Jack Black Reveals He Wants To Make A 'Nacho Libre' Sequel

Jack Black is ready to don the blue-and-red mask once again for a sequel to his wrestling comedy Nacho Libre, which paid loving tribute to the wild and wonderful world of Mexican wrestling (aka Lucha libre)!

The actor, speaking on British talkshow The Jonathan Ross Show, revealed that he wants to make a sequel to his 2006 Nickelodeon Movie Nacho Libre and that he's never given up on returning to the wrestling ring, admitting, “I’ve always wanted to do another Nacho Libre.”

The film, which was written by Jared and Jerusha Hess and Mike White, directed by Jared Hess and produced by Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Pictures, was loosely based on the story of Fray Tormenta, a Mexican Catholic priest who had a 23-year career as a masked luchador and competed in order to support the orphanage he ran.

Black produced the film with White, David Klawans and Julia Pistor, which went on to gross around $100M worldwide for Paramount Pictures against a budget of $35M. In the film, Black played Ignacio (Nacho), a cook for a Mexican orphanage, who makes his dreams of wrestling superstardom come true when he turns to wrestling after he was robbed for the the tortilla chips he was collecting for the orphans.

Raised in the monastery where he is now the cook, Nacho finds a way to earn money for the holy place by wrestling, even though it is strictly forbidden by the church elders. Naturally, Nacho isn't acting out of purely altruistic measures, as he wishes to help Sister Encarnacion (Ana de la Reguera), a beautiful Mexican nun who has recently arrived at the monastery.

Nacho Libre was Jack Black’s first solo vehicle after Richard Linklater’s School of Rock made him an even bigger star than he already was. It was also director Jared Hess’ follow-up to his break-out indie Napoleon Dynamite.

The Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Kung Fu Panda star has previously expressed his interest in a sequel. In 2006, he said, “I sure hope [there’s a sequel]. I love working with Jared. I think it’s a good bet that we’ll collaborate on something again. Mike had an idea that it would be Nacho goes to Japan, we’ll see though. In October 2009, Jared Hess revealed that Paramount had never approached him about a sequel but that he would “love to work with Black again”.

The three-time Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards host was speaking to Ross, whose show airs on ITV on Saturday evenings, alongside Avengers and Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna Lumley and Ocean’s Eight, Elizabeth star Cate Blanchett, as well as Paul Whitehouse, Ray Winstone and Ashley Banjo. The episode airs Saturday night (September 8) at 9.45pm on ITV.

Black is currently on the promotional trail for his spooky child-friendly horror movie The House with a Clock in its Walls. The actor has confirmed that a follow-up to 2006's Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny is happening, and is expected to to reunite with Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan and Kevin Hart for more action and adventure in the sequel to 2017 smash hit Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.
