Nickelodeon India Celebrates Father's Day with Mumbai Dabbawalas and their Kids

Dads get a hundred mails daily at work. Celebrating the week of Father’s Day, Nickelodeon, India’s leading kid’s entertainment franchise - decided to make a work day special for dads with a special surprise delivery. Partnering with Mumbai’s lifeline – The Dabbawalas to celebrate the occasion, popular Nicktoons from Nickelodeon packed a Dabba full of love for dads across Mumbai.


As part of an unique initiative that celebrates the unbreakable bond of love and trust shared between fathers and children, Nickelodeon sent adorable messages to kids asking them to express their love and admiration for their Dad’s. The messages were then picked up by the Dabbawalas and delivered to the Dads who were thrilled with their sweet special surprise.

The initiative also extended on-ground to bring some magic and love into the life of the dabbawalas who made all this possible. Celebrating their relentless spirit and effort that ensures we and our families are always happy and healthy, Nickelodeon set out to curate some magical moments for the Dabbawallas to enjoy with their kids. A fulfilled evening of games and entertainment with the Nicktoons Motu Patlu, Shiva, Ninja Hatori and Rudra ensured that each of our spirited Dabbawalla’s had the time of their life, celebrating Father’s Day with their children.


The campaign is also being brought to life online on www.nickindia.com with kids being asked to share a treasured photo and answer questions on their best time spent with their dad. A customized e-card on the same will then be sent to the Father’s email id.

So kids, this father’s day, surprise your dad with a special message of love from you!

How Viacom Uses AI to Predict the Success of its Social Campaigns

To eliminate some of the guesswork from its social media campaigns, Viacom has turned to machines.


Over the past year, a seven-person data science team in Viacom’s ad sales group has been building a pipeline to collect near-real time information about how its social media posts perform. This way, the entertainment giant can predict how many social posts it will need to reach audience goals and what kinds of posts to use in each campaign.

Using the product, Viacom set performance benchmarks for different kinds of social media posts by platform and all its brands, which include Nickelodeon, MTV and Comedy Central. Viacom evaluates everything from branded content campaigns to posts designed to drive tune-ins to tentpole shows like Nickelodeon's annual Kids' Choice Awards, Kids' Choice Sports and HALO Awards and MTV’s Video Music Awards with the benchmarks. The data pipeline, which pulls information from social platforms sometimes as frequently as every five minutes, is also designed to give Viacom’s departments easy access to the data.

“We see a lot of inefficiencies in the way things are done,” said Matthew Moocarme, a senior data scientist for Viacom, who gave a presentation on the effort at the Advertising Research Foundation’s Audience x Science event on June 12. “Right now, the goal of this is to report back on how well we’ve performed [on social].”

Viacom operates social handles for everything from its channels to its shows to the individual characters in them, including Nickelodeon and SpongeBob SquarePants. It runs over 400 YouTube channels, 430 Facebook pages, 60 Instagram handles and 100 Twitter handles. Viacom publishes hundreds of times per day on each platform, except for YouTube.

Viacom uses the posts for a variety of purposes, including driving traffic to its websites, social impressions for advertisers and awareness of its own programming. Internal brand marketing agency Viacom Velocity markets the content Viacom’s brands produce, and social media platforms are a key distribution channel.

Moocarme said that prior to the creation of its internal system, groups like Velocity and the ad sales group his team reports used third-party benchmarks to see if their social media content was working. But those third party solutions all had their own shortcomings; some third-party tools, for example, make it difficult to use third-party tools to determine how much paid promotion affects content performance.

The pipeline has already helped unearth insights that inform Viacom’s campaigns. For example, the company uses the technology to determine when to use influencers to drive content. The technology can tell within eight hours of a post’s publication whether it will perform well relative to its expected results.

“At all our tentpoles, we have these dedicated social war rooms,” Moocarme said. “If you know you have to produce another post, you want to know with as much time as possible.”

Although Moocarme and his group run analyses for different stakeholders inside Viacom, they can use it to conduct their own experiments and create their own models, too. That’s part of a broader push to make data more widely available across the organization. Several weeks ago, the company also launched a data marketplace that gives Viacom executives an ability to browse the data sets available across the organization, sample them and request them more efficiently.

“Our ethos within the data science team is innovation and automation,” Moocarme said. “That means automating the boring parts.”

Although social media has been around for years now, it can still feel like a bit of a stab in the dark for businesses who are trying to connect with their audience.

One company that’s shedding some light on the problem is US media company Viacom, which has been using AI to predict what’s going to do well across its platforms.

Over the last year the company has let its data science team loose on social to gather near-real-time information on how its posts are performing.

Using the insights their system can predict how many social posts it will need to use to hit its targets and what kind will be best across different brands, which include Nickelodeon, MTV and Comedy Central.

Before they went deep on their data the company was using third-party benchmarks to see how well posts were performing which, as anyone who’s tangoed behind the scenes of social knows, often don’t cut it.

The team has been using the insights to figure out key things like when to bring in influencers and whether a post will perform as well as expected, which it can tell within eight hours of publication.

It seems like they might be onto something too, with a recent report from MarketsandMarkets predicting that AI in the social media market will grow from $633.1m in 2018 to an incredible $2,197.1m by 2023.

Nickelodeon’s ‘Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Gets First Look at Annecy 2018

For the past thirty years, each generation has had their own version of the turtles, with the next ready to burst from the sewers this fall

Co-executive producers Andy Suriano and Ant Ward were in Annecy for their first time this year to give an in-depth, behind the scenes look at their forthcoming series, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Variety reports.

Held at the Salle Pierre Lamy, the two execs showed artwork, explained the development process which led to the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, and even screened a two-minute clip from the show, which will be launched by Nickelodeon this fall.

All of the work on the series is being handled by Nickelodeon in Los Angeles, apart from animation which is being done at Australia’s Flying Bark. “They are killing it!” said Ward.

As one might except from the title, Nickelodeon’s Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles won’t be picking up where previous iterations of the intellectual property (IP) have dropped off, but rather a fresh retelling of the stories behind Raphael, Michelangelo, Donatello and Leonardo, with other TMNT staples to feature. Confirmed so far are a Splinter and April O’Neil.

In Nickelodeon’s new series, the turtles and April will be younger, and the brothers are not yet the martial arts masters that fans might expect. April is no longer the red-headed reporter in a yellow trench, but a African-American girl that can hold her own with the boys, and the four turtles are now each different species. Splinter is still a rat, but has a look that will likely catch audiences off guard. Based on its reaction, the audience was.


Additionally, slight changes were made to the weapons of choice for the turtles.

As for the villains, fans will be happy to see that an updated and stylized Foot Clan will still be harassing the turtles. But that’s where the bad-guy similarities end. A roster of new villains was unveiled, including the John Cena-voiced Draxum. Others announced were Meat Sweats, Hypno-Potamus, Warren Stone and Albearto.

The new crew of baddies won’t just be fodder for the turtles either.

“With Nick we said these are TMNT like we haven’t seen them before,” Suriano explained, “This is the beginning of their careers, we don’t want them to win. We want them to get their butts kicked once in a while.”

Another step in a different direction will be how New York City is represented in the show. According to Suriano and Ward, this New York City will be modern, bright and with a secret underbelly influenced by the film Big Trouble in Little China.

“Modern New York is a melting pot,” Ward said at the presentation, “We thought: ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we found a way to explore that melting pot of mythological creatures and fables of all New York? What if it was also Big Trouble in Little Italy, or Big Trouble in Little India?’”

And just like in Big Trouble in Little China, those worlds exist underneath the city. Landscapes with distinct cultural indicators were shown in the presentation, often accompanied by very large heads, which Ward explained are some of Suriano’s favorite features to include in set design.

Also announced was the all-star cast that will voice the series characters: Josh Brener (Silicon Valley); Donatello, played by Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation); Leonardo, Omar Benson Miller (Ballers); Raphael, Brandon Mychal Smith (Dirty Grandpa); Michelangelo, and Kat Graham (The Vampire Diaries). April O’Neil, joined the aforementioned John Cena in the sound booth.
