Nickelodeon Italy To Premiere 'Blurt!' On Wednesday 25th April 2018

NICKELODEON ITALY TO PREMIERE NEW ORIGINAL TV MOVIE, BLURT, ON WEDNESDAY 25TH APRIL 2018

STARRING HENRY DANGER’S JACE NORMAN, JOJO SIWA AND DANIELLA PERKINS

Nickelodeon Italy (Italia) will premiere a new original TV movie, Blurt (formerly Inside Voice), on Wednesday 25th April 2018, starring Jace Norman (Henry Danger, Adam & Adam, Il mio amico è una bestia), JoJo Siwa (Lip Sync Battle Shorties) and Daniella Perkins (Knight Squad). The live-action comedy tells the story of Jeremy Martin (Jace Norman) who, after a comical virtual reality mishap, starts speaking every thought he has out loud and to complicate matters, he happens to be running in the school election. The film is locally titled Jeremy senza freni in Italy.

Jeremy Martin is a nice-guy and when he puts on mysterious virtual reality glasses at the mall, he suddenly loses his “inside voice” and starts spouting every thought he has out loud. Making matters worse, Jeremy is running for student council president against his classmate Milly (Daniella Perkins), who is full of great ideas to improve the school. Desperate to get back to normal, Jeremy and his sister Victoria (JoJo Siwa) must figure out how to convince his brain that he can speak up for himself. Can they do it, or will Jeremy be stuck saying his thoughts out loud forever?!

The virtual reality sequences featured in the movie are being developed and created by Nickelodeon’s Entertainment Lab, the network’s new division spearheading long-range research and development efforts around new technologies for Nick and its audience. Blurt is the second on-air project fed through the lab, following Fuga dalla biblioteca di Mr Lemoncello.

Blurt is executive produced by Scott McAboy and Michael Sammaciccia. Amy Sydorick is serving as producer. Jace Norman is serving as co-producer. The TV movie was written by Adrian Vina (Vampiro Per Caso) and is directed by Michelle Johnston (Another Cinderella Story: If The Shoe Fits).

Blurt made its world debut on Nickelodeon USA on Monday 19th February 2018, and will be rolling out on Nickelodeon channels worldwide throughout 2018.

How JAM Media Is Refining A Mixed-Media World With "Becca’s Bunch" | Nickelodeon [Updated]

How JAM Media is producing one of its most complex hybrid projects in the upcoming preschool series, Becca's Bunch, which is set to debut on Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. channels globally in 2018.

Update (23/4): JAM Media will be hosting a Work in Progress session for Becca's Bunch at Annecy 2018! Taking place on Tuesday 12th June 2018 between 14:00 - 15:15 at Salle Pierre Lamy, the session will feature speakers: John Rice, Executive Producer, Jam Media; Alan Shannon, Executive Producer, Jam Media; and Conor Finnegan, Series Director, Jam Media; and will be moderated by Christophe Erbes, Writer and Consultant, Kids Media Cnsulting. The panel session is open to Students, Meetings and Mifa badgeholders, by reservation.

Having produced a number of mixed-media series like Picme and Roy, JAM Media is always up for a challenge. But when the Dublin, Ireland-based company agreed to adapt an award-winning original short film—Fear of Flying by Irish filmmaker Conor Finnegan—it nearly met its match.

Finnegan’s nine-minute film tells the story of a little bird who overcomes his fear of flying and follows his feathered friends south. Funded under the Irish Film Board’s Frameworks scheme, the short features a unique blend of live-action puppetry with 2D/3D animation. Among its many awards, it garnered Best Animation at both Ireland’s Galway Film Fleadh and the LA Shorts Festival in 2012.

“We saw the short in Galway on its premiere, and were really taken by its visual appeal and tactile quality,” JAM CCO Alan Shannon tells Kidscreen's Jeremy Dickson. Coincidentally, JAM head of development Chris Dicker was already floating an idea for a series starring a very positive and adventurous female lead. With a golden opportunity in its grasp, JAM optioned the film and brought Finnegan in to help art direct and craft a long-form preschool series with Dicker. JAM’s Dublin studio, meanwhile, got to work on the show’s stories and characters, and Manchester-based prodco and stop-motion animation expert Factory (Clangers, Scream Street) was hired to produce the series’ live-action elements.

Using a mix of live-action, puppetry, 2D and 3D animation similar to the short, the full series was renamed Becca’s Bunch. It follows the titular bird character and her friends as they head out on adventures in Wagtail Woods. Nickelodeon Senior Vice President (SVP) of International Production and Development Nina Hahn says the project was introduced to her and Nick’s Vice President (VP) of Content Acquisitions, Layla Lewis, at a very early stage. And it was love at first sight.

“They showed us the short even before they did the formal pitch into our larger group, which allowed us to give them feedback from multiple different filters on what we wanted to see,” Hahn says. “The content itself had a lot of the DNA of Nickelodeon, from the visual quirkiness, to the way the characters were developed and its strong female lead at the center. It really tapped into the kind of broad, emotional and simple ideas that we like to work with.”

As a result, Nickelodeon secured exclusive broadcast rights to the 52 x 11-minute series in the US, as well as global pay-TV rights, in October 2016. The show is slated to debut in 2018, with a premiere date to be announced nearer the launch. Three months later, JAM brokered a deal with Australia’s ABC Kids, and CBC Kids snapped up the series for Canada in May. Most recently, French terrestrial France Télévisions has acquired the rights for the show.

Learning curve

According to the show’s executive producers Shannon and JAM CEO John Rice, the project has been both a delight and a major challenge. “We never make things easy on ourselves, and we hit the jackpot with this one because it combines so many different little processes, some that we weren’t very well versed in,” says Shannon.

The production process begins with shooting live-action footage of puppets on customized rods built by Factory that give the characters a unique gait. The puppets are shot against real backgrounds to preserve the IP's (intellectual property) textural look and feel. Then in post, the rods are digitally removed, and the characters’ limbs and facial expressions are added using CGI animation.

“There’s a massive learning curve in how to compose shots in such a way that there’s less impact down the line for the digital process,” says Shannon. “For instance, all of the puppetry is carried out in real time, which sounds like it should be quick, but it’s far from it. It saves a little time on the floor, but the addition of the CG elements with the digital elements takes a long time.”

Other challenges involved figuring out how to accommodate multiple puppeteers using the rod-powered puppets on a very small set, taking the rods out for de-rigging, and removing shadows cast from the rods onto the puppets. The biggest obstacle, however, was matching the live-action footage exactly with CG elements.

“Even though we have tracking points on every puppet, using those as guides for where the limbs might go didn’t prove very successful at all, and at that point a large majority of the first 26 episodes were already shot,” says Shannon. “In the end, we had to reconstruct from scratch exact replicas of the characters in CG, even down to their indivdual hairs. Then we had to refine those rigs repeatedly until they matched exactly. It enabled us to copy the live-action motion so at least all of the eyes, beaks and limbs looked believable.”

Regarding the decision to use live action, Finnegan says shooting the puppets at 25 or 30 frames per second allows for more fluidity, since stop-motion is often filmed at a lower frame rate. “It has a much more analog feel, so when a character stops walking they will still bob around a little bit because the puppeteer may not have a completely solid hand. You can tell that there are a lot of people behind the craft of the puppets and the world,” says Finnegan.

For Rice, the production’s approach is paying off, now that the series is well into its second round of 26 episodes. At press time, 33 episodes and all 52 animatics had been shot, and three episodes were complete. “The learnings we’ve taken have also extended onto our other new shows like Jessy and Nessy,” says Rice. “And from a few of the Becca images we’ve posted, we’ve already had a number of rights holders and production companies looking to work with us to adapt the style on other properties.”

Going forward, Shannon says JAM will look to tie up presales in non-Nick territories, and begin discussions with a number of toy companies and licensees. “We already have two publishing deals secured, Egmont for the world and Candlewick for the US, and we expect to make some interesting announcements in the coming months,” he says.

With Rise Of Localised Content Creation In India, Kids Genre To Grow By 12-14% In 2018

India - Even though the kids genre in India is still under indexed, it still has the potential to grow beyond limits. Industry experts believe that owning the intellectual properties (IPs) and localisation of the content is going to be a way forward for the category, which is expected to grow by 10-14 per cent in 2018.

Nickelodeon India's Shiva

Nina Elavia Jaipuria, Business Head, Kids Entertainment Cluster at Viacom18, the parent company on Nickelodeon India, told exchange4media.com: “I think slowly and steadily we all have realized that we are great at conceptualizing, developing and creating our own content. Therefore over the years, a lot of local content has evolved in the genre. The dependence on international content that we acquired from the West is going to dwindle and local IPs will evolve even more. We will continue to grow as broadcast and local IPs and that’s the future.”

Echoing similar thoughts on the local IPs, Leena Lele Dutta, Business Head, SPN Kids genre added, “what has worked for us was local characters, names and stories. This is the reason the channel has such good viewership today. We intentionally moved away from alien characters as we would have needed a long time to establish them.” The channel completed a year recently.

“Over the years, local animation has definitely come of age as Indian characters sit comfortably alongside global ones within the kids’ landscape. At Disney, our stories and characters remain region and platform agnostic,” said Devika Prabhu, Executive Director – Content and Communications, Media Networks, Disney India.

Talking about the growth in the genre, Nina mentioned, “I see a lot of growth this year, now that GST and demonetization is behind us, the category will grow 12-15 per cent, both in terms of viewership and ad sales.” Whereas Ashish Bhasin, Chairman & CEO - South Asia, Dentsu Aegis Network, feels that the growth will be more or less in the line of overall television growth, which is expected to be around 10-12 per cent.

Challenges in the kids genre space

As per the BARC data, children, as an audience i.e: the age group of 02-14 years, account for 20 per cent of total TV impressions. This is the highest share across all age cuts. However, the biggest challenge the industry is witnessing is that a lot of content which kids consume is on GEC or a movie channel.

87 per cent kids in 2-14 age group watch non-kids channels, while only 13 per cent watch kids channels, according to a research report by BARC India titled ‘A Peek into Kids Viewership’.

Krishna Desai, Executive Director & Network Head - Kids, South Asia, Turner India, “Kids are increasingly exposed to a range of content online and offline. Their viewing habits are dynamic and ever-evolving. While they are exposed to a vast range of other content, cartoons hold a special place in their hearts. However, the fact remains that due to the burgeoning phenomenon of Indian households primarily owning a single television set, since decades, the percentage of time spent by kids watching kids’ channels has flattened out to not more than 20 per cent.”

On the Production Front

Recently, Discovery Kids launched Little Singham in partnership with Reliance Animation Studio. Also on completing a year, Sony Yay announced their new character Kicko. Viacom18 will also be launching their fifth IP.

Speaking about the production part of the industry, Shibasish Sarkar, COO, Reliance Entertainment explained, “What is lacking in the Indian animation industry is its equation with cartoons. When you talk about animation, people only think of it in terms of cartoons. Today animation is for all ages, you can’t define that it is only for children. When we started animation in the country, it was all about mythological characters such as, Ram, Krishna and Arjun, because all these characters were established in viewers' minds. You really don’t need to spend money on these characters. But if we launch a new character, we also need to establish them, and you need to have some kind of engagement with kids. The problem is, we don't have that kind of funds available in India, because we are still growing and the industry is not that mature.”

He further added, “Nobody is ready to put that much investment in, but in the West, they first create characters, interact with kids, then convert it into a show. Now that we are maturing, we have to come out with shows like Little Singham, where we can start connecting with the kids, but again Singham is an established brand. Also we need to be very strong in pre-production. India is very weak in pre -roduction, as we do not have much talent in India. Also we have to create awareness about animation is.”

Desai also mentioned that animation is not a quick and easy process; it involves thorough visualization and storytelling. “Currently, the major challenge which India faces is a relatively low supply of key talent in animation, especially when it comes to local writers and storyboard artists. While there is incredible potential, there is a need for animation education and training, and the creation of a skilled workforce in India. With the right kind of funding and education, we can be confident of Indian animation standards being on par with global counterparts.”

Kids --the under indexed category

Although it is a robust category, the genre is still under leveraged. Uttam Pal Singh- Head of Discovery Kids feels it is more of an industry call here. “We have meetings with our sales team and with advertisers, but what we essentially understand is that kids. as an audience, are becoming stronger, the genre is growing. You cannot really ignore them and I think things will improve.”

“The genre has a total of 7 percent of viewership on TV, but does not have more 50 per cent of Adex. The kids genre is not the only category which is serving children, but the situation is getting better,” said Jaipuria.

Disney's Prabhu refused to mention numbers, but she said while advertising remains under-indexed for this genre, “we continue to witness a high double digit growth on Disney Channels on the back of great performance and partnerships.”

Talking about the growth, Jaipuria shared, “Despite having headwinds, thanks to GST, we have still seen a fairly robust growth on the top line and ad revenue perspective. We have grown between 12-15 per cent which include the subscription revenue as well. Meanwhile, Dutta believed that ad revenue in the category has remained stable.
