JP Rufino's brother), and MC Soffia (singer), who are vying to win a family holiday to Disney World in the U.S.


Hosted by Xuxa and Jean Paulo Campos, the ninety-minute TV special is a Brazilian adaptation of the popular U.S. celebrity dance competition Dancing with the Stars: Juniors (produced by BBC Studios), a spin-off of the hit competition series Dancing with the Stars (produced by BBC Worldwide Productions and Endemol Shine North America), which is the U.S. version of the hit UK dancing competition series Strictly Come Dancing (produced by BBC Studios).

How Famous Comedians Inspired Stephen Hillenburg to Create 'SpongeBob SquarePants'

How the former marine biologist drew upon the likes of Jerry Lewis and Pee-Wee Herman to create the character who lives in a pineapple under the sea.

Are you ready, kids? When first shaping SpongeBob SquarePants' title character's personality, creator Stephen Hillenburg soaked up the works of some pop culture icons. "I think it's amusing to watch a naive, well-meaning character kind of undo more cynical characters — kind of like watching Laurel and Hardy or Charlie Chaplin," Hillenburg told the Washington Post in 2001. "I think that's why kids like the show — maybe even why adults like the show, adults who wish they were still kids."

The animated series Hillenburg, who died in November 2018 at age 57 following an ALS battle, debuted in May 1999 and has since become Nickelodeon's highest-rated and, with more than 200 episodes, one of its longest-running series as well. But what exactly went into crafting Bikini Bottom's resident affable, Krabby Patty-flipping sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea?

SpongeBob was based on other famous comedians

When working on his pitch for SpongeBob with Hillenburg in 1996, creative director Derek Drymon recalls - with his former co-worker from another Nickelodeon class (Rocko's Modern Life) wanting to develop a character "who had a very young, boyish attitude." Their research, added Drymon, involved sitting on Hillenburg's bed watching videos of Pee-Wee-Herman, Buster Keaton, Stan Laurel, and Jerry Lewis, whose 1960 comedy The Bellboy was particularly inspiring.

"Steve talked all through it, pointing out things he liked about the character Jerry was playing," Drymon shared with Biography. "The scene that was most SpongeBob in hindsight was the one where Jerry’s boss gives him the job of putting out hundreds of folding chairs in a giant auditorium. It looks like it will take hours. The boss steps out for a minute, and when he walks back in, Jerry had magically filled the place with chairs."

Also on their watchlist: Towed in a Hole, a 1932 short "where [Laurel] is annoying [Hardy] and gets put in a little room as a punishment," continued Drymon. "Steve loved how Stan entertained himself by drawing on the wall and playing tic-tac-toe all alone — he was like a kid being put in the corner. Steve really wanted to capture that innocent, kid-like humor."

Hillenburg originally named the character "SpongeBoy"

Before they got to that point, however, Hillenburg — a trained marine biologist — first had to dream up the series' "somewhat nerdy, squeaky clean oddball" protagonist. While teaching marine biology at the Orange County Marine Institute in 1989, the animator created a comic book called The Intertidal Zone for the education center. His illustrated work featured a character named Bob, who was, yes, a talking (albeit amorphous-shaped) sponge.

As a marine science teacher and self-described "ocean freak," Hillenburg has said he first drew natural sponges for the series, but after sketching a square household sponge, "it looked so funny" that he knew his star had been born. He first named his "absorbent and yellow and porous" creation "SpongeBoy," but due to copyright issues with a mop company, he swapped a letter and settled on SpongeBob. He reportedly deemed it important to keep "sponge" in the moniker, out of fear that kids may mistake SpongeBob for a block of cheese.

He did, however, see some correlations between SpongeBob and a natural sponge. "I think the realest connection is that sponges are odd and we think of them as odd," Hillenburg added to the Washington Post. "I think the connection to SpongeBob is that sponges are the most elastic, changing, plastic creatures... and I wanted him to be able to do things that were really magical."

Hillenburg continued: "He has these really creative moments when he can re-form himself. But most sponges in the ocean are sedentary: They attach themselves to a rock and sit and filter-feed the rest of their lives, and reproduce, and that's about it. Not that they are not interesting, but they are not that kinetic. They are not mobile. They don't cook Krabbie Patties!"

In the end, however, the cartoon's for-all-ages comedy interwoven with positive lessons is the bedrock of SpongeBob SquarePants' enduring legacy. As Hillenburg, who drew upon personal experiences as a child for storylines, himself summed up: "First of all, we want the show to be really funny. But I think in the end the message is: Treat people the way you expect to be treated."
