Viacom Launches Apprenticeship Scheme At London HQ; Rebrands 'MTV Breaks' As 'Viacom Breaks'

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) has created a new 15-month paid apprenticeship scheme, which will offer four applicants the opportunity to study towards a junior content producer NVQ Level 3 qualification.

The recruitment process will start in Summer 2018 with the successful candidates being appointed in November 2018. Apprentices will have the opportunity to work across a range of departments including Milkshake!, MTV Talent and Comedy Central digital.

The company has also re-branded 'MTV Breaks' to 'Viacom Breaks' with the opportunity for around 40 successful applicants to start work in June 2018 across its entire portfolio of channels including Nickelodeon, Channel 5, MTV, and Comedy Central, earning £19,890 (GPB) for the year.

This twelve month scheme will launch on Monday 19th February 2018 and the company also hopes to fill more than 60 four-day work experience opportunities in its Hawley Crescent headquarters in Camden, North London.

John Cena Shares His Love For Kids And How They Inspire Him | KCA 2018

John Cena has no children of his own, but the WWE superstar has practically dedicated his work to kids.

Cena has fulfilled nearly 600 wishes for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, more than any other celebrity. He's hosting Nickelodeon’s 2018 Kids' Choice Awards for the second year in a row this Saturday from 8:00 P.M. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon USA and YTV Canada — one of three projects in the works with the children's network: Cena is lending his voice to an original villain named Baron Draxum in the brand-new 2D animated series Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, premiering late 2018, and executive producing Nickelodeon's new kids' competition show, Keep it Spotless, premiering Monday 26th March 2018 at 7:30 P.M. (ET/PT).

The 40-year-old entertainer is also branching out in print, with his first children's book, Elbow Grease, about an undersized monster truck with big determination. It is set for release in October 2018.

He talked with The Associated Press about his abiding love for children.

AP: What's it like working with Make-A-Wish?

Cena: I try to put myself in that perspective of if I had one thing to wish for, where would I fall on that list? I don't know exactly if I'd be in my top 100. So for me to be the name of like, 'I would like to hang out with this person for the day,' that's a pretty strong statement... It really is pretty magical when they get a really intimate experience with the individual and then they get to go see them be a superhero (in a WWE performance). I'll do that as long as I can, as long as they're asking me to do it.

AP: Why do you think you connect so much to kids?

Cena: One, I just have nonstop energy. I love energy and I love excitement, and I think kids have the same. They have such a lust for life, such an honest and genuine attack on every day. And their responses, too, their emotions: They don't hide how they feel. You can tell when a child is embarrassed. You can tell when they're excited. You can tell when they're happy, and you can tell when something you do makes them happy.... I love that honesty. I think that's really what connects me to young people, is they're not trying to shade you with anything. They'll give it to you straight.

AP: What can you say about your new children's book?

Cena: It takes from the activity I had with my brothers growing up in a family of five boys: a lot of roughhousing, a lot of harassment — and I mean that in a brotherly way — a lot of constant sizing each other up. But at the same time it's about the values that it's taken me four decades on this planet to learn, like don't be afraid to try something new, because if you don't try anything new, you'll never learn anything. Don't be afraid to go out of your comfort zone. Never take someone else's estimation of, 'You're not good enough' or 'You're not big enough' as final, just use it as motivation to try to keep pushing forward... So this little 18, 19-page book kind of gives all of those lessons at once, and I'm very, very proud of it.

AP: You're playing a dad with a teenage daughter in the new film Blockers, opening April 6. How was it to express such vulnerability onscreen?

Cena: I think there's a certain amount of intrigue in like, well what does a big guy really, really act like? Are they really that jaded and hard-edged, or are they actually human beings? I'm a human being, I really am. I'm much more of a softie than I am Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry. So any chance I get to do something like I'm doing in Blockers, where the guy is just a fit guy but he's a stay-at-home dad... I don't mind being vulnerable, I don't mind showing that because it develops plot of story, it develops sympathy, and you genuinely feel like I can relate to this person, even though it's this big guy who I have no connection with.

AP: How have you been able to find such purpose in your work?

Cena: I've swung and missed so many times, I'm glad nobody is keeping track except me. I think with failure comes embarrassment and comes humility. A lot of the reason we spend valuable minutes wandering away from purpose is because we're always afraid about what people will say and what people will think... I stopped caring about what other people thought and started caring about, like, what am I going to do that's going to make my life happy and make my life effective? ...Maybe that's why I'm trying all this crazy stuff: doing comedy, doing a little bit of acting, reading the news, hosting some TV shows, doing animated stuff, doing WWE still. It's because those things make me happy and I'm not worried about — I feel confident in the performance I've given. I just try to do my best.

eOne Appoints Alpha Group As Master Toy Partner For 'Peppa Pig' in China

Entertainment One (eOne) has appointed Alpha Group as master toy partner for Peppa Pig in China.


Under the new deal, the firm will introduce an extensive new toy line in 2018 that will continue to fuel the brand’s accelerating growth in the market.

The licensing program for China now counts more than 45 partners and continues to expand, with apparel, publishing, digital and confectionery categories all reporting strong sales. In addition, three sets of Peppa Pig-branded and animated emojis have been downloaded more than 20 million times. Live events and immersive fan experiences are also a key priority for eOne in China. September 2018 will see the opening of Merlin Entertainments’ first Peppa Pig attraction in Shanghai. A new deal was signed with Happy Kids Cultural Development for a Peppa Pig stage show that will tour the country over the next three years. A number of branded pop-up and mall events are also in the pipeline.

eOne's hit television series made a strong broadcast debut in China in June 2015 on national broadcaster, CCTV and is now available on multiple leading VOD platforms including Youku, IQIYi and Tencent, where the series has accumulated over 45 billion cumulative views.

As one of China’s leading toy manufacturers, plans are underway for Alpha Group to launch a new core toy range including play-sets, figurines and role play which will debut in the fourth quarter of 2018. As part of its strategy, Alpha plans to offer multiple price points across the range to give consumers more choice and value for money.

To manage this rapid growth, eOne has expanded it local team in the company’s Hong Kong office and has recently appointed Jennifer Pang as licensing director, Leo Tsoi as Hardgoods Manager, Joyce Lauw as director of product development and Debra Ng as Vice President (VP) of marketing.

Andrew Carley, the Executive Vice President (EVP) of global licensing for eOne Family & Brands, commented, “Alpha’s leading position in the Chinese market, in addition to its industrial chain platform and diverse operational IP experience, will contribute greatly to the reach of Peppa Pig across a wider consumer spectrum and we’re delighted to have them on board.”

eOne’s proactive efforts to protect its IP from piracy are ongoing and in 2017 the licensor removed over 80,000 online marketplace listings across leading e-commerce platforms covering 5 continents, as well as seizing approximately 1.5 million physical goods globally. eOne and Alpha will continue to collaborate with Chinese authorities to carry out an extensive anti-counterfeiting programme to reduce and deter infringement of its brands.

Alpha Group, for its part, recently struck a deal with Nickelodeon to serve as master toy partner for SpongeBob SquarePants. The toyco’s upcoming line will include toys, collectibles, plush and novelties, and is set to debut in 2019. DHX Brands has also appointed Alpha Group as its global toy licensee, excluding Asia, for Massive Monster Mayhem, its action-packed sci-fi competition series that airs on Nickelodeon and Nicktoons channels worldwide.

How Nickelodeon Casts Social Influencers

The science behind the search for the Nickelodeon's 2018 Kids’ Choice Awards influencer talent.


Finding the right social influencer to promote a brand is a lot like online dating - you have to sort through lots of profiles to find the perfect match, reveals V by Viacom.

So when Nickelodeon’s social activation team casts influencers to promote the Kids’ Choice Awards and its sponsors, there are lots of considerations. From advertiser goals and the target demographic, to tone of the campaign and size of the audience.

“It’s a bit of art and a bit of science,” says Tim McCormack, Nickelodeon’s vice president of social activation.

Finding an influencer isn’t a matter of hiring the person with the most followers. It’s choosing the ones that appeal to a brand’s intended demographic. They also can’t work with a competitor. “Influencer marketing is its own discipline. It has to be collaborative—a merging of content along with business,” says Evy Wilkins, vice president of account based marketing at Traackr, an influencer management platform.

Influencers hired by Nickelodeon have two things in common: They are family-friendly and on-brand. The influencers hired for this year’s KCAs (which air on Saturday, March 24) have millions of subscribers on their social channels but they each attract slightly different audiences: the Slyfox family posts uplifting videos featuring parents Hannah and Andrew and their kids Jaedyn and Caspian, while Devin Graham a.k.a, Devinsupertramp, is an extreme sports enthusiast who records himself bungee jumping and barefoot waterskiing. The former Dance Moms reality star-turned-Nickelodeon talent, JoJo Siwa will also post to her more than 21 million fans.

Social influencers are known for their ability to attract the trust and attention of an organic audience on social media. Some document their lives, being sure to plug the brands of clothing they wear or the restaurants they frequent, while others film themselves unwrapping toys or testing video games. The most popular influencers have millions of followers—who comment frequently and buy the products mentioned. Companies realized they could hire influencers to promote their products and an industry was born. Viacom recently purchased influencer marketing firm Whosay in an effort to bolster social influencer marketing across brands.

“It’s been in the last five years that brands are catching on to the power of influencers,” says Bryn Caruso, vice president of sales at Julius an influencer discovery, management, and analytics platform. “It’s still in its infancy.”

An entertaining ideal

Nickelodeon has also worked with the Eh Bees for the KCAs. They’re a family of four—who refer to themselves as Mama Bee, Papa Bee and Mr. and Miss Monkey—that rose to fame by posting zany videos on Vine and grew their audience to more than 20 million followers across their social channels.

Leading up to the KCAs in 2016, they posted a video—viewed more than 620,000 times—of their kids excitedly opening an invitation to attend the L.A. show. The campaign was also for Go-GURT, so they incorporated the Yoplait brand into a post seamlessly. After the kids opened the invitation, their father says, “Thanks so much to Nickelodeon and Go-GURT. We are going to the KCAs on March 12.”

The video asked subscribers to vote for the outfits Mama Bee and Miss Monkey should wear, and another featured them getting their hair and makeup done. Think the Kardashians, for the Nickelodeon set.

“Our advertisers love them,” says McCormack. “They’re funny, entertaining and playful at the same time.”

They are also brand-safe. Nickelodeon uses Julius to perform background checks. Before putting them in the database, Julius’ research team analyzes influencers social channels for a year and can go back as far as five years. Nickelodeon wants to ensure influencers are representing themselves accurately and that their content and audience comments are appropriate.

As Nickelodeon’s director of social talent, Katharine Santeiro casts influencers and is the intermediary between them and the client. It’s a collaborative process, with Santeiro giving the influencers creative freedom while providing enough direction to achieve a client’s goals. It’s a delicate balance.

“It can be a hand-holding process,” Santeiro says. “Clients may want to dictate what the Eh Bee family is going to create, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to look and feel like their other content and therefore it might not resonate with their fans.”

High engagement, powerful exposure

Nickelodeon’s ad sales department began informally offering influencer videos as part of custom ad campaigns about three years ago and added as a formal product for advertisers a year later. The videos caught on because the fans that comprise Nickelodeon’s audience are vocal and enjoy the interactive relationship, McCormack says. There are additional metrics that are reported, such as whether a viewer clicked or commented and the length of time spent watching a video.

From a technical standpoint, marketers get an engagement rate (likes, comments or shares) by dividing the number of actions taken by the influencer’s number of followers.

“The rule of thumb is that a 1 or 2% view rate is decent,” says Wilkins.

“Brands that are precious about their own narratives are not strong candidates for influencer marketing,” says Murray Legg, CEO of Webfluential, an influencer marketing firm.

As for this year’s influencers, the content they produce will promote the KCAs and sponsors Toyota and the Warner Bros. animated movie Smallfoot. The day before the awards, there will be an event at Hollywood & Highland, a shopping and entertainment complex in L.A., where a green slime-esque decor will wrap a Toyota. Jojo Siwa will host a game show that the Slyfox family will play and the whole thing will be streamed live on Nickelodeon’s Instagram and Facebook.

For WB’s Smallfoot, Nick and Devinsupertramp are creating content featuring a supersized snowball fight for his YouTube channel. He will also be attending the KCAs where he’ll walk the Orange Carpet where he’ll share his experiences with fans on Instagram and Facebook.

It’s this subtle exposure to brands that’s so powerful. “When an influencer does a post, you see 16 times the engagement rate than when the brand does it,” says Julius’ Caruso. “That’s the dynamic of advertising. You’re more likely to buy into something if you don’t feel like you’re being sold.”

Viacom Benelux and M7 Group Extend Benelux Partnership; Nickelodeon Benelux to Broadcast 24/7 on Canal Digitaal and TV Vlaanderen

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Benelux and European pay TV provider M7 Group have inked an agreement for the further extension of their partnership in the Benelux market.


Under the new agreement, Nickelodeon and Spike will launch as 24/7 channels at Canal Digitaal and TV Vlaanderen.

Subscribers of M7 Group’s pay TV platforms Canal Digitaal, Online.nl and TV Vlaanderen will continue to receive Viacom channels Nick Jr., MTV Music, VH1 en VH1 Classic, Comedy Central (only Netherlands), MTV NL and Nickelodeon/Spike.

As part of the agreement, Viacom Benelux will use M7 satellite capacity on the Astra 23.5 East position for the distribution of MTV NL, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and Spike, while also having the option to use the satellite capacity for distributing the channels to third party operators in the Benelux market. For this purpose, M7 Platform Services will provide the necessary technical facilities.

Bram Husken, Vice President (VP) Content Distribution Benelux: ‘We are quite happy with the further strengthening of our partnership with M7 Group, allowing also Canal Digitaal and TV VLAANDEREN subscribers to enjoy Spike and Nickelodeon as 24/7 channels soon, while also being part of M7’s growing IPTV business.”

The news follows Nickelodeon Benelux and Spike Benelux becoming 24/7 services on the cable television service Ziggo in the Netherlands in December 2016.

Viacom and satellite TV provider M7 announced a new carriage agreement for the Benelux. M7's Dutch and Belgian providers Canal Digitaal, Online.nl and TV Vlaanderen will increase the Viacom channels Nickelodeon and Spike to 24 hours a day as well as continue to carry the channels Nick Jr, MTV Music, VH1, VH1 Classic, Comedy Central and MTV NL.

Viacom will distribute the channels over the Astra satellite at 23.5 degrees East and can also use the capacity for reaching other TV providers in the region. M7 Platform Services will provide the necessary technical services. The new channel configuration will be added automatically for subscribers.
