'SpongeBob' Artist Arielle Phillips And Nickelodeon Animation Pay Tribute To David Bowie On Second Anniversary Of The Musicians Death
On Sunday 10th January 2016, two days after his 69th birthday and the release of the album Blackstar, the world lost music legend David Bowie to liver cancer. Among his lengthy resume, David worked on two SpongeBob SquarePants projects for Nickelodeon: he voiced Lord Royal Highness in the SpongeBob SquarePants special "Atlantis SquarePantis", and contributed the song "No Control" to Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical.
On the anniversary of the legendary musicians death, SpongeBob SquarePants artist Arielle Phillips and Nickelodeon Animation have unveiled a special tribute to the Starman: a drawing featuring Squidward Tentacles as David's glam rock alter ego Ziggy Stardust. In his own words, “Tomorrow belongs to those who can hear it coming”:

MTV Networks Latin America Wins Miami-Dade County's First Filming Grant For Nickelodeon's 'I Am Frankie' Season 2
Florida - The first production to gain funding under Miami-Dade County’s new film incentive program is a 20-episode MTV Networks Latin America television series continuation. The incentives are geared to fill a gap left when Florida dropped its own film incentives system, a change that sent filming activity and employment in the state into a tailspin.
County commissioners acting on a committee’s recommendation approved the maximum incentive, $100,000, under the new county program created last July to Nickelodeon's I Am Frankie Season 2.
The commission’s Economic Development and Tourism Committee recommended the grant award on Thursday, December 14, 2017 and commissioners in a late addition to their agenda approved the grant five days later.
A second MTV Networks Latin America series, 75 one-hour episodes of Club 57, was also recommended for approval and was to have come before the same county committee in December but before the meeting withdrew its application.
For the second season of I Am Frankie, the network, a subsidiary of Viacom, is projecting 50 production days for the half-hour show with a total expenditure of $5.4 million. The network proposes to produce 80% of the productions in Miami and employ 96 county residents, beginning this month, with principal photography starting Monday, March 12.
The show, Deputy Mayor Jack Osterholt told commissioners via memo, centers on Frankie Gaines, who looks perfectly normal “but harbors a big secret: She functions as a high-tech computer, complete with internet access, extensive memory and more.”
“There’s a lot of interest out there for 2018, especially from independent film producers. We urge them to apply” for the incentive program, county Office of Film and Entertainment chief Sandy Lighterman told Miami Today before the grant award.
Citing the loss of millions in revenues in the county “in the absence of state incentives,” Commissioner Sally Heyman proposed the program in June.
To be eligible, companies must spend at least $1 million, film at least 70% of the production here, and hire at least 80% of vendors and contractors locally to receive a tax rebate not to exceed $100,000 per production.
Each year between 2010 and 2016, when Florida had a strong incentive program, film, television, digital media and other productions spent $160 million to $406 million in Miami-Dade, Ms. Heyman’s ordinance said. But after refusing to add new funding to the incentive program for four consecutive years, the state Legislature allowed it to end in 2016.
The grant application for I Am Frankie season two said approval of the tax rebate would be a determining factor in whether to film here or elsewhere. It listed Los Angeles and Atlanta as competitors for the project. In their application, MTV Networks Latin America also said that I Am Frankie season two would be photographed in various locations around Miami-Dade County, if successful.
In I Am Frankie Season 2, Frankie (Alex Hook) finally is fitting in and exploring what it means to be human with the help of her best friend, Dayton (Nicole Alyse Nelson). Things quickly become complicated when a new android arrives at Sepulveda High and the world learns that androids exist. And when WARPA comes back with a new threat, Frankie must struggle to keep her true identity a secret and keep her friends and family safe.
The Club 57 series that withdrew its application had listed alternative locations in Colombia and Mexico. Its application cited an expenditure of more than $6.8 million, employing 110 Miami-Dade residents for the projected nine-month production period and producing 80% of the project in the area.
Both series will air on Nickelodeon: Filmed in the new state-of-the-art Viacom International Studios in Miami, I am Frankie was originally produced as Yo Soy Franky by Nickelodeon Latinoamérica in Colombia. The series is created by renowned Argentine writer Marcela Citterio. I am Frankie is produced by Paradiso Pictures and Nickelodeon Latin America, and airs on Nickelodeon channels worldwide; and Club 57 will be made for Nickelodeon Latinoamérica and Nickelodeon Brazil (Brasil).

NICKELODEON’S PRESCHOOL HIT PROPERTY PAW PATROL WINS “BEST YOUNG PROPERTY IN ASIA” AT THE ASIAN LICENSING AWARDS 2017
Jointly Celebrates a Merit Award with Saipo Baby (Hong Kong) Limited for “Best Licensee” at the Hong Kong Licensing Awards 2017
HONG KONG, 10 January 2018 – Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Asia today announced that Nickelodeon’s preschool hit property “PAW Patrol” produced by Spin Master Entertainment, celebrated its win in two award programs – Gold Award for “Best Young Property in Asia” at the Asian Licensing Awards 2017 and jointly celebrated a Merit Award with Saipo Baby (Hong Kong) Limited for “Best Licensee” at the Hong Kong Licensing Awards 2017. Both Award programs were held together in Hong Kong last night in conjunction with the Hong Kong International Licensing Show this week.
“Already in its fourth season globally, PAW Patrol is on fire and is gaining the attention of kids and parents everywhere. Receiving both wins is a testament to PAW Patrol’s popularity amongst our young fans and to the strong collaboration and support we have of our licensee partners in Asia,” said Claire O’Connor, Vice President, Consumer Products and Retail Marketing, Asia Pacific, Viacom International Media Networks. “PAW Patrol is a reflection of Nickelodeon’s preschool content, which has always been both smart and fun, powered by great stories, relatable characters and a meaningful curriculum that has been our hallmark.”
The CG-animated preschool series stars a pack of six heroic rescue pups – Chase, Marshall, Rocky, Rubble, Zuma and Skye – who are led by a tech-savvy boy named Ryder. Together, they work hard to protect the Adventure Bay community believing, “no job is too big, no pup is too small!” The series features a curriculum that focuses on citizenship, social skills and problem-solving as the characters use their unique skills and teamwork.
Building on the incredible success of the top-rated global preschool franchise, Nickelodeon held a number of PAW Patrol themed mall shows and events, which have included mall shows, character meet and greets, merchandising, screenings and more across China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan. Through its collaboration with Life Like Touring, Nickelodeon also brought PAW Patrol Live! “Race to the Rescue”, its first PAW Patrol live show, to tour Australia, New Zealand and Singapore last year. The live show will continue to tour across Asia Pacific this year.
With 2018 being the Year of the Dog this Chinese New Year, consumers across Asia can look forward to a limited edition PAW Patrol Chinese New Year plush collection, and Chinese New Year celebrations and mall promotions featuring the pups across Asia*. Organized by the Asian Licensing Association, the Asian Licensing Awards, recognizes the outstanding achievements of licensed properties, licensing companies, licensing agents, advertising and promotional firms for their development, launch and promotion of licensed properties and trademarks throughout Asia for the preceding year. The Asian Licensing Awards celebrate excellence, innovation and creativity across the licensing spectrum. Separately, the Hong Kong Licensing Awards is a dedicated licensing award scheme for creative industries in Hong Kong.
* Availability of the limited edition PAW Patrol Chinese New Year plush collection and Chinese New Year celebrations featuring the pups vary by markets.

Fort Myers, Florida's Sophia Forest talks about 'I Am Frankie' role on Nickelodeon
"Feels like things are getting real" is the opening line to the catchy theme song for Nickelodeon's hit new show, I Am Frankie.

A budding acting career has definitely gotten real for Sophia Forest, 12, of Fort Myers, Florida who plays the younger sister to teen android Frankie, a top-secret invention adopted into the family to protect it from nefarious forces.
“I can be sarcastic at times and pretty sassy,” Sophia says of her character, Jenny Gaines. “My character is pretty smart. She loves to play video games. That’s something me and my character have in common — playing video games,” Sophia told SWFL Parent & Child.
The 20-episode show launched in September 2017 and has developed a strong following. Sophia heads back to Miami this spring to tape the second season. It’s a wild dream-come-true for Sophia, who grew up a big fan of Nickelodeon. When she turned 2, the celebratory cake was Backyardigans themed. These days, she’s moved on to other Nick offerings: School of Rock, Henry Danger and Game Shakers.
“She really, really wanted to be on Nickelodeon,” says her mother, Gina Forest. “Since she was little, that’s what she watched and she wanted to be on it.”
That unexpected reality materialized quickly.
It started with modeling
Through the years, Gina says, people consistently urged her to guide Sophia into modeling, even as a baby.
“When she got older — 4 and up — she loved singing and dancing around the house, and being the center of attention,” including making spy and princess movies with her brother, Gina says.
After Sophia turned 9, Gina reached out to a local photographer who was photographing local talent for a modeling manager on the east coast. Gina snapped some photos and submitted them to Soleil Kids in Miami, which “immediately wrote me back and picked her up,” Gina says. This led to a lot of print work for Sophia, including Walmart, Canadian Tire and the European clothing company, Monsoon.
Sophia was booked for several commercials for Michaels craft store and City Furniture, and in print and video promotions for Moon Palace Resort in Jamaica.
“Acting is what she wanted to do, but when she had the opportunity to model, we thought, ‘Well, this is a start. Let’s see where it takes us,’” Gina says.
Acting wasn't far behind. Sophia soon connected with the Stellar Talent Agency in Pembroke Park. After attending a casting call for I Am Frankie, Sophia was called in November 2016 to a test that mixed and matched different characters to run through parts to assess the chemistry and composition of the potential cast. Sophia learned a script but was told at the last minute it was being switched. She had to learn the new one on the spot.
Innately vibrant, Sophia was excited and confident going into the first round of the audition.
“I felt like I could get it. I liked this character I was auditioning for,” she says.
Hopefuls had come from far and wide. The leading role, Frankie, is played by Alex Hook, a 16-year-old from Canada. Yet Sophia had been the only one chosen to test for the role of Jenny. “The casting director told me she was impressed with how well she did,” Gina says. “It all happened pretty fast.”

Filming in Miami
During filming, the duo relocated to a condo in Miami for three months. Sophia worked 10-hour days on the 17,000-square-foot studio set at the new state-of-the-art Viacom International Studios, which included squeezing in 15 hours of mandatory schoolwork per week. But she has no complaints.
“It’s really fun because everything is so cool,” Sophia says, explaining how the “fourth wall” is missing to make room for cameras, and that the different sets — home interior, high school — are all side-by-side. “I never thought it would be like that,” muses Sophia, who was the youngest person on the set and in the building.
She learned how to execute a safe slip-and-fall from a professional stunt person. After filming in the day, the cast was given a call sheet detailing scenes for the next day’s production and new lines to learn, returning to their condo as late as 9 in the evening.
“I can memorize my lines pretty fast,” Sophia says.
The demanding schedule meant they turned to P.F. Chang’s microwavable meals (Sophia's favorite) and other conveniences more often than not.
“Nobody feels like cooking at 8 at night," Gina says.

A bright future
Sophia is home-schooled and this year is enrolled in Florida Virtual School. She has an older brother, Brandon Dusseault, 14, and little sister, Isabelle Forest, 6. Their father, Mark Forest, held down the fort during the filming. He had flexibility in his sales career to work from home.
Mark’s parents will help while Gina and Sophia are in production for Season 2.
While in production this last year, Gina and Sophia often returned from Miami to spend time with the family and mini-pinscher, Monte, at home in the Fort Myers area on weekends. Or Mark and Sophia’s siblings would take a little trip to the east coast.
“I honestly think the biggest challenge was being away from my house, family and dog a long time,” Sophia says. “My little sister always wanted to play with me while I was away filming. It made me sad sometimes.”
Sophia is bright and outgoing and likes to read action, adventure and mystery books. She readily shares what she’s reading these days — the Warriors cat and Serafina series. She’s “all about cats,” though Gina is allergic to them. She’s also been taking ballet lessons off and on since she was 4.
Will acting play a bigger role in her future?
“I honestly would like to pursue my acting. I hope I can keep it up for years to come,” Sophia says. “I would like to do movies and things like that.”
I Am Frankie season two is slated to premiere this Fall on Nickelodeon. Fans can watch the first season of I Am Frankie on Nickelodeon, Nick.com/Frankie and on the Nick App.
