Viacom-owned UK commercial public service broadcaster (PSB) Channel 5 is launching its first move into subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) by taking its British preschool programming brand, Milkshake! to Amazon Channels, within Prime Video!
The ad-free service will be called More Milkshake! and will be available for £2.99 GBP (€3.40; $4 USD) a month, and will offer Amazon Prime customers in the UK unlimited, ad-free access to a wide range of Milkshake! preschool content, including episodes of Thomas and Friends, Bob the Builder and Fireman Sam.
Amazon Channels launched in the UK in May 2017, enabling Prime members to add to the Prime Video offering by choosing from a range of subscription services for an additional fee.
“We’re really excited to be launching More Milkshake! on Amazon Channels, offering Prime members a new and seamless way for their families and friends to enjoy watching our preschool content. This latest venture underlines our digital strategy; to ensure our content is available wherever and whenever our audience want to watch,” said James Tatam, Vice President, commercial, operations and strategic services, Channel 5.
“We’re delighted to add More Milkshake! to Amazon Channels on Prime Video in the UK. We want to offer our customers the widest selection of kids shows, and with the addition of More Milkshake!, they will be able to access all of their favourites in one place,” said Alex Green, European MD of channels and sport at Amazon Prime Video.
Milkshake!, which airs on Channel 5 everyday, achieved its best-ever annual share of all kids viewing in 2017. The preschool programming block played an important role in pushing Channel 5’s portfolio of TV channels to deliver its highest-ever annual share of viewing amongst both ABC1 and 16 to 34-year-old TV viewers in the UK in 2017: its strongest overall ratings performance for 13 years.
The ratings come shortly after the Viacom-owned network revamped Milkshake! for the first time in more than a decade, sporting a new on-air logo and opening title sequences, as well an “All New Week” event schedule and the first-ever Milkshake! YouTube Channel. The block has also been bringing out new original content, including recently commissioned Shane the Chef, produced by London’s Hoho Entertainment and Welsh prodco Cloth Cat Animation.
