For the past decade or so, Power Rangers fans have been in a near constant state of "is the show cancelled?" From Operation Overdrive to the newest season, Super Ninja Steel, fans have continually wondered if the show would be ending. Well, those worries can be put to rest once again. In a post (now deleted) from Power Rangers casting director Iris Hampton, it seems a new season will be heading our way soon!
"We will begin casting soon for another amazing season of Power Rangers! Contact your agents and managers for details in mid-March. Would love to see great young talent proficient in martial arts, gymnastics, acrobatics, or dance."
Hampton has been involved with the show since the beloved Power Rangers In Space, so it is more than legit.
Previously in an interview with AucklandNZ we learned that Executive Producer Chip Lynn and the Saban team were, "starting to develop the next season" but this casting announcement is the first concrete move to a new season happening.
It should be noted that usually by this time in the past few years we've gotten the announcement of a new season or at least trademarks showing the new season's name. We haven't received any of those just yet, which was causing the latest round of worries from Power Rangers fans.
There's still no indication where or when this new season will air. The partnership Saban has with Nickelodeon hasn't been extended at the time of posting, so it's up in the air what network the season could end up on. There's also zero confirmation on what Super Sentai season the new season will take footage from, although there are two real options - there are two recent seasons that have yet to be adapted into a Power Rangers show.
The most likely option for Saban is Uchu Sentai Kyuranger, which is the 41st season of the long-running show. The show is heavily favored due to its space theme and the sheer number of Rangers. The show would be the first to use a space theme since Power Rangers Lost Galaxy, and would also serve as a nice contrast to the current Super Ninja Steel. It also features 12 Rangers, which translates into all kinds of toy opportunities. Bandai America also has direct input on the designs for the series.
Plus, it was received really well in Japan, and the premise should go over well internationally too, as it deals with alien invaders taking over the world, awakening nine of the most powerful heroes to save it.
If Saban goes another route, it will likely go with Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger, the 40th season. Zyuohger has an animal theme, with a few video game elements thrown in for good measure. The show features around 9 Rangers, and the premise could go over well, but it isn't as surefire a premise as Kyuranger.
It will be interesting to see which way Saban goes.

UK - Nickelodeon takes rivalry to a whole new dimension in the brand-new, sci-fi competition series Massive Monster Mayhem (20 half-hour episodes), premiering Monday 26th February 2018 at 6:00pm on Nicktoons UK & Ireland. Co-created by Artur Spigel (founder of 7ate9 Entertainment) and Michael Chaves, and produced by DHX Media, the CGI-animated series features live-action gameplay by real-life kids who compete in futuristic athletic challenges for a chance to win prizes and save the Earth from total destruction. Massive Monster Mayhem will air weekdays at 6:00pm on Nicktoons UK & Eire, with encores airing weekends at 10:30am and 7:30pm.
In each episode of Massive Monster Mayhem, three real-life kid heroes are placed in a fictional alternate universe to compete in a gauntlet of intergalactic challenges in order to become Earth’s champion. Contestants are eliminated through a series of three rounds, which culminate when the last player standing faces off against one of overlord Master Mayhem’s monsters to save the planet. Each action-packed episode features two hosts who provide fun commentary during gameplay and non-stop hijinks from Master Mayhem and his monsters. Massive Monster Mayhem originally launched on Nicktoons in the U.S. in October 2017, garnering solid ratings among the network’s audience. Here's Our First Look At The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Kicking Shell In 'Injustice 2'
Booyakasha! Everyone’s favorite mutated reptiles are making their way to Injustice 2 next week, dude! Warner Bros and NetherRealm Studios have officially released the gameplay trailer showcasing the latest addition to the DC-centric fighting game: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Unlike the previous teaser trailer, this new video shows us exactly how the four heroes in a half shell fight, and it’s totally tubular! In it, we see a showcase of each of the four warriors: Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo, and Raphael.
The official YouTube channel for Injustice 2 also confirmed that the Turtles went on a one-way trip to DC’s multiverse following a battle with Krang. And while this isn’t the TMNT’s world, they’re going to make themselves right at home alongside some of the most iconic heroes and villains in comics. In this trailer, the Turtles take turns wailing on the bad guys while each of the four brothers gets his moment in the spotlight.
As detailed in today’s press release, players can choose which turtle to play as through the game’s gear customization system. By equipping swords, a bo staff, nunchucks, or sais, users can change their character loadout and play as Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael. If you select a loadout in which you equipped swords, you'll control Leo in battle. One with a staff will be Donnie, and so on. Each character will each play as their own distinct characters, complete with unique move sets, character powers and special moves. Since loadouts are unavailable in online and tournament modes, players can select each individual brother from the character select screen.
The video also shows how other members of the turtles gang fly in to finish attacks and extend combos by way of an assist. Michelangelo can kick his skateboard across the screen. Donatello, who wields a enticing bo staff, has longer reach than the other turtles. Leonardo can chuck ninja stars, whereas Raphael looks like he's mostly about being up close and personal. Raphael’s super move features contributions from all three of his brothers for a large team shellshock attack, with each doing damage to the enemy with their signature weapons before shouting "Shell Shock!" and smashing their shells into the airborne opponent. It also appears that each of the Turtles summon their brothers to perform assist attacks during the course of a match. That may add another dimension of strategy to the game, and fans are eager to see more of the Turtles in play. Also, it is thought that Raphael’s victory screen is a Easter egg paying homage to Mortal Kombat‘s infamous “toasty!” meme.
Expect the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to kick shell on Tuesday, February 13 for players who own the Injustice 2 Ultimate Edition, Injustice 2 Ultimate Pack or Fighter Pack #3. They will become available as standalone DLC starting on Tuesday, February 20 from the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Steam, or Microsoft Store for $9.99 USD; £11.9 GBP.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have previously shared countless games with DC Comics characters so it’s a lot of fun to see them brought together like this. This almost feels like a natural extension of the recent Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics. In those books, the Turtles also fight Batman and other DC characters. From the sneak-peeks, it looks like the NetherRealm team went with Steve Barron’s designs featured in the very first live-action TMNT movie. This makes some kind of sense given how those designs blend nicely with the art style of Injustice 2.

Viacom Closes Viacom Next VR Studio
Viacom has shut down Viacom Next, its emerging entertainment technology group that was best known for producing virtual reality (VR) experiences like Tyler Hurd’s interactive music video “Chocolate.” The closure comes as Viacom laid off close to 100 employees across multiple divisions as part of a cost-cutting move.
Some Viacom Next staffers will lose their job as part of the closure while others may get a chance to work within other parts of the company, according to a spokesperson, who sent Variety the following statement:

This is the latest in a string of high-profile VR studio closures over the past few months. Back in January it was reported that VR production studio Future Lighthouse was shutting down and last October "EVE: Valkyrie" developer CCP Games ended its work in VR.
The closure of Viacom Next is not thought to affect the Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab, Nickelodeon's technology R&D lab which spearheads long-range research and development efforts around new technologies for the network and its audience.

Viacom Acquires VidCon
It’s official: Viacom has announced the acquisition VidCon, host of the world’s biggest conference dedicated to YouTube and online video.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. It was first reported on Monday that Viacom was near a deal to acquire the confab, which began in 2010. UTA, which represents VidCon, brokered the deal with Viacom. UTA will continue to rep VidCon, overseeing sponsorship sales globally and helping to expand the conference internationally.
The move is part of Viacom’s efforts to expand beyond its TV legacy into next-generation entertainment platforms, as well as to expand the media conglomerate’s live-events business. The acquisition also raises the prospect of VidCon coverage and related programming being carried on Viacom’s cable nets, which include Nickelodeon and MTV. In recent years, Nickelodeon has had a sizeable presence sizable presence on the show floor at VidCon events.
VidCon was founded by YouTube’s popular Vlogbrothers, John and Hank Green. Each year, VidCon attracts thousands of attendees to the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California for four days of events, all aimed at creators, fans, and executives within the online video world. Eight years after it was founded by Vlogbrothers co-hosts Hank and John Green, VidCon is the preeminent event of its kind, at least within its own industry; In 2017, VidCon’s flagship event in Anaheim attracted more than 30,000 attendees, 80 sponsors, and 45 exhibitors.
“VidCon has become the foremost gathering place for the passionate online video community, and the access to talent, experts and education that VidCon provides for attendees is unparalleled,” said Jason Jordan, Viacom’s Executive Vice President (EVP) of multiplatform strategy and operations, said in announcing the pact.
The explosion of online video content internationally has prompted organizers to introduce editions in Amsterdam and Australia. VidCon Europe will take place March 22-24 in Amsterdam and VidCom Australia will take place Sept. 1-2 in Melbourne. With the acquisition, Viacom sees an opportunity to expand the conference franchise footprint to new international and domestic markets.
Under the deal, VidCon will remain a standalone subsidiary operating independently, according to Viacom. VidCon will continue to be led by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jim Louderback and remain in its current offices in Montana. Co-founder Hank Green will continue be involved and work closely with the team.
“I’m so happy that we found such a strong, successful, and progressive company to give our team the stability and resources needed to make bold moves at home and grow what we’re doing internationally,” Hank Green said in a statement, adding that Viacom “has decades of expertise creating incredible live events for fans.”
Over the past year, Viacom has been ratcheting up its focus on social media and internet video — an attempt to reach Gen Z and millennial audiences, demos that have been at the core of its TV properties.
VidCon will continue to be based in Green’s home state of Montana. Jim Louderback, who ascended to the company’s CEO position last year, will retain his role after the deal is finalized. UTA, which has been helping VidCon from a strategic and sponsorship sales standpoint since 2012, will also maintain its role post the acquisition.
The financial terms of Viacom’s acquisition have not been shared publicly at this time.
