How the Creators of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Made One of the Smartest Kids Shows Ever
'Avatar' and 'Korra' both explored mature themes like death, war, and depression.
While it’s not uncommon for shows ostensibly aimed at kids to tackle mature themes, few shows have ever done so with more intelligence and generosity than Avatar: The Last Airbender. The beloved Nickelodeon series (and its sequel The Legend of Korra) owed that clarity of vision to two men, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, who set out to craft epic stories that remained, at their core, deeply human. Throughout the run of both shows, the pair of showrunners injected narratives not only with real stakes, but with personal problems and personal decisions that helped children understand contingency, accountability, and how one thing leads to the next.
On Avatar, death was always in the cards; from the moment that Aang found out his destiny – to stop the Fire Nation from conquering the world – he believed that he had to kill Firelord Ozai. The series never shied away from the morbid nature of his quest, even using it to create some of The Last Airbender’s stickiest dilemmas. In “The Storm,” for instance, Aang runs away because he does not think that he can kill someone, even if it means stopping a war. He’s scared despite being all too familiar with the consequences of inaction. His personal narrative runs counter to the flow of the show and feels, because of the nature of DiMartino and Konietzko’s work, more important.
But the realities on the show were never just internal. Along the way to Avatar’s extremely grand finale, the Aang Gang also encountered genocide, collateral damage, corporal punishment, and war. And none of this could be written off to a one-dimensional evil. The Fire Nation, while at odds with the protagonist, is not assumed to be homogenous or purely malicious.
To get such a mature and consistent point of view across three seasons and 61 episodes, the creators of Avatar had to finesse what they would show without ever transparently retreating from a hard truth. Learning how to do this took time and doing it required a willingness to push back on the studio and on each other.
Fatherly spoke to both DiMartino and Konietzko about the process of making a truly smart and challenging show mainly geared towards children and that one thing that Nickelodeon wouldn’t let them put on kids television.
At what point in the creation process of Avatar did you realize that you could discuss mature topics in a way that kids would both understand and be intrigued by?
DiMartino: There wasn’t a specific revelatory moment. Mature topics like genocide, abuse, war, spirituality, and matters of life and death were baked into the concept of Avatar from the beginning. Bryan and I were always concerned with telling a complex story with serious themes, while at the same time ensuring the show remained fun, entertaining, and exciting to watch. I honestly don’t know how to write a story without delving into mature topics, since that is where I find meaning in a story. The longer I’ve been writing stories, both for TV and now in novels for young readers, I’m impressed by how those deeper themes resonate with kids. There’s a quote by Philip Pullman – author of The Golden Compass – that I always go back to: “There are some themes, some subjects, too large for adult fiction; they can only be dealt with adequately in a children’s book.”
Death was always a part of the Avatar universe – right down to the Avatar being reincarnated after death. Aang grapples with having to kill the Fire Lord for the entire series. Was there ever any hesitancy to focus on such a dark topic?
Konietzko: In a lot of entertainment for adults, death is depicted so frequently and casually that it loses any weight. On the contrary, in much of kids’ entertainment, it is often swept under the rug as if it doesn’t exist. Right off the bat, Mike and I felt strongly that in order for our series to be truly epic, there had to be high stakes — namely, death. But it was never in an effort to make some edgy, irreverent show. We tried to approach those subjects with care, and sought to find a balance in tones that would make the Avatar world deeper and richer, and serve the story as best we could.
What does the medium of animation allow you to do with regards to mature content that you couldn’t do in a live-action TV show or movie?
DiMartino: In a general sense, the animation makes it slightly more permissible to depict action or intense imagery. In a practical sense, we could show big battles and large-scale elemental effects that would be prohibitively expensive on a live-action TV show. We were constantly pushing the limits of what we could accomplish creatively with our budgets and schedules. Looking back, I think we were crazy for trying some of the things we did, but time after time, the artists and animators rose to the challenge, always surpassing my expectations of what was possible.
Was there anything that was rejected by the studio because it was just too dark for Nickelodeon?
Konietzko: Mike and I tried to police ourselves in terms of pulling back from things being too gratuitous throughout both productions. Even so, there were certainly still notes from the network, as there always are. On the original Avatar series, they were very hesitant for us to be explicit when a character died, or even having our characters say any variations of “die” or “kill” more than once in an episode.
Years later, on Korra, those restrictions were significantly looser, and that series as a whole was far more mature in its tone. However, we did butt heads with the network on the final scene of Korra, where we wanted to show a same-sex kiss. We lost that battle, but we’ve been able to continue that story in the Dark Horse comics Mike is writing. Korra and Asami (aka Korrasami) finally got their kiss.

In The Slime Light: Mark Kingston Talks Nickelodeon's Biggest IP's For 2018
Having been appointed Senior Vice President (SVP) of consumer products at Nickelodeon and Viacom as the studio is named number one for pre-school for another year, Mark Kingston can’t help but smile. ToyNews' Robert Hutchins talks PAW Patrol, Nella the Princess Knight and why the iconic green stuff is destined to be this year’s must-have product for the pre-school specialist. Check out his super interview below!
If you’ve never sat opposite Nickelodeon’s SVP of consumer products, Mark Kingston as he quietly asks you what you know about slime, have you ever really experienced London Toy Fair? Slime is certainly one of the hottest trends around, and Kingston is a font of knowledge on the topic.
But of course, he would be. Nickelodeon has, after all, been synonymous with slime for the last 30 years. It’s a concept that has adorned the Nickelodeon logo in some form for the most part of a generation and the Nickelodeon channel is not shy of the odd A-list celebrity getting an on-air sliming.
“We can certainly stake a claim to having invented the slime genre all that time ago,” says Kingston, sipping from a bottle that looked like it contained water, yet could have equally been a fresh brew of the green stuff itself. Recently appointed to the role of vice president of consumer products at Nickelodeon and Viacom, heading up licensing for all international markets outside of the US, Kingston really is the only man for the job; living, breathing and exuding the kind of energy and excitement Nickelodeon is so well known for.
And when he began to notice the trend for the oozy compound picking up in the toy space, it wasn’t long before he and the consumer products team around him realised the huge potential for the studio within it. From there, it wasn’t a long journey to reach the conclusion that the only firm up to the job was the long-term product partner, Sambro.
“Sambro is a key partner of ours and has worked across multiple categories with us,” says Kingston. “So we really wanted them to come on board and develop not just Slime compounds – which they have done exceptionally well – but to really encapsulate the essence of Nickelodeon Slime in products.”
Unsurprisingly, Sambro said yes and used London’s Toy Fair as the opportunity to showcase the first line of products, including Slime Guns and a raft of Slime- themed games.
“We have had a unanimous response to this new line,” explains Kingston. “Sambro has had a great London Toy Fair and this is a very good retail pick up, so we are very excited about this.”
Having worked extensively on a style guide for the iconic Nickelodeon Slime, both the studio and Sambro are looking to expand the franchise into new categories, as well as search new partners to bring the brand into clothing and accessories.
Slime, however, is but one string to the Nickelodeon bow. Currently, the firm is sitting rather pretty, dominating the pre-school space with the likes of PAW Patrol, Shimmer and Shine and the newly launched Nella the Princess Knight.
“Pre-school is on fire for us,” said Kingston. “Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. in particular, have become the owners of pre-school and when we look at our brand positioning at the moment, we dominate that space.
“PAW Patrol has been a phenomenal success for us, and as we move into the fifth year of the franchise, it is truly becoming an evergreen property for us and our partners. Spin Master has done an incredible job as co-production partner in making sure each episode weaves into different themes that then carry through into their toy range.”
Now the number one pre-school property in the UK for the second year running, the demand for PAW Patrol doesn’t appear to be easing up. In fact, the company was all but forced to launch a new live PAW Patrol show last year, "Pirate Adventure", supplementing "Race to the Rescue" and the surge in demand for more PAW Patrol, more of the time.
“Location-based experiences are big business for us in terms of our theme parks and PAW Patrol Live Race to the Rescue,” continues Kingston. “In fact, that show has been a sell-out in every single market it has been in. We now have a second PAW Patrol live show, "Pirate Adventure". It’s just launched in the US, so we have two live shows on at the moment globally.
More Nick: PAW Patrol Live! "The Great Pirate Adventure" Announces UK Tour Dates!
“There was too much demand for just one show to fill,” he adds. “Add to this the great new themes coming through with Ultimate Rescue at the end of the year, we see 2018 being another solid year of success for PAW Patrol.
“At the same time, we are seeing really positive trends coming through for Shimmer and Shine as we start now to capitalise on the great ratings we had last year and see sell-through at retail. Retailers are getting- ting really excited about it, just as much as they are about Nella the Princess Knight.”
With a product line led by Vivid, Nella the Princess Knight represents somewhat of a step into new territory for Nickelodeon, working with an international-led master toy licensing partner. However, it is a gamble that has certainly paid off for the studio who has already witnessed ‘unanimous positive reception across trade both in the UK and globally,’ to the range.
“The work Vivid has done on Nella the Princess Knight has been phenomenal. The company has really got under the DNA of Nella and the toy line is a range that really encompasses the role play and transformation of Nella into a Knight.”
From a pre-school perspective, Nickelodeon appears to have it sewn up. The firm boasts a confidence that comes with its top ranking position in the space, and, with two new launches in Top Wing and Sunny Day (Sunny Day recently premiered on Nick Jr. earlier this month, and Top Wing will hit screens in 2019), is certain of maintaining that strength in the years to come.
“Pre-school is incredibly competitive- one of the most in the toy industry,” continues Kingston. “But as long as you are staying true to the essence of what the show is and doing the literal translation for those products, you are going to stay ahead of the competition. We are proud of our position as number one in the pre-school space, but we have to work hard to maintain that position.”
For Kingston and the team, part of that hard work is keeping ahead of the latest trends among its biggest consumer base: kids. It’s with its keen eye for what children and tweens are engaging with today that Nickelodeon was able to secure the JoJo Siwa brand and bring it under the Nickelodeon banner.
Having begun her career appearing on hit US TV shows Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition and Dance Moms, and as a YouTube star, JoJo Siwa has since become the highly recognisable face of a number of Nickelodeon shows, including her own 30 min' show, JoJo Siwa: My World and a role in the upcoming Nickelodeon movie, Blurt.
On top of that, you may have noticed the emergence of the JoJo Siwa name across multiple new products in the toy space, too.
“JoJo Siwa has not only gone from strength to strength here in the UK, but it shows the flexibility of how Nickelodeon is prepared to work in a changing media landscape,” says Kingston.
Seamlessly, Nickelodeon has managed to weave the JoJo Siwa brand into traditional linear TV while staying true to the emphasis on social media, where she rose to fame and from which her fan base grew.
“It’s a tricky dynamic for everyone to be working through the ever-evolving media consumption. Audiences are consuming more content than they have ever consumed in the history of mankind, and really, TV has never had a better time than now.
“Meanwhile from a licensing perspective, JoJo has been a runaway success. We are delighted with both partners coming on board to take that risk with us, but also retailers supporting it as well. We see JoJo having a phenomenal year in 2018 and we are already working with her and her management team on the next iteration of JoJo and what it means for 2019 and beyond.”
So armed with a slate of new TV series, new partners on board and a new passion for the slimy stuff, it is with some confidence that both Kingston and Nickelodeon stride into 2018 and beyond.

Star Trek's Bones Gets Replaced by a T.U.F.F. Puppy's Scientist Puppy | Talkin’ Toons
You’ve got to be one tough puppy to make it in Starfleet Academy. So when Nerdist wanted to recreate a scene from J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek on their Alpha series Talkin’ Toons, they needed a voice actor, not a doctor! And who better to fill in for Bones than the creator of Nickelodeon’s T.U.F.F. Puppy, Butch Hartman!
Hartman, who also created The Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom, joined host Rob Paulsen to talk about his long career in animation, and the two also read the scene when Karl Urban’s Dr. Leonard McCoy first met Chris Pine’s James Kirk. Rob filled in for Kirk as his character Carl Wheezer from Jimmy Neutron, and Hartman read for Bones as T.U.F.F. Puppy's stuttering scientist Keswick, who was voiced by Jeff Bennett on the show.
Normally on Talkin’ Toons, guests read scenes in the style of characters they have voiced themselves, but since Hartman literally created the character and does such a good impression of him, they figured this would work just as well.
If you want to see the rest of this interview, along with all other episodes of Talkin’ Toons, you can only watch them at Nerdist's online Alpha community. It’s just one of our many great shows there, and if you’re not already signed up your first 30 days are free when you join.
What other character from Butch Hartman’s cartoons would you like to hear in the Academy? Fly into Nerdist's comments section and let them know!
