Viacom Américas Names Claudia Varela as VP, Advertising Sales for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean

Viacom International Media Networks – Américas (VIMN) has announced the appointment of Claudia Varela as Vice President (VP) of Advertising Sales for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

Based in Mexico City, the executive will report to Eduardo Lebrija, Senior Vice President (SVP) and General Manager (GM) of VIMN Americas for Mexico, Colombia, Central America and the Caribbean.

Varela has experience in media and multi-platform advertising. At Viacom, she will develop commercial solutions for brands, advertisers and agencies that seek to connect in a unique way with audiences on linear platforms as well as on social platforms and mobile devices. Varela will also collaborate closely with the Ad Trade Marketing area, where both teams will develop brand strategies for each client and comprehensive, experiential and 360 creative solutions for the advertisers and clients of the Viacom portfolio.

In this role, Varela will oversee all Viacom's commercial opportunities in the aforementioned markets: linear TV advertising for MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Comedy Central, Paramount Channel, VH1; and non-linear for the digital AVOD and SVOD platforms of brands such as MTV Play, Nickelodeon Play and Comedy Central Play. In addition, she will lead commercial strategies for Viacom's extensive experiential offering of events including the Premios MTV MIAW, Kids' Choice Awards México, Comedy Fest, Día del juego, Verano Nick and MTV Emergente, among others.

Lebrija commented, "Varela brings to Viacom extensive and solid experience developing commercial solutions for entertainment and technology products. Viacom to Launch Paramount Play SVOD Service in Poland in October 2018; To Include Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. Programming

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) has announced plans to launch a Paramount-branded subscription video-on-demand (SVoD) service for the first time in the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) region! Viacom announced the news on Monday 8th October 2018 at the 45th PIKE International Conference and Exhibition in Lodz.


Titled Paramount Play, the service is due to debut during the second half of October 2018 in Poland, and will initially be part of the service Play Now of the mobile operator P4 and in the offer of the cable operator Toya. More network operators are expected to add the service in the coming months.

It will offer a wide curated selection of Paramount Pictures movies, such as Saving Private Ryan, The Godfather, Forrest Gump, A Beautiful Mind, The Terminal, Transformers, and Mission Impossible, and will offer access to the video libraries of MTV Polska, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. educational preschool series, including, including American Beauty, Beverly Hills Cop, Geordie Shore, Pimp My Ride, Inside Amy Schumer, Takeshi’s Castle, South Park, SpongeBob SquarePants, School of Rock, and Paw Patrol.

Titles available at launch include movies American Beauty, Transformers, The Terminal and Beverly Hills Cop and series Geordie Shore, Ex on the Beach, Pimp My Ride, Comedy Club, Inside Amy Schumer, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Thundermans, Dora the Explorer and Paw Patrol.


The service will also include Polish MTV and Comedy Central local TV productions like Warsaw Shore, Teen Mom Polska and Drunk History Poland, which will be available on Paramount Play immediately after they premiere on TV this autumn.

In Poland, Paramount Play will be available through STBs and within TV everywhere and OTT apps as a standalone service. Affiliate partners’ premium subscribers will be able to access the service for low or no additional cost.

“Paramount Play is an important extension of our content offering for our distribution partners, which will diversify our footprint and bolster our market leading position in CEE,” said Bartosz Witak, Senior Vice President (SVP), General Manager (GM) for VIMN in Central and Eastern Europe and Israel.

“A perfect complement to our linear TV business, this service enables our partners to offer unique, extra content to their premium customers, which will be accessible anytime, anywhere and on any device. Easy navigation between our brands under a single Paramount+ user interface will also boost discoverability of our content more broadly.”

Poland is the first market within Central and Eastern Europe and the second globally to receive the Paramount-branded entertainment aggregate service, following the introduction of Paramount+ in the Nordics.

The news follows Viacom launching the award-winning Nickelodeon Play VOD app in in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) in September 2018. The app debuted in Serbia, and will roll-out in more territories in the near future.

Composer Pat Irwin Discusses 'Rocko’s Modern Life' and More

Composer and former The B-52s band member Pat Irwin discusses Rocko’s Modern Life, The Good Cop & more!


Nickelodeon’s beloved animated series Rocko’s Modern Life was a staple for a lot of kids in the mid-’90s and over the years has even garnered a new generation of viewers through reruns. So when Nick announced it was making a new made-for-television movie version of the show with the original voice cast members, fans were over the moon. The film is called Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling and is slated to be released soon. On top of the original voice cast members coming back to the project, the show’s composer Pat Irwin will also be creating new tunes for the latest installment. Irwin scored the entire original run of the show along with hits such as Nurse Jackie, Pepper Ann, and a few episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants to name a few. Aside from Rocko, Irwin’s music can also be heard on Netflix’s The Good Cop, which just premiered starring Tony Danza and Josh Groban. Nerd Reactor decided to speak with Irwin about creating these iconic scores and more in this interview.

You scored the iconic Rocko’s Modern Life for Nick. Can you tell us how that came about and what initially attracted you to the project?

I was in a band called the Raybeats that was making a little noise around New York City when Nickelodeon was starting out as a network. It just so happened that an executive at Nickelodeon was a Raybeats fan and he recommended me for the job. I’ve always loved cartoon music and this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.


Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling

Whenever you are looking back on Rocko’s Modern Life, what do you remember most about working on the project?

I remember the musicians. We had a phenomenal band and we really began to play like one. Kevin Norton, who at the time was playing with Anthony Braxton, set the tone for everyone. David Hofstra played bass and tuba. He was in the Raybeats for a while and he also played with the Contortions, The Microscopic Septet, John Zorn, and just about everyone else in the Downtown music scene. Art Baron played the trombone and Rob DeBellis played the clarinet. Art was in the Duke Ellington Orchestra. He’s a master and brought a depth of playing that set the tone for not only the band but my writing. Rob was playing in a band called Big Trouble and was also playing in a band led by the great Don Byron. Don had just put out a record called Bug Music that featured some of the great cartoon music written by Raymond Scott. These musicians raised the level of the whole experience.

Over 20 years after Rocko’s Modern Life went off the air, Nick is bringing it back with a new feature film titled Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling. Are you doing anything to update the score? Also, are there techniques or instruments that you used on the original that aren’t available now?

I used the same band on the movie that played on the cartoon, so it was kind of like a family reunion. Dan Rieser also played drums on some of the cues. Dan has worked with me on The Good Cop, Nurse Jackie, and Bored to Death, and is one of my favorite musicians.

You are currently scoring Netflix’s The Good Cop. Is there a different approach to scoring live action as opposed to animation?

When you score for animation the music gets much closer to the picture. Sometimes it feels like you’re inside the drawings. When you score for live action it’s up to the composer to find more distance.

Even though Rocko’s Modern Life and The Good Cop are two completely different shows, are there any similarities between the two show scores?

To be honest, I can’t find any similarities between the scores for Rocko and The Good Cop except they’re both written by the same composer.

Your résumé includes four episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants. Can you tell us a little about that?

The score for SpongeBob was created using mostly needle drops. The music editor, Nick Carr, and I had worked together on Rocko and Pepper Ann. Nick pulled together the library for SpongeBob and asked me to contribute.

Would you like to score more SpongeBob?

I love SpongeBob and would gladly score more if I had the time.

If given the opportunity to score any of the Marvel projects, which one would you pick?

Marvel! I’m a Silver Surfer fan.
