Nickelodeon has teamed up with Esports Arena in Oakland, California for a tournament on Saturday, October 13 to promote the networks brand-new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
Dubbed the Super Smash Bros. Shell Showdown, the tournament will feature events for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Wii U, Super Smash Bros. Melee, as well as PC-based Smash-like games Rivals of Aether and Icons: Combat Arena.
Esports Arena fighting game community project manager Stephen “Bam” Bamidele told The Esports Observer that the company has been in talks with Nickelodeon for several months looking for an opportunity to partner. According to Bamidele, Super Smash Bros. was selected because, out of the games Esports Arena presents events for, its audience aligns most closely with that of Nickelodeon.
Rise of the TMNT will also serve as the event’s presenting partner.
Rise of the TMNT will serve as the event’s presenting partner along with Nickelodeon. Banners and signs advertising the show will be featured throughout the venue, and the show’s iconography will be integrated into the Twitch broadcast. While other games will be present at the tournament, Bamidele said that only the portion of the livestream featuring Super Smash Bros. titles will include Nickelodeon and Rise of the TMNT branding.

The Super Smash Bros. Shell Showdown is Nickelodeon's latest foray into eSports. In 2017, Nickelodeon invested in Super League Gaming, and will debut a new short-form digital series titled Minecraft City Champs, produced in partnership with Super League Gaming, on their official YouTube channel soon. Most recently, Nickelodeon Latin America premiered the brand-new eSports comedy-drama series Noobees in September 2018.
Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles follows the Turtles on all-new adventures as they master new powers, encounter absurd mutants and battle bizarre villains, each with their own motivations. Ranging from mystics, mutants and madmen, new creatures and villains emerge to take on Raph, Leo, Donnie and Mikey in battles across New York City. From the tallest skyscraper to the dankest sewer drain, the brothers learn to work together and navigate the perils of New York City and the hidden realms below in order to fulfill their destiny to become a team of heroes.
