Viacom CEO Talks Appetite For Deals, Paramount's Turnaround Efforts At 45th Annual UBS Global Media And Communications Conference
"This continues to be an extremely undervalued company," Bob Bakish tells the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York.
Viacom is mostly focused on its current businesses and growing them organically, Chief Executive Officer Bob Bakish said Tuesday, with possible acquisitions likely to be smaller deals that can help it with that strategy.
"There is tremendous value to unlock from these assets" Viacom owns, he said when asked at the 45th annual UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York about all the recent industry deal chatter and his interest in acquisitions. "Our overwhelming focus...is on organic execution." Bakish added: "We will look at small opportunities that we can tuck in to use to accelerate our growth strategy."
The Viacom CEO spent much time Tuesday discussing his focus over the past year on stabilizing Viacom's business after becoming interim and then permanent CEO late last year and what is next for the company. "I feel very good about the progress we made," he said, emphasizing that "obviously, we are not done." As the company looks to 2018, he reiterated, management would focus on accelerating business momentum and highlighting the true value of the business.
"This thing is a significant cash machine," he said about the company and its $1.5 billion-$1.7 billion in annual cash flow, adding that "this continues to be an extremely undervalued company." In that context, he cited a $500 million India business that Viacom owns half of and that it doesn't get "any value recognition for." He added that the Paramount studio is also "clearly worth billions and billions of dollars" despite currently having "diminutive" profits.
He said the company has focused on bringing its flagship brands to life more, improving U.S. advertising trends, strengthening distribution relationships and rebuilding Paramount, and the company is continuing to see the benefits.
"The Hollywood community wants to be at Paramount," which is "a very good thing" for a creative company, Bakish said in lauding the early turnaround momentum of the studio under the leadership of Jim Gianopulos.
The Viacom CEO said 2019 will see Paramount get a chance to show off its exciting new slate, including branded MTV, Nickelodeon and BET films, adding that the studio also has an "under-recognized" TV production business, which is key to dampening the volatility of the film business. "There is a lot of great stuff going on" at the studio, he said, predicting improving profitability as "Jim is running the studio better" and there is room for better film performances and cost savings. "I am tremendously excited about what the team is doing."
Asked to go deeper on the TV production business outlook, he said it has already reached about $200 million in annual revenue and "probably doubles from there" as the company continues to look to grow it.
Bakish also argued that people usually think of Viacom as a pay TV company, but he really sees it as "a global content engine" that is active across TV, film and, increasingly, digital content. "If you listen to the conversation around media today, it is about content," he said, and "fundamentally," Viacom is a content company.
Asked about his experience running Viacom's international business, he said it was unprofitable when he took over, but with a focus on recognizable brands and partnering across the company and with other companies, it has become a key growth driver for the firm.
He again touted the company's approach of developing fresh content and continuing or rebooting franchises, such as via Paramount's recent deal for more Terminator movies with James Cameron, as well as MTV's Jersey Shore reboot Floribama Shore. He also touted Nickelodeon's animated Top Wing, which debuted on the network in November, calling it the next Paw Patrol, which is one of the network's big hits.
Bakish highlighted that he continued to be excited about the prospects for such flagship networks as MTV, BET and Comedy Central. "I'm very excited about what they have to come," he said after mentioning he spent time last week with the Comedy Central programming team, for example,.
Bakish reiterated that Viacom was now going into growth mode via three core strategies, arguing there was "substantial" upside ahead.
The first: taking advantage of next-generation business opportunities in the media networks sector, such as launching on new platforms, striking licensing deals with over-the-top providers and pushing further into direct-to-consumer offers. Bakish has said that the company sees more than 25 percent growth in these areas to about $450 million in fiscal year 2018 with a plan to "deliver more than $1 billion organically by 2020."
Asked about Philo, a recently unveiled service offering sports-free skinny TV bundles, Bakish said that "25-50 percent" of people don’t want to pay for sports content.
The adoption of media products on mobile devices is the "next great growth leg" opportunity for Viacom, Bakish said. In Japan, the company launched a variant of MTV on mobile. Now, it has more users there than on traditional pay TV.
Second is diversifying the company's business beyond media, such as via live events and consumer products, and growing its share and margins. The diversification businesses will bring in $350 million in revenue this fiscal year, with a goal of $500 million-$600 million by 2020, Bakish has said.
The third area is cost savings. "We see considerable opportunity" for $100 million in savings in fiscal year 2018 and hundreds of millions in savings "mostly realized" by fiscal year 2019, he recently said, citing such areas as real estate, automation and procurement.

Melissa Joan Hart Reflects On Her Child Star Years As Clarissa And Sabrina
Melissa Joan Hart is aware she will always be recognized as pizza-loving Clarissa Darling from Nickelodeon’s iconic '90s series Clarissa Explains it All or the bewitching Sabrina from Sabrina the Teenage Witch — and the former child star doesn’t mind it one bit.
These days, the 41-year-old has been busy tackling on a completely different role — being a mother to three boys. When Hart isn't taking on a film or TV show, she prefers to be at home as a hands-on parent in Connecticut.
Hart, a passionate advocate for nurturing the creativity of children, recently partnered with Jif Peanut Butter to announce the finalist for the Imagine If, With Jif contest. It features three inspiring kids with entrepreneurial ideas for making the world a better place.
Fox News spoke with Hart about Clarissa, Sabrina and Melissa the mom:
Fox News: How does it feel to still be recognized for your characters?
Melissa Joan Hart: I think that’s what every actor really wants, right? Everyone wants that one character who’s iconic, lives on and still lives in people’s memories. I’m just honored I have people tell me every day ‘I grew up with you.’ It’s just so lovely... Everyone thinks I went to high school with them… They all feel like I’m a friend and that’s such an amazing feeling.
It can be annoying sometimes when people come up to you in public and you’re in a bad situation, like you're running to the airport, your dog just died and you have to make an impression in 15 minutes that’s going to defy how that person thinks about you. But at the same time, when people say those things, and you know you were such a special part of their life, it’s just amazing.
Fox News: Do you stay in touch with any of your former cast mates?
Hart: Oh yeah. [The Sabrina cast], we were all together last week… Beth Broderick (Zelda) and I actually did a movie that will be out soon called A Very Merry Toy Store for Lifetime. She plays my mom. Caroline Rhea (Hilda) and I stay in touch and she comes up to Connecticut to visit with her daughter. And the rest of us just email and text. I’m not in touch with the Clarissa cast anymore.
Fox News: How did you avoid the child star curse?
Hart: A lot of credit has to go to my parents and the way I was raised. And also being the oldest sibling with all of these kids and having a sense of responsibility for them. And I was kept out of Hollywood. I filmed my first show in Orlando... I feel like keeping me grounded, keeping me out of the spotlight so much maybe kept me out of trouble.
Fox News: Sabrina is getting a reboot. What’s your impression of it?
Hart: Obviously, all these people are looking for reboots now. They seem to do well. But I think it’s going to be different. Ours was a family comedy and theirs is going to be a darker, millennial soap opera. It’s a definitely a different show.
Fox News: Where would your character be now?
Hart: … I think Harvey and I, we would probably be running like a Hogwarts school for witches with our children.
Fox News: I read that you initially said no to horror films.
Hart: I made a very conscious decision at the time. Just because the movie Scream was so good and so popular, I just didn’t want to be in a movie that was trying to live up to that, but somehow not make it. That’s why I chose not to do those horror movies that followed on its heels. I just thought none of them were as good as Scream. But then, I turned down so many film roles at the time. It was extremely difficult to do movies and do my show at the same time.
But with that being said, I do regret it slightly. It’s probably the one place in my career where I could have done more good as far as giving myself up in terms of a film career. If I had gotten a few more films under my belt, then maybe it would have helped. But at the time, I just made a very conscious decision not to do a B-horror movie. I just didn’t want to be in one of them.
Fox News: What’s life been like for you as a mom?
Hart: When I had my kids, the intention was for me to raise them. I had always planned on being a hands-on mom. You know, I just wanted to be the mom who bakes the cupcakes, walks the kids to the bus stop, go to the PTA meetings and all that. And so, when I got Melissa and Joey, it became a little bit more difficult for me to be involved in day-to-day activities.
But since the show ended, and having my third son, I really get to be home… This is what I wanted when I had children and what I imagined what life would be like with my family. It’s nice that I have the kind of career where I can work sometimes, but I also can be a full-time mom,
Fox News: How do you balance having a high-profile life all while being a dedicated wife and mom?
Hart: Well, that’s the trick! Basically, my calendar is my best friend. I have a well-scheduled calendar that tells me exactly where I’m supposed to be and when. I know what my obligations are. I love it when I plan my week. And that’s where I look to see where I can fit in things, like workouts and girl lunches, and just making sure I get date nights with my husband and see my family…. It’s an everyday balancing act… But I try to make it all work, realizing that I’m always going to be tired. But that’s OK!
Fox News: What made you want to participate in this campaign for Jif?
Hart: Oh, I just think it’s a wonderful thing they’re doing. You know, giving grants to kids and families that have wonderful ideas… How great it is, especially in these days where there just seems to be a lot of bad news going around – it’s nice to have something positive where they’re looking for people that are looking to improve the future.

'The Loud House', 'SpongeBob SquarePants' And 'Bunsen Is A Beast' Nominated In 45th Annual Annie Awards
The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, has announced the exciting news that Nickelodeon's hit animated series The Loud House, Bunsen Is a Beast and SpongeBob SquarePants have received nominations in the Achievement Categories of the 45th Annual Annie Awards, which recognizes the year’s best in the field of animation!
The Loud House Halloween Special “Tricked!” has been nominated for the "Outstanding Achievement for Production Design in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production" award, and voice actors Tom Kenny and Jeremy Rowley have both been nominated for the "Outstanding Achievement for Voice Acting in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production" award for their work on SpongeBob SquarePants and Bunsen Is a Beast, respectively.
Additionally, voice actor Nicolas Cantu, who voices Gumball in the US-dub of Cartoon Network's The Amazing World Of Gumball, a animated series that airs on Nickelodeon Austria (Österreich) and Nickelodeon Switzerland (Schweiz) with a German dub, has also been nominated for in the "Outstanding Achievement for Voice Acting in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production" category.

The Certificate of Merit award will be presented to David Nimitz, devoted friend and caretaker of veteran voice actress and ASIFA-Hollywood & Annie Award™ pioneer, June Foray, who passed away in July at the age of 99.
ASIFA-Hollywood is the world’s first and foremost professional organization dedicated to promoting the Art of Animation and celebrating the people who create it. Today, ASIFA-Hollywood, the largest chapter of the international organization ASIFA, supports a range of animation activities and preservation efforts through its membership. Current initiatives include the Animation Archive, Animation Aid Foundation, animated film preservation, special events, classes and screenings.

Nickelodeon unveiled the sneak-peek during the networks Nickelodeon Upfront 2017 presentation earlier this year.
Currently scheduled to be released in theaters by Paramount Pictures on Friday 15th March 2019, the film will feature the voices of Matthew Broderick (Ferris Bueller's Day Off), Jennifer Garner (Nine Lives), Jeffrey Tambor (Mr. Popper's Penguins), Kenan Thompson (All That, Kenan & Kel, Good Burger, SNL), Ken Jeong (Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness), Mila Kunis (Family Guy), John Oliver (The Daily Show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, live-action Lion King), and Brianna Denski (Momsters: When Moms Go Bad).
Following the release of the film, Nickelodeon will also launch a brand-new television series inspired by the movie in 2019.

A New York City apartment building holds mysteries and adventures behind every door in Nickelodeon’s newest animated series, Welcome to the Wayne, premiering on Nickelodeon Greece on Monday 11th December 2017 at 21:30. Created and written by Emmy® Award-winning writer and composer Billy Lopez (The Wonder Pets) and executive produced by Emmy Award-winning creative executive Michael Pecoriello (Yu-Gi-Oh!), the 20-episode series, locally titled Καλωσήρθες στο Γουέιν, follows three kids as they explore their strange and fantastical apartment building, the Wayne, where nothing is what it seems.
Welcome to the Wayne follows the comedic adventures of three friends, Ansi Molina, Olly Timbers, and Saraline Timbers, as they aim to unlock the secrets of the Wayne. Each new investigation brings them face-to-face with new characters, creatures, and oddities, known as “Wayne Phenomena,” leading them closer to uncovering the truth about the weird things happening in their building.
In the series premiere, “Rise and Shine Sleepyhead,” Ansi, a new resident of the Wayne, must work with siblings Olly and Saraline to stop a rampaging threat deep within their home.
The voice cast of the US-English dub of Welcome to the Wayne includes: Alanna Ubach (Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce) as Ansi, the anxious new kid in town; creator and co-executive producer Billy Lopez as Olly Timbers, the adventurous 10-year-old son of a toy maker and a military scientist, and lifelong resident of the Wayne; and Dana Steingold (Avenue Q musical) as Saraline Timbers, Olly’s responsible and more mature little sister.

Billy Lopez is an Emmy-winning writer and composer from New York City. He has written for shows including Phineas and Ferb and South Park and been head writer on several preschool shows, including The Wonder Pets!, 3rd & Bird! and PBS’s Peg + Cat. Lopez also co-created an adult sitcom for ABC Studios. Michael Pecoriello is an Emmy Award-winning creative leader. He has overseen campaigns for Nickelodeon tent poles Kids’ Choice Awards, Kids’ Choice Sports and the HALO Awards and also served as supervising producer and head writer on animated series Yu-Gi-Oh!

Tenzing Norgay Trainor is hopping networks, reuniting with his former Liv and Maddie showrunners!
The 16-year-old actor, who played Parker *insert mysterious/still not revealed middle name here* Rooney on the show, will be guest starring on Nickelodeon’s new series, Knight Squad.
Revealed by Ron Hart this morning, Tenzing will be playing a character named Jimbo. No word on yet this is a one time thing, recurring, or may turn into a regular gig. Hart also revealed a first-look at the official Knight Squad logo!
While not much is known about the episode Tenzing will be appearing in, it is known that it’s hilarious, courtesy of series star Lilimar.

In Nickelodeon's Lip Sync Battle Shorties: Holiday Special, locally titled Lip Sync Battle Kids : le meilleur playback, three kids will lip sync along to huge hits from superstars like Bruno Mars (24K Magic), Justin Bieber (Drummer Boy), and Kelly Clarkson (Underneath the Tree), with themed costumes, dancing, and performances to try to take home the Iced Out Mic!
Lip Sync Battle Shorties: Holiday Special will be full of energy, entertainment and holiday spirit. Hosted by Nick Cannon and his sidekick, the kid-favourite, singing, dancing, social media sensation JoJo Siwa, Lip Sync Battle Shorties will celebrate kids' top artists. JoJo Siwa will provide commentary on each performance, and the episode will also feature the Shorties Dance Crew, a 10-person backup crew that has mastered all styles of dance from break-dancing to ballroom, plus a special appearance by Fifth Harmony!
“On Lip Sync Battle Shorties the kids are in charge, the performances come straight from their imagination. They’re so much cooler than we are!,” said executive producers Casey Patterson and Jay Peterson.
Lip Sync Battle Shorties lets three talented real-life kid participants personalize their performances, allowing them to make decisions on all creative elements, from song and costume selection, to choreography and staging, so that they can perform on-stage like their favourite artists.
