Carlos PenaVega Discusses Potential ‘Big Time Rush’ Reunion On Finale’s 5th Anniversary

Nickelodeon hit it big with its music-centric comedy series Big Time Rush, which premiered in 2009 and wrapped up with an hour-long finale five years ago, on July 25, 2013. To celebrate, BTR alum Carlos PenaVega and his wife Alexa PenaVega, who guest-starred in the series finale, shared with International Business Times their favorite memories from that time in their lives.

Big Time Rush followed four friends and hockey players from Minnesota — Kendall Knight (Kendall Schmidt), Carlos Garcia (Carlos PenaVega), James Diamond (James Maslow) and Logan Mitchell (Logan Henderson) — who moved to Los Angeles after being offered the opportunity to form a boy band. Thus, Big Time Rush was born. The show’s cast also included Ciara Bravo (Katie Knight), Stephen Kramer Glickman (Gustavo Rocque), Tanya Chisholm (Kelly Wainwright), Challen Cates (Jennifer Knight), Erin Sanders (Camille Roberts) and Katelyn Tarver (Jo Taylor). Melise (Lucy Stone) was also a recurring star.

Over the course of its four-season run, the actors’ lives mimicked that of their onscreen characters. Both on- and off-screen, multiple Big Time Rush albums were released, sold-out tours were embarked on, and millions of fans, also known as Rushers, were made.

During an interview with the PenaVegas on Tuesday about their upcoming Hallmark movie, IBT mentioned that Wednesday was the 5th anniversary of the show’s end, and the two were very surprised. “No way, are you kidding me,” Alexa asked. “That means we’ve been together longer than five years. Oh my gosh. It flies by so quickly.”

On This Day | Big Time Finale

On this day 5 YEARS AGO, we said goodbye to Big Time Rush 😢

When IBT mentioned that Wednesday was the 5th anniversary of the show’s end, the two were very surprised. “No way, are you kidding me,” Alexa asked. “That means we’ve been together longer than five years. Oh my gosh. It flies by so quickly.”

Carlos was just stunned, asking, “Wait, how many? Five years? Five years since the end of Big Time Rush?”

His time in Big Time Rush was a huge part of his life and something that he loved, which is why Carlos was quick to share his favorite part about being a part of the project and how he’d feel about reuniting with his former bandmates.

“You know, for me, I really love performing and doing the TV show on set was fun, but going out and seeing the fans in person and getting that kind of immediate, instant gratification, there’s nothing like that,” he said. “And that, I think, is the one thing that I miss. And I look back and look at videos. That would be fun to do again someday.”

Hear that, Rushers? Seeing fans was his favorite part. Hopefully, you also didn’t miss that last part where he said he’d want to do it again one day. How exactly would he like to reunite with Big Time Rush — a show/movie or a tour? “Either or, yeah, I’ll take it,” he said.

While Carlos would “absolutely” love to reunite, he’s not sure if the other alums would want to, “but if there was a time or place and they were ready to go, I would be,” he said.

Schmidt is currently working on music as part of his longtime music duo, Heffron Drive, with Dustin Belt. Maslow has been filming various TV shows and movies over the last few years while recording solo music. As for Henderson, he’s also very focused on his own music.

Still, when IBT spoke with Henderson last year at Nickelodeon HALO Awards, he said that while he’s focused on his solo music right now, “if we come back at some point, I’m sure it will be pretty cool.” Henderson doesn’t know about doing a reunion movie or show, but thinks “it would be cooler to do, like, one concert,” sort of “like one last hoorah-type thing.”

When Henderson’s thoughts were relayed to Carlos, he immediately loved the idea of reuniting for a crazy, big-time performance.

“Oh, oh my gosh, absolutely,” he said. “Absolutely.”

All the Rushers out there are probably elated to hear that two out of four of the boys are now on board for some reunion fun, and Alexa is right there with you. She’s a diehard fan of Big Time Rush, both the band and the show.

“I’ll play [the show] and I’m just like, ‘Babe, you gotta figure out how to get those boys back together,’ because it just feels good to watch them,” she said. “The music is so good, the show was fun. Even if they didn’t do the show, the music they put out was just — I genuinely loved it. And they’re all super talented.”

Her love of Big Time Rush, and Carlos, is why even though it’s been five years, it was still easy for Alexa to recall her time working on the series finale, which was the first time she and Carlos had acted onscreen together. She even shared the organic way her participation in the episode came about.

“We had been falling in love all summer, spending time together, and I was there for his whole shoot that season,” she said. “So, we had no idea I was going to be in the finale and Scott [Fellows], the creator, after seeing me on set all the time and around, he asked Carlos, like, ‘Would you be okay with this? Would she be okay with coming in?’ And we were beyond excited. To be a part of a close of something that was so big, or a finish of something that was so big, in Carlos’ life, it feels really special to have been a part of that.”
