Wally Wingert - I Was Cosplay Before Cosplay Was Cool!
Saturday, Oct 27 at 4:30 PM
Room: 303
"Wally Wingert – I Was Cosplay Before Cosplay Was Cool!"
Today’s generation of cosplayers is unaware how difficult the craft of cosplay was before the arrival of the internet. Voice Actor (and self-proclaimed “Godfather of Cosplay”) Wally Wingert (Almighty Tallest Red on Invader ZIM) has been “dressing up” since he was a kid in the 60’s and 70’s. He got serious about it in 1980 after meeting Adam West in costume as Batman. (Wally is most likely the very first Adam West Batman cosplayer ever!) And he continued to cosplay as various characters through 2006! Though Wally’s cosplay creations occurred way before the proliferation of comic conventions (which earned him a fair amount of disdain and ridicule at the time) he nonetheless found a way to express his costumed endeavors through charitable functions and civic events. By the mid 80’s, Wally had created costumes of ’66 Batman, Superman, Darth Vader, Frank N. Furter, Michael Myers, Leatherface, Boy George, “Weird Al” Yankovic, and even 26 Muppet replicas! Complete with historical photos and funny anecdotes about the creation of these costumes before cosplay was a celebrated art form, Wally enlightens the LA Comic Con crowd about being one of the early pioneers of cosplay. Wally is an energetic and engaging speaker and utilizes his voice over skills when telling his stories. Those attributes combined with photos of his personal cosplay journey from a kid in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to landing in Hollywood and becoming a well known voice actor will make for a fun, informative, and inspirational panel suitable for all ages!

Nickelodeon, BBC, Cartoon Network Gaze Into the Future of TV at MipJunior 2018 [Updated] | MIPCOM
A power panel at MipJunior 2018 on Saturday afternoon saw executives peering into TV’s future and talking about multiple changes in the recent past
CANNES — “Never predict, especially about the future,” the saying goes. Three of MipJunior 2018’s key speakers and kids industry players – from Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and the BBC – took that to heart on Cannes’ Saturday afternoon when addressing the panel subject, “View from the Top: Gazing into the Future of Kids Media.” Rather than addressing where the business is headed – if they knew, they’d have ankled their jobs – Nickelodeon’s Jules Borkent, the BBC’s Jackie Edwards and Adina Pitt at Cartoon Network drilled down on the major changes and challenges affecting where the kids media business is today. Here are five insights:
1. THE NEW NAME OF THE GAME: PARTNERING
What has changed in the last couple of years? asked Borkent, Nickelodeon Senior Vice President (SVP), Global Acquisitions and International Programming. “For us, it’s about figuring out [how to meet] the desire for more and more content than we’re currently producing.” Nickelodeon’s solution: Partnerships, whether on wholly-owned or shared content or acquisitions. These have become “far more forefront on how we deliver content,” he commented. One case to point: Nickelodeon Latin America’s has just gone into production on fantasy fiction musical Club 57, its first co-production with Iginio Straffi’s Rainbow Group in Italy. “We’re working with partners that five years ago we wouldn’t necessarily have,” Borkent said.
2. RETOOLING FRANCHISES
“We’re focused on building brands and franchises,” said Pitt, Vice President (VP), Content Acquisitions & Co-Productions, Cartoon Network & Boomerang US. “That’s not just about looking for new franchises and experimenting, but also staying true to brands,” and re-tooling them, she suggested, instancing Total DramaRama. Created by Tom McGillis and Jennifer Pertsch for Fresh TV and distributed by Cake Ent., the Canadian animated action comedy series, which bowed on Cartoon Network on Sept. 1, places the characters of Total Drama in an alternate universe ageing them down from teens to toddlers. “It’s an important lesson: Sometimes go back, retool or reimagine the IP you have,” Pitt argued. Nickelodeon has also just done this with the network's recently launched Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a brand-new 2D animated series which premiered Sept. 17 that reimagines the iconic characters from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in a fresh new way.
3. LOCALIZATION – A BOON NOT A BANE
Considering China – “a great opportunity for new collaborations,” said Edwards, head of the BBC children’s acquisitions & independent animation – discussion turned to the ever more global industry. “It is a global industry and I think in the future that will be everybody’s challenge,” said Edwards. She went on: “When everything is everywhere and there is so much content, so many platforms, how are you to stand out? Sometimes localization gives you distinctiveness. As a public service broadcaster, I think that’s going to save us.”
4. LIVE ACTION OPENING UP
For many years, the multi-camera preserve of Nickelodeon and Disney, live action is one program option with ever more opportunity, as recent successes, such as Federation Kids & Family’s Find Me in Paris, which airs on Nickelodeon UK & Ireland illustrates. “We’re testing the waters with telenovelas,” said Borkent. “Live action is opening up more, as viewers are opening up to other cultures.”
5. NEWS OF THE LONGTERM DEMISE OF THE TELLY IS SOMEWHAT EXAGERRATED
According to Nickelodeon research, 65% of kids still regard a TV set as the “easiest model” to access content, Borkent said. “Most children are watching content on TV. They love character and story. Television is a showcase for the very best of it,” said Edwards. She added: “What will happen in the future is that channels will still endure for pre-school, while older kids will search for the same content on VOD platforms and YouTube.” That of course is already a growing reality. A Eurodata TV analysis – referred to during its MipJunior overview on Saturday of new trends in kids entertainment – suggests that daily TV viewing by younger and older children in both the U.S. and U.K. has fallen by pretty much one hour in both countries over 2012-17, from over 2 hours 20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes for 4-6 year-old kids in the U.K.. The future is now.
Additionally, Viacom's research unit says globally, teens now access content on 13 devices but TV sets remain the preferred screen. Over half say they prefer to watch content on a TV set.

This is the first initiative to be backed by the inaugural Nickelodeon Chinese Animation Development Project, supported by China’s National Radio & Television Administration.
The announcement comes at a time of rapid growth in China’s animation industry, the value of which exceeded RMB 100bn in 2016. Children’s animation is considered by many to be an area of very high potential in the Chinese entertainment industry.

"Deer Run, with its endearing and humorous storylines and compelling, relatable characters, proves that great original animation content can come from any part of the world," said Nina Hahn, Senior Vice President, International Production & Development, Nickelodeon.
The expanded co-operation between iQIYI and VIMN was announced this week by representatives of both companies at an event during MIPCOM, a leading annual trade show held in Cannes, France.

Q’orianka Kilcher Joins Cast of Paramount’s Live-Action ‘Dora the Explorer’ Movie
Q’orianka Kilcher, who starred in TNT’s Emmy-nominated limited series, The Alienist, will play Inca Princess Kawillaka in Paramount Player’s iteration live-action take of Nickelodeon’s beloved Dora the Explorer, Deadline has revealed! Kilcher joins Isabela Moner (100 Things to Do Before High School, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Transformers: The Last Knight, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, Instant Family), Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives, Overboard), and Michael Pena in Australia where the picture is currently shooting.
Directed by James Bobin, the story follows Dora (Moner) dealing with high school and leading a new group of friends on an adventure with her sidekick, Boots the monkey, and famed cousin Diego played by newcomer Micke Moreno.
Madeleine Madden, Adriana Barraza, Temuera Morrison, and Nicholas Coombe are also set to co-star. Produced by Paramount Players, Walden Media, and Nickelodeon, Dora the Explorer hits theaters August 2.
Kilcher, who starred as Pocahontas opposite Colin Farrell Terrence Malick’s 2005 film The New World, and recently appeared alongside Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, Timothée Chalamet, Ben Foster and Jesse Plemons in Scott Cooper’s western, Hostiles.
The actor repped by APA, Anonymous Content, and attorney Eric Feig.
Kilcher now joins Eva Longoria and Michael Peña, who play the parents of the titular character; Eugenio Derbez (Overboard, Instructions Not Included; How to Be A Latin Lover), who plays Alejandro, a mysterious jungle inhabitant who tries to protect the teenagers from the marauders; big screen newcomer Micke Moreno (Escobar: Paradise Lost), in the role of cousin Diego; Nicholas Coombe (Spy Kids: Mission Control, Midnight Sun) as Randy, a fellow high schooler who develops an immediate crush on Dora; Madeleine Madden (Picnic at Hanging Rock, Tidelands) as the school’s snooty class president, Sammy; and Academy Award nominee Adriana Barraza (Babel, Amores Perros, Thor, The 33) as Dora’s grandma, Abuelita Valerie, Temuera Morrison (Green Lantern, Moana), who will play the role of Powell, and Madelyn Miranda, who portrays Young Dora.
Per the studio, the movie will tell the story of Dora, a girl who has spent most of her life exploring the jungle with her parents, but now must navigate her most dangerous adventure yet: high school. Always the explorer, Dora quickly finds herself leading Boots (her best friend, a monkey), Diego, and a rag tag group of teens on a live-action adventure to save her parents and solve the impossible mystery behind a lost Inca civilization.
Dora the Explorer is produced by Christopher Robin producer Kristin Burr, who is joined by longtime Bobin associate, executive producer John G. Scotti (The Muppets, Muppets Most Wanted, Alice Through the Looking Glass) as well as executive producers Julia Pistor (The Spiderwick Chronicles, A Series of Unfortunate Events) and Eugenio Derbez.
Bobin has assembled a talented team behind the camera that also includes reunions with Oscar®-winning production designer Dan Hennah (Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, Alice Through the Looking Glass) and costume designer Rahel Afiley (The Muppets, Muppets Most Wanted, Flight of the Conchords). The pair will be joined by six-time Goya Award winning (and BAFTA nominated) cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe, A.S.C. (Secretos del corazón, The Others, Blue Jasmine, Thor: Ragnarok), film editor Mark Everson (Paddington, Paddington 2) and BAFTA-nominated VFX supervisor Andy Brown (Black Panther, House of Flying Daggers, Moulin Rouge!)
Dora the Explorer is currently in production, and is filming entirely in Australia’s Gold Coast, in the state of Queensland on the continent’s east coast south of Brisbane. Village Roadshow Studios, where the production is headquartered, has been host to several major Hollywood movies in the last few years, including The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Shallows, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok and, most recently, DC’s Aquaman. In addition to designer Hennah’s stage builds, the production is utilizing Queensland’s diverse landscape, notably tropical forests near Tamborine Mountain and Tallebudgera, to portray Dora’s jungle habitat.
Dora the Explorer is a Paramount Players and Nickelodeon production in association with Walden Media. The film is being supported by the Queensland Government via Screenland Queensland. Paramount will release the film on August 2, 2019.

David Blue Joins Cast of 'Henry Danger' Season 5 in Recurring Role
Actor David Blue (Breadwinners, Stargate Universe, Ugly Betty) is joining the cast of Nickelodeon’s Henry Danger in a recurring role, TVLine has learned. Blue will appear throughout Season 5, which is now airing on Nickelodeon USA. Details on Blue’s role are being kept under wraps.
The youngest of three boys, David Blue grew up as the comedian of the family. A lifelong actor, singer and dancer, Blue spent years performing onstage. He eventually graduated from the conservatory at the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in both Acting and Musical Theatre Performance. Following an Acting Apprenticeship at the world-renowned Actor's Theatre of Louisville, he made the move to Los Angeles.
Blue's first starring role was in a movie entitled Winter Follies, which was the fresh-out-of-film school project of Saw II (2005)/Saw III (2006) director Darren Lynn Bousman.
Appearances all across the dial soon followed, including CW's hit series Veronica Mars, FX's Dirt and many others. But one of David's best-known roles was as Cliff St. Paul on ABC's hit Ugly Betty (2006). His work on which inspired a submission for a possible Emmy Nomination. Concurrently, Blue joined the cast of CBS' Moonlight (2007) as technology-obsessed vampire Logan Griffen. During his second season of Ugly Betty, Blue was announced as eventual fan-favorite Eli Wallace in Syfy's SGU Stargate Universe (2009), opposite Robert Carlyle.
A seasoned vocalist, Blue has performed onstage with many talents, including Dick Van Dyke and Victor Garber. He starred in the re-imagining of Howard Ashman's Dreamstuff, headlining alongside Fred Willard, Vicki Lewis, and Eden Espinosa. He still enjoys returning to the stage between television and film projects, as he did recently with a performance as Feste in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.
Henry Danger season five continues to follow Henry Hart (Jace Norman) as he navigates a double life as Kid Danger, the superhero sidekick to Captain Man (Cooper Barnes). The new season will introduce brand-new villains and offer surprises that will expand the mythology of the show. Henry Danger cast also includes: Riele Downs as “Charlotte;” Sean Ryan Fox as “Jasper;” Ella Anderson as “Piper Hart;” Jeffrey Nicholas Brown as “Mr. Hart,” and Michael D. Cohen as “Schwoz,” who has been upped to a series regular. Christopher J. Nowak will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Jake Farrow is executive producer. Henry Danger is created by Dan Schneider.
