ECHL Ice Hockey Teams Battle In SpongeBob SquarePants And Patrick Star Jerseys
Over the weekend, SpongeBob SquarePants defeated his ol' buddy Patrick, 5-2, in a high-stakes hockey game.
...Wait, that can't be right.
Actually, what happened -- and was immortalized on social media, just as you might expect -- is that the ECHL's Indianapolis Fuel and Cincinnati Cyclones took to the ice for a Nickelodeon-themed night on Friday, March 9, decked out in SpongeBob-themed attire.
The SpongeBob-wearing Fuel defeated the Patrick-wearing Cyclones, and Twitter rejoiced.
The ECHL is a mid-level professional ice hockey league based in Princeton, New Jersey, with teams scattered across the United States and one franchise in Canada. It is a tier below the American Hockey League. The League was founded in 1988 and has grown steadily since.
Themed nights like this one are not uncommon for regional sports teams as a way to draw in casual fans who might not otherwise shell out the money for a ticket. Such events are often locally-themed, but things like '90s Nickelodeon Nights, superhero nights and Star Wars nights have started to draw crowds, and it seems to be easier for smaller markets and lower-tier leagues to get the OK from corporate owners for such licenses than it would be for the NHL or NFL to attempt the same.
SpongeBob SquarePants is one of Nickelodeon's longest-running series. It debuted in 1999 and has spawned two feature films, theme park attractions, comic books, music, animated shorts, and more. The property has even inspired a critically acclaimed Broadway show, and last fall, took park in Macy's annual Thanksgiving Day festivities.
SpongeBob SquarePants has been renewed through to at least the show's twelfth season, will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2019, and will also feature in his third movie, which is slated to premiere on July 31, 2020, under Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Pictures!

UK: Channel 5's Milkshake! To Tackle Healthy Eating With New Shows And Digital Content
New content highlighting healthy eating is set to debut over the Easter break.
Channel 5's popular Milkshake! programming block is looking to whip up audiences this Easter with the launch of two new shows and a program of short-form digital content serving the healthier family lifestyle trend.
Starting Monday 2nd April 2018, Milkshake! Monkey Bananas About Food will explore where food comes from, alongside CG animated show, Shane the Chef (voiced by Being Human's Russell Tovey) which will bring heartwarming foodie adventures to screens.
Supported by the British Dietetic Association, Shane the Chef is a 52 x 11’ pre-school animation series produced by Hoho Entertainment. Created by Andrew Wildman and Simon Jowett, Shane the Chef aims to enthuse young children and carers with a love of fresh, healthy food and cooking. It is the first ever animated UK commission to focus on healthy eating for kids. A recent study from the British Nutrition Foundation found that a wide percentage of children don't know where basic foods come from, highlighting the need for greater education on the subject.
“With nearly one in ten children already obese by age five, steps to encourage a healthier relationship with food in the pre-school years are urgently needed," said Dr. Frankie Philips from The British Nutrition Foundation.
"Helping children learn about food and simple cooking could be one key step in encouraging awareness about ingredients and confidence in preparing a wide range of healthy foods."
Commenting on Shane the Chef, Russell Tovey said, “Shane the Chef is a celebration of food, where it comes from and what you can do with it in the kitchen. Getting children to understand healthy eating at an early age is so important. There is definitely a gap in the market for a preschool animation series that addresses this.”
Preschoolers and families will be able to further immerse themselves in the world of Shane the Chef and Milkshake Monkey through a range of activities on digital platforms including tips on how to prepare food and cook recipes from the shows in an age-appropriate way. Internet animation sensation Weebl has been commissioned to create 45-second music videos on healthy food items tied to Bananas About Food such as eggs which will run on the Milkshake! website and YouTube channels.
“Shane the Chef is a delicious mix of colourful characters," commented Alison Bakunowich, Senior Vice President (SVP) and General Manager (GM) for Nickelodeon UK and Milkshake. "Each episode will get kids excited about food and encourage them to eat balanced diets. Coupled with new Milkshake! Monkey content we are aiming to passionately show, like Shane, that ‘Fresh really is best' in an entertaining way."

Nick@Nite USA will host the Nickelodeon network premiere of the action-packed blockbuster movie Spy Kids: All the Time in the World (2011) on Thursday 22nd March 2018 at 8:00 P.M. (ET/PT)! Spy Kids: All the Time in the World stars Jessica Alba as a retired spy who has it all: married to a famous spy-hunting television reporter, with a new baby and intelligent twin step kids!
Marissa Cortez Wilson (Alba) is a retired spy who keeps that identity hidden from her clueless husband (Joel McHale, Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return) and whip-smart twin stepchildren, Rebecca (Rowan Blanchard, The Goldbergs) and Cecil (Mason Cook, The Goldbergs, Victorious). For the first time in Malaysia, fans can meet, greet and have their photos taken with Nick Jr.'s twin genies-in-training Shimmer & Shine at the concourse from 16 – 18 March at at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm, and take part in a wide variety of child-friendly activities and fun workshops held throughout the month.

Daniella Perkins Has Something to Say — And You'll Want to Listen
The sword-wielding star of Knight Squad is about to make it big.
Daniella Perkins is a totally typical teen off-screen: She loves hanging out with her friends, goofing off with her sister, and creating #content for social media — but on Nickelodeon's latest comedy Knight Squad, she plays a not-so-typical princess. The show premiered February 24, just in time for her to attend Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards this year (where she’ll be doing her very best to get slimed).
We chatted with Dani about her killer new role, what it means to her to be a mixed-race actress, and how she handled intense sword fighting training sessions. Read on for Dani’s awesome advice, and keep an eye out for her on the Orange Carpet on Saturday, March 24.
How did you get your start in acting?
I’ve always been very interested in acting. When I was little, I’d be in plays and memorize everyone's lines. I was so infatuated with everything that was going on. But I didn’t know I wanted to act [professionally] until I was about 13 or 14. I asked my mom if I could pursue it, and she was like, "okay!" So I got homeschooled, and I’d look up agencies all the time. I was very determined; the most determined 14 year old ever.
What's it been like to play Ciara, a princess who’s also training to be a knight.
It’s honestly a dream come true. I have all these amazing gowns that the costume and wardrobe people design for me to wear, and I get to be a mixed-race princess — that’s something that you hardly ever see [on TV]. It’s a lot of responsibility, but I feel so grateful for it.
That's so empowering for young girls to see. How does that feel?
Growing up, I saw very few people who looked like me on TV, so with this role, I get to be a person that young people — especially if they’re black or mixed — look up to. That, and the fact that I get to be a knight and a princess, shows girls that they can do anything. It’s just great to see a girl in charge and have power.

Daniella Perkins Has Something to Say — And You'll Want to Listen
The sword-wielding star of Knight Squad is about to make it big.
Daniella Perkins is a totally typical teen off-screen: She loves hanging out with her friends, goofing off with her sister, and creating #content for social media — but on Nickelodeon's latest comedy Knight Squad, she plays a not-so-typical princess. The show premiered February 24, just in time for her to attend Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards this year (where she’ll be doing her very best to get slimed).
We chatted with Dani about her killer new role, what it means to her to be a mixed-race actress, and how she handled intense sword fighting training sessions. Read on for Dani’s awesome advice, and keep an eye out for her on the Orange Carpet on Saturday, March 24.
How did you get your start in acting?
I’ve always been very interested in acting. When I was little, I’d be in plays and memorize everyone's lines. I was so infatuated with everything that was going on. But I didn’t know I wanted to act [professionally] until I was about 13 or 14. I asked my mom if I could pursue it, and she was like, "okay!" So I got homeschooled, and I’d look up agencies all the time. I was very determined; the most determined 14 year old ever.
What's it been like to play Ciara, a princess who’s also training to be a knight.
It’s honestly a dream come true. I have all these amazing gowns that the costume and wardrobe people design for me to wear, and I get to be a mixed-race princess — that’s something that you hardly ever see [on TV]. It’s a lot of responsibility, but I feel so grateful for it.
That's so empowering for young girls to see. How does that feel?
Growing up, I saw very few people who looked like me on TV, so with this role, I get to be a person that young people — especially if they’re black or mixed — look up to. That, and the fact that I get to be a knight and a princess, shows girls that they can do anything. It’s just great to see a girl in charge and have power.
Nickelodeon Confirms That John Cena Won't Be Hosting It's 'Blue's Clues' Revival
His 'audition' at last week’s upfront went viral, but it was just a joke for buyers
During Nickelodeon's 2018 upfront event last Tuesday, Nickelodeon Group president Cyma Zarghami emceed most of the proceedings, but John Cena spent almost as much time in front of the audience of advertisers, buyers and Viacom staffers. The WWE superstar and actor made several trips onstage at New York’s Palace Theatre, the home of the new hit SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical, to talk about all of the projects he has in the works for the company.

But none of his appearances was more amusing than when Cena strode onstage after Pam Kaufman, Nickelodeon’s Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) and President of consumer products, announced that the network would be reviving one of its most popular shows, Blue’s Clues, for a new generation of preschoolers. The series—which ended its original run in 2006—will feature a new, live-action host and CG animation.
Cena donned the show's iconic green-striped rugby shirt worn by previous hosts Steve Burns and Donovan Patton, and jokingly said he was auditioning for the role, since he was already doing so many Nickelodeon shows.
As part of my upfront coverage, AdWeek reporter Jason Lynch tweeted a picture of Cena onstage in his Blue’s Clues garb:
That tweet went viral, sparking a wave of stories speculating that the audition was real, and that Cena indeed was in consideration for the hosting job. The wrestler contributed to the speculation himself by Instagramming a caption-less Blue’s Clues photo.
The story received new life on Tuesday, when original Blue’s Clues host Steve Burns spoke to TMZ, and said that if Cena was indeed interested in the gig, “he and I should wrestle for it. I’m calling you out, Cena!”
Nickelodeon then tried to play peacemaker on its Twitter feed:

(Nickelodeon is seeking women and men of any ethnicity who can play 18-25 years old. Auditionees must be aged 18 or over.)

Viacom Networks Go Off-Air For 17 Minutes In Solidarity With Students Taking Part In National School Walkout Day

Viacom's networks, including Nickelodeon, MTV, BET and Comedy Central, suspended regular programming by going dark for 17 minutes at 10 a.m. in every time zone in support of National School Walkout day, a month to the day that 17 students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, were murdered by a gunman with a semiautomatic rifle.
Today’s nationwide walk-out kicked off with students in Eastern time zones leaving their classrooms at 10 a.m., and the wave of walk-outs followed the sun as 10 a.m. hit an estimated 3,000 schools across the nation. In Colorado, Columbine High School students staged their walk-out and observed 30 seconds of silence – one second for each of the dead at Parkland and their own school – sometime around mid-day.
In Washington D.C., thousands had gathered outside the White House and on Capitol Hill by late morning, with MSNBC cameras capturing moments like students swarming Bernie Sanders as he spoke through a bullhorn. Elizabeth Warren visited earlier, and other politicians will no doubt drop by as the day goes on.
“Viacom stands with all students as they participate in the national school walkout against gun violence,” read the stark, white-letters-on-black-background message that took the place of regular programming on Comedy Central, VH-1, MTV, BET, Logo, TV Land and other Viacom channels.
As Nickelodeon caters for a younger audience, the network displayed a more kid-friendly message: "In support of kids leading the way today, Nickelodeon will be off the air until 17 minutes past the hour."
“The next 17 minutes are dedicated to young people who are leading the fight against gun violence,” read a message on MTV before flashing photos of those who died in the Parkland shooting, whilst a live Periscope broadcast profiling some teens and young adults who were moved to act against gun violence was broadcast on the networks Twitter feed.
On a Viacom company blog, the company posted an explanation for its 17-minute black-out – one minute for each of the slain Parkland students – that reads, in part:
"Viacom and its brands have a long history of supporting young people’s movements around the world, and today the company is extending that tradition by leveraging its substantial multi-platform footprint to support these extraordinary individuals and amplify the reach and impact of their activism.
This series of efforts across MTV, BET, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, Comedy Central, TV Land, CMT and other properties will include partnerships with a coalition of organizations and students that are working to make America’s schools safer and reduce gun violence."
Viacom’s efforts also include a $500,000 donation from Shari Redstone, Vice Chair of Viacom’s Board, to the March For Our Lives movement. Viacom also plans to devote extensive on-air and digital coverage of the March 24 March For Our Lives demonstration in Washington, D.C., like having MTV and Comedy Central change the color of their logos to orange (for gun violence awareness) for the 10 days prior to the march, which organizers say they are expecting more than 500,000 attendees. BET (Black Entertainment Television) will be offering grants for youth activists who have “innovative ideas about addressing gun violence and mental health issues," while CMT plans to work with the country music industry to fight for gun safety.
Programs and Viacom channels planning special or continued coverage leading up to the march include The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, The Opposition w/ Jordan Klepper, Paramount Network and Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards, which airs March 24 and is expected to acknowledge the march in some way. Viacom also says The Daily Show with Trevor Noah "plans to continue its ongoing coverage of the growing anti-gun violence movement in the country."
Students are also taking over MTV’s social media accounts, including Twitter and Facebook, during the walkout.
“This generation continues to be the driving force for change,” said Marva Smalls, Viacom's Executive Vice President (EVP) of Global Inclusion. “With more than 17 young people dying from gun violence every single day, unfortunately, no community is safe.
"We believe it’s critical to support the inspiring efforts of our youth, who are literally fighting for their lives," Smalls continued. "Viacom also has a responsibility to our audiences to do everything we can to elevate the many brave and bold activists to help them extend the reach and impact of their voices in this important movement.”
Though some school districts reportedly have pledged disciplinary action against walking students, thousands of students participated in the protest with official blessing, including many students interviewed by MSNBC reporters as they walked. (Fox News Channel wasn’t covering, at least on a continuous or extensive basis; CNN had stopped covering non-stop by 11:30 a.m. ET).
Update: The National School Walkout was organized by the Women's March, and around 185,000 people across the country took part in it, alongside around 3,100 schools. The walkout is meant as a symbol to Congress about their inaction when it comes to gun violence that is becoming more prevalent in schools.

Talk about a party! The MOA's Nickelodeon Universe will celebrate its 10th Anniversary this Saturday with an all-day bash.
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - Nickelodeon Universe at the Mall of America is marking a huge milestone.
On Saturday, March 17th, the theme park will celebrate its 10th anniversary. The daylong free event will run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. MOA entertainment manager, Amelia English stopped by KARE 11 News at 11 to invite the public to share in the fun. As part of the proceedings Minnesota Viking’s Stefon Diggs will receive Nickelodeon Universe’s highest honor!
The first 1000 guests will get a special teenage mutant ninja turtle mask along with a special turtle meet-and-greet. Kids can also make their own slime. More than one thousand cupcakes will be handed out to the public.
There’s also a coloring sweepstakes and lots of fun prizes too. The sibling band, “Nunnabove”, performs live from noon to 1pm live in the rotunda.
The Mall of America amusement park features 27 rides and attractions themed after some of Nickelodeon’s biggest hits.

Talk about a party! The MOA's Nickelodeon Universe will celebrate its 10th Anniversary this Saturday with an all-day bash.
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - Nickelodeon Universe at the Mall of America is marking a huge milestone.
On Saturday, March 17th, the theme park will celebrate its 10th anniversary. The daylong free event will run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. MOA entertainment manager, Amelia English stopped by KARE 11 News at 11 to invite the public to share in the fun. As part of the proceedings Minnesota Viking’s Stefon Diggs will receive Nickelodeon Universe’s highest honor!
The first 1000 guests will get a special teenage mutant ninja turtle mask along with a special turtle meet-and-greet. Kids can also make their own slime. More than one thousand cupcakes will be handed out to the public.
There’s also a coloring sweepstakes and lots of fun prizes too. The sibling band, “Nunnabove”, performs live from noon to 1pm live in the rotunda.
The Mall of America amusement park features 27 rides and attractions themed after some of Nickelodeon’s biggest hits.

Update (2/23): IGN has confirmed that Nickelodeon will release the complete series of the networks hit animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender on Blu-ray this summer, and has unveiled a fantastic first look at the Blu-ray box set art, along with a list of all the special features fans can look forward to when Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Complete Series hits stores!

Nickelodeon had three seasons (or "books") for it, each subtitled "Water," "Earth," and "Fire," respectively. Each season had 20 or 21 episodes, and the voice cast included Zach Tyler, Mae Whitman, Jack DeSena, Dante Basco, Mako, Jessie Flower, and Dee Bradley Baker. The show inspired a theatrical film and a spinoff sequel, The Legend of Korra. Internationally, Avatar: The Last Airbender was titled Avatar: The Legend of Aang.
