Little Q-C dancer has big dreams: 'I like making people happy when I dance'

CARBON CLIFF — Tatum Roselle and his parents have crisscrossed the country the past year and a half — but they haven’t been on vacations. Instead, the 12-year-old Colona Middle School student has been working hard to make his dancing dreams come true.
Tatum has been dancing since he was 5, mainly in hip-hop style. He will show off his skills nationwide Friday, Nov. 9, when he will appear as a contestant on Nickelodeon’s “Lip Sync Battle Shorties,” airing on TV at 6 p.m. He performed recently at a Quad-Cities Lip Sync Battle Shorties event at Rock Island’s Establishment Theatre.
“Tatum is a versatile performer with a huge personality,” said Julie Medeiros, the dance department director for Go 2 Talent Agency, based in Burbank, Calif., which represents the 12-year-old. “When you watch him perform, you can’t take your eyes off of him.”
Tatum’s performance won him the Agency Award at a “Monsters of Hip-Hop” convention in April 2017 in Orlando, Fla., which earned him a meeting with the L.A.-area agency that summer, Medeiros noted.
“We had a conversation with Tatum and his family, and from there, mutually decided he would be a great fit for our GTA family,” she said.
“Tatum put together a video submission for the show, and they loved what they saw,” she said by email. “You need to be strong enough to capture a live audience, and he has what it takes.”

Tatum’s appearance on Nickelodeon’s “Lip Sync Battle Shorties” was filmed over four days in July at Warner Bros. Studios in Los Angeles. He is one of three contestants ages 10 to 12 performing with backup dancers in the episode.
Tatum lip-synced to JoJo Siwa’s “High Top Shoes.” Siwa, who appeared on the “Dance Moms” show, is a 15-year-old native of Omaha, Neb.
“I love shoes,” Tatum said last week at his grandma’s house, noting he loves to wear Jordan high-tops. For the show, he couldn’t wear Jordans or any shoes with logos, but he sported a silver pair that lit up on the bottom.
He didn’t win his episode of the show, but is having a viewing party at his house Friday.
Tatum said his favorite part of the experience was performing and getting to be on TV. He said he wasn’t nervous. “I like making people happy when I dance, showing my personality, getting noticed by other people in the industry,” he said.
‘ALWAYS LOVED TO DANCE’
Tatum has taken weekly dance classes with the Davenport-based hip-hop studio RE-FL3X, run by Juan Valtierra of East Moline, since he was 5.
“He always just loved to dance,” Tatum’s mom, Jayne Roselle, said. “Like when he was 2 and 3, we’d go places, and he’d always just dance.”
“He’s been a loyal student of ours. There are some who stand out, and he stood out because of his outgoing personality,” Valtierra said. “Tatum is very energetic; he makes people smile.”
For several years, Tatum has performed with RE-FL3X as part of the Pete the Purple Bull anti-bullying program at area churches, schools and community events
That’s important to him, he said, because “I don’t like bullies.”
Tatum heard about the national “ImmaBeast” hip-hop dance company on Instagram, where he follows a lot of dance people. His own account (@taterose32) — where he posts photos and videos — has 2,010 followers.
He first auditioned in Chicago in June 2017 for ImmaBeast to get a scholarship to go to L.A. that July. Tatum was among about 100 who tried out in Chicago, and five were picked.
“He was lucky; they only gave two full scholarships to travel to L.A., and the rest were adults,” his mom said. “He was the only kid to get a full scholarship.”
“I’m going around totally overwhelmed, and he’s like, ‘I’m fine. What are you nervous for?’ He’s always cool and collected,” she said.
“I didn’t think I was going to get it because there were a lot of older people that had a lot more experience than me,” Tatum said. “I gave it my best, and that’s all you can do.”
He was in Los Angeles for two weeks in a row, since he had won a scholarship for “Monsters of Hip Hop.”
“He keeps us busy,” his mom said. “This year alone, we’ve been to California three times, New York, Dallas, Kansas City.”
One agency they met with in L.A. asked him to move there immediately.
“We said, ‘He’s 11; we’re not at a point we’re going to move,’ ” his mom said. “The other one he actually signed with said they’d work with us while he’s here, and that’s how he got with Nickelodeon, through the agent.”
“A lot of those kids he auditioned with, they live out there and audition,” Tatum’s dad, Darren, said. “They’re home-schooled. They dance seven days a week. He only dances one or two days a week; still plays football, plays baseball. I want him to be a kid, too.”
Tatum plays quarterback for his school team, and he said participating in sports helps his dancing, especially his hand-eye coordination and muscle control.
Tatum said he’d like to be an actor when he grows up. “That has a little more personality, and personality is pretty much how I carry my dance off. I’d like to dance professionally,” he said.
He’s been in a couple of local TV commercials, which were booked through the Rock Island-based SK Models and filmed in 2016-17. One of those gigs earned him $300, which he used to buy Christmas presents for his family.
Friends have said they’re glad he hasn’t changed with his newfound stardom.
“He’s very down to earth, outgoing, very compassionate,” his mom said.
He hopes the Nickelodeon show leads to more opportunities, more auditions, and more fame.
During the whirlwind of his performances, Tatum also got to dance before two Chicago Bulls games at the United Center in 2017 and this year with Essence W. Dance, based in Davenport.
“It was fun,” Tatum said. “You got to be on the floor Michael Jordan was on,” his dad added with pride.

Siwa helped kick off Nickelodeon’s first U.S. SlimeFest event in Chicago earlier this year, a multi-day, sold out music festival for kids and families, where she performed in front of over 24,000 fans. She also performed at Nickelodeon’s second SlimeFest UK.
Nickelodeon superstar JoJo Siwa is a YouTube personality, singer, dancer, entrepreneur, social media influencer, New York Times bestselling author and star on Nickelodeon’s Lip Sync Battle Shorties. Siwa connects with her fans through many channels: via social media, where she currently has over 7.4 million followers on Instagram, over 17.1 million followers on TikTok (formerly Musical.ly), over 389,000 Twitter followers, almost 500,000 likes on Facebook, and on YouTube, over 8.1 million subscribers with over 1.7 billion views; through her SIWANATORZ club, which stands against negativity and bullying; through her global reach of consumer products including her signature bows, accessories, apparel, arts and crafts, cosmetics, home goods and party supplies; and with her hugely popular singles, “Boomerang,” which has been viewed almost 608 million times and is certified platinum, “Kid in a Candy Store,” “Hold The Drama,” and “High Top Shoes.”
Siwa just launched her first animated shorts series, The JoJo & BowBow Show Show starring Siwa and her furry best friend BowBow. She also works alongside Nick Cannon in Nickelodeon’s hit competition series Lip Sync Battle Shorties. She has also appeared on various Nickelodeon live-action series including School of Rock and The Thundermans. Siwa performed at Nickelodeon’s 2018 Kids’ Choice Awards and has won two blimps for Favorite Viral Music Artist in 2017 and Musical YouTube Creator in 2018. This summer, she performed at Nickelodeon’s 2018 Kids’ Choice Awards Mexico.
Siwa and Nickelodeon also have a licensing partnership for consumer products inspired by the star. She is a top licensed property with popular consumer products across multiple categories at retailers around the world. In May, the Licensing Industry Merchandisers' Association (LIMA) named JoJo the number one live-action licensed property. More than 41 million of her iconic bows have been sold globally, and she has a popular line of Danskin apparel and athleisure line at major US retailers.

JoJo Siwa Announces 'D.R.E.A.M.' EP and Tour
JoJo Siwa is releasing her first EP and embarking on a solo tour, a move that both expands the multi-hyphenate universe of the Nickelodeon and YouTube star, and signals the evolution of the network’s cross-platform business model.
The 15-year-old this afternoon broke the news about the four-song D.R.E.A.M. The Music, which Nickelodeon will drop via 200 digital service providers Nov. 16, the same day tickets go on sale to the general public for her 22-city North American tour, produced by Nickelodeon and AEG that launches May 17.
The venture is a sign of the direction Nickelodeon is heading under Viacom president/CEO Bob Bakish and newly minted Nick president Brian Robbins, of developing associated talent and IP—and holding them closer to the vest. Nick last March signed Siwa to an overall talent deal including original programming, music, live events, social media and consumer products.
Doug Cohn, Nickelodeon svp, music, tells Billboard the Siwa project has been “especially satisfying” for multiple reasons. “These songs aren’t born out of a specific show, as iCarly or Victorious were; rather they appear on all of our various platforms in a multitude of ways—both audio and visual. The landscape is changing, and Nickelodeon is changing with it.”
Of AwesomenessTV founder Robbins, who last month replaced longtime Nick chief Cyma Zarghami, Cohn says, “It’s an exciting time to be here because he has some fresh thinking about music’s place on the network. Ultimately, we want to… make sure that we are forging the best pacts that cultivate new stars and excite our audience.”
It’s also an exciting time for Siwa, who says seguing into singing was always part of her game plan. In April she released her song “Every Girl’s A Super Girl” exclusively through the videogame Star Stable. “I’ve evolved, and I got to the point where I thought, How can I make this bigger? How can I grow from here? And doing this EP was the next step for me,” she tells Billboard.
Siwa escalated to fame among the adolescent set via social platforms, particularly her YouTube Channel, which counts more than 8 million subscribers. That’s where she and Nickelodeon chose to premiere the music video for debut song D.R.E.A.M. on Nov. 3. “It’s kind-of backward in a way to release the video first on YouTube, but I thought, Why not?” Siwa says. “A lot of my fans are on YouTube; I thought it would be fun.”
It’s Siwa’s biggest video production yet, Cohn says, “and we wanted to share the video with her core fans first. The video was released last weekend and has well over 1.7 million streams. We have a ton of behind-the-scenes and other content that will be parsed out across all of our platforms… Our aim is to match the appropriate content with the best outlet for it.”
Aside from “D.R.E.A.M.,” the EP includes songs “Everyday Popstars,” “Only Getting Better” and “My Story,” an autobiographical tome that includes the lyric “I record/you press play.” “That’s literally my life,” Siwa says with a laugh.
Siwa was a headliner at the debut U.S. incarnation of Nickelodeon’s SlimeFest this summer in Chicago alongside Liam Payne and Flo Rida, but this tour marks her first solo run.
“I like when people sing along and dance, and the one thing I’ve learned is I have to set some rules with the audience,” she says. She also hinted surprise guests may join her on stage at select tour dates but stopped short of sharing more info, teasing, “I can’t tell you everything just yet, we’ll talk later.”

DOC NYC 2018 to Host World Premiere of 'The Orange Years' Classic Nickelodeon Fan Documentary [Updated w/ Sneak Peek]
DOC NYC has announced the exciting news that the 2018 Doc NYC documentary festival will host the world premiere of The Orange Years: The Nickelodeon Story, a brand-new fan-made documentary that takes a look at how Nickelodeon has become the number-one network for kids', on Thursday 15th November 2018 at 7:00pm at the SVA Theatre!
Using their combined skills in journalism and filmmaking as well as their mutual love for classic Nickelodeon, directors Adam Sweeney (part of the team behind The Prequels Strike Back: A Fan's Journey) and Scott Barber set out to make the documentary film Nickelodeon fans deserve. The childhood friends from The Woodlands grew up watching their beloved shows together and now share a new perspective on Nickelodeon.
The Orange Years journeys behind the scenes of the “kids first” phenomenal programming to chronicle the improbable and unprecedented success of Nickelodeon, straight from the mouths of those who brought the classic shows to fans as children. Filled with interviews from the actors, writers, animators, and creators from all your favorite golden age Nick shows, the film highlights the work of visionary Geraldine Laybourne, who was largely responsible for the network’s success in the early days.
Update (5/11): The upcoming Nickelodeon documentary titled The Orange Years will be holding its world premiere at DOC NYC on November 15, and to celebrate, ComingSoon.net has unveiled an awesome sneak-peek clip! Learn about how cult classic series The Adventures of Pete & Pete scored such great musical guest stars as Michael Stipe, Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, David Johanesen and Gordon Gano in the player below!
The Adventures of Pete & Pete star Danny Temberelli features in this clip, as he explains how series director Katherine Dieckmann had previously worked on the music videos “Shiny Happy People” and “Stand” for the band REM. That’s how they landed the band’s frontman Michael Stipe for a guest role, and that opened the door to have all sorts of cool guest stars.
The documentary has been been a labor of love for the filmmakers, who have interviewed some of the most famous and recognizable names from the channel's history, all the way back to its unlikely origins in Columbus, Ohio.
The film has an all-star Nickelodeon cast including Kenan Thompson (All That, Kenan & Kel, Good Burger, Saturday Night Live), Kel Mitchell (All That, Kenan & Kel, Good Burger, Game Shakers), Alisa Reyes (All That),
Marc Summers (Double Dare), Larisa Oleynik (The Secret World of Alex Mack), Phil Moore (Nick Arcade), Kirk Fogg (Legends of the Hidden Temple), Venus DeMilo (Salute Your Shorts), Michael Bower (Salute Your Shorts), and Danny Cooksey (Salute Your Shorts), Fred Keller (Hey Dude) and Christine McGlade (You Can’t Do That on Television).
Not that The Orange Years concentrates only on Nick's live-action output. The filmmakers also talked to talents from the groundbreaking animated division, like writer Mitchell Kriegman (Rugrats, Clarissa Explains it All), and the king of cartoon voice work, Tom Kenny (Rocko's Modern Life and SpongeBob SquarePants).
More than just a history lesson or a “where are they now?” special, the documentary explores the network’s revolutionary approach to storytelling, the impact it had on a generation of youth, and aims to find out of why these shows have stayed in the hearts of so many people.
The The Orange Years screening at the ninth annual DOC NYC festival will be attended by directors Scott Barber and Adam Sweeney; and '90s Nickelodeon stars Danny Tambarelli and Michael C. Maronna from The Adventures of Pete & Pete. Lee Leshen will serve as the panels moderator.

The childhood friends from The Woodlands grew up watching their beloved shows together and now share a new perspective on Nickelodeon.
