SpongeBob SquarePants Musical Star Ethan Slater Deep-Dives into His Fave Episodes
Ethan Slater didn’t grow up with cable. He remembers watching SpongeBob SquarePants, the hit Nickelodeon animated series about a relentlessly optimistic yellow sponge, at his “bubby’s house” at the age of seven or at his middle school friends’ houses before rehearsing with his childhood pal band, Pink Milk & Cashews. “My favorite show was SpongeBob—like everyone,” he recently told Broadway.com.
Created by former marine biology teacher and cartoonist Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants premiered on Nickelodeon USA in 1999. Years later, SpongeBob SquarePants has become a multi-billion-dollar media franchise, with full-length films, theme parks, a Season 11 start slated for this September and a splashy Broadway musical waiting in the wings.
At the center of that musical is Slater, who will make his Broadway debut in the role of SpongeBob himself when performances begin this fall. Slater has been leading SpongeBob SquarePants from the beginning; the musical premiered at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre last summer, when many of the animators, writers and creators from the cartoon stopped by to meet the cast. This past fall, Slater was able to sit in on the taping of an episode in Los Angeles at Nickelodeon Studios.

“They were very generous. Tom Kenny [who has provided the voice of SpongeBob in the cartoon since the beginning] is a genius,” Slater said. “It was really fun to hang out with them and watch them do their thing.”
With a creative team that includes direction from Tina Landau, music supervision from Tom Kitt and song contributions ranging from Sara Bareilles to Panic! at the Disco to John Legend, SpongeBob seemed likely to bubble to the top of the Great White Way. Now that it is, Slater cannot wait to share this brand-new musical inspired by the beloved series with both diehard fans and first-timers.
“There are definitely jokes that avid fans are going to get, but it’s a totally original story with totally original jokes that are hilarious,” Slater said. “I’m super proud and excited about it. It’s a story about community. It’s a story about optimism and how that can combat fear. I really look forward to sharing it.”
SpongeBob SquarePants begins previews on November 6 at the Palace Theatre and opens on December 4. Brush up on your SpongeBob or get a must-see tutorial for the first time with Slater’s five favorite episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants!
5. Band Geeks
“Squilliam, who is everything Squidward wishes he was, calls Squidward and pressures him into putting together a band. I just love this episode. It has a million iconic jokes. Like Patrick asks, ‘Is mayonnaise an instrument?’ Squidward says no, and Patrick raises his hand again. And Squidward says, ‘Horseradish isn’t an instrument either,’ and he lowers his hand. And all SpongeBob wants is to be part of a kickline. It’s amazing.”
4. Fungus Among Us
“SpongeBob is trying to feed Gary, and then he finds this little green glob, called ‘The Ick.’ It attaches to his head and starts growing. It takes him over. He gets quarantined. At the very end, everything is covered in Ick, and it’s grown beyond management. Gary, his pet, comes back in and eats it off of everyone. He saves the day because he’s a bottom feeder. I love any episode where Gary is the savior.”
3. Sleepytime
“SpongeBob ends up hopping around from dream to dream. He jumps into Gary’s dream, and Gary is this super-genius British librarian. Patrick is on one of those horses that you put quarters in in another dream. My favorite moment of the episode is when he goes into Squidward's dream. He’s playing clarinet in front of this large, Baroque audience. He breaks his clarinet, and SpongeBob turns himself into a clarinet. It’s just great.”
2. Ripped Pants
"Ripped Pants is a classic. SpongeBob is trying to make Sandy laugh, so he rips his pants. Everybody on the beach laughs with him—or at him. He keeps ripping his pants in different situations, and the town gets frustrated with this attempt at the same joke. I find that incredibly relatable. In my senior year of high school, I was doing a dance with a bunch of friends for the talent show, and my pants split entirely in half. It was incredible.”
1. Bubble Buddy
“It’s Leif Erikson Day. SpongeBob wants to celebrate, but no one’s really around. So he blows up a bubble and calls him Bubble Buddy. People get frustrated with how SpongeBob is pretending this inanimate object is a friend. At the end, the whole town is chanting, ‘Pop the bubble!’ Squidward is going to pop him until all of a sudden, Bubble Buddy grabs his hand and says, 'Hey, don’t I get a say in this?’ He puts on a bubble fedora and gets in a bubble taxi and floats away. That one always gets me.”
SpongeBob SquarePants begins on November 6 and opens on December 4 at the Palace Theatre. Tickets for the SpongeBob SquarePants Broadway musical are currently on sale via Ticketmaster.com. More information and ticketing details can be found on the musical’s website, SpongeBobBroadway.com.

“iCarly” Star Nathan Kress Reveals Which Girl Freddie Belonged With and You Might Not Like His Answer
He also explains what that finale kiss between Freddie and Carly was all about!
Believe it or not, this Friday is iCarly's tenth birthday!
Yup, it's been ten years since the show premiered on Nickelodeon USA. And even after ten years, there's still one burning question the fans are still dying to know an answer to: WHO DID FREDDIE LOVE? Carly or Sam?
Some fans say that Freddie's one true love was always Carly, after all, she kissed him in the finale episode right as she was leaving for Italy. It had to mean something right? Well, not according to Seddie shippers. They think that Carly was just a childhood crush and Sam was Freddie's true love. I mean, Freddie came running when he thought Sam was hurt during her Sam & Cat days, and they're the pair that actually dated!
Well, to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the show, Nickelodeon has a major treat iCarly fans: They're dedicating a whole episode of Game Shakers to addressing the Creddie vs. Seddie debate, and Seventeen.com got the chance to chat with the director of the episode and iCarly royalty, Nathan Kress, to pick his brain on all the iCarly shipping questions that have been eating you up for the past five years!
So let's just get the most important question out of the way right here and now: Who does Nathan think Freddie really loved? Nathan had a pretty good answer to that question, but not one you'll particularly love.
"I get that there's merit to both sides, but if this was actual real life and not a sitcom, I really don't think that Freddie should end up with either one of those girls," Nathan said in a brutally honest moment. "There's a lot of reasons why neither relationship actually makes sense. Just knowing what I know about real-life relationships and what's important, I don't really see many of those things in either one of those relationships."
Actually, he has some pretty solid advice for Freddie Benson. "If Nathan and Freddie sat down and had lunch, and he was talking to me about these girls that he just couldn't decide between and there were so many great things about both of them, knowing what I know, I would probably recommend he move to another country that's not Italy and just start over and find a girl that is actually into him without having to push himself in front of a taco truck." Oooooooh, BURN Carly. "And also one that does not constantly verbally and physically abuse him." OUCH, Sam.
Nathan's talking straighup facts. And even though he doesn't think Freddie should end up with Carly or Sam, he does have a special place in his heart for all things iCarly, including Creddie and Seddie. Keep reading to learn Nathan's opinions on all your iCarly shipping questions, like what that finale kiss between Carly and Freddie meant, what it was like filming those iconic kiss scenes, and whether the gang would be down for a full-blown reunion episode! (And BONUS: Nathan weighs in on today's roster of Nickelodeon fan ships.)
17: So what DID that kiss between Carly and Freddie in the finale really mean?
Nathan: "It could be interpreted so many ways and I think for my own sake, I decided not to interpret it in a specific way because that’s the thing: there’s no explanation and the context doesn’t really lend itself to knowing exactly what it means.
"If I had to guess, I would say it was more of a friendly thing. Well, you know? I can't even say that because it wasn’t like a friendly little peck. It was a fairly serious, meaningful one. It didn't look particularly friendly to me. Maybe it was kind of her saying, 'I’m coming back at some point and then after that we’ll see.’ Like I don't think it was an all-the-sudden realization kiss of ‘Oh my gosh! I was in love with you this whole time, but now I’m leaving? How could I have been so silly? But remember me!’ Like I don't think it was this big dramatic kiss either. So that’s a good question.
"I guess at the time, I was trying not to think too far into it. It was just two friends reacting how they would react to a major life change that neither was particularly happy about because it was going to take two really good friends away from each other. So I can’t say with any definitive thing that in the script it said that it was romantic or friendly or one way or the other. It just played out in the moment like it was because it really was two friends saying goodbye. It sounds depressing, but it’s kind of true."
17: What was it like filming that scene?
Nathan: "For that one specifically, I really don't remember at all anything where the director came in and said 'I want it to be more this or less this.' From what I remember, they really did kind of back off and let us lay the moment. And I think, especially with something like that where it was playing very close to the realism of two friends whose saga together is largely about to end, at least for the time being, I think they were able to just kind of let us play how that would feel in real life because we had just finished our last web show together. And it was as if we were shooting it in real life. It was somber. There was a real heaviness that day. It was hard, but it made shooting that scene a lot easier because it was really kind of just us playing it how we would have played it. We didn't really have to act that much... aside from the actual kiss, because we definitely wouldn't have done that in real life. But the beats and the feeling were all pretty authentic."
17: Was it awkward filming the romantic scenes since you were all good friends behind the scenes?
Nathan: "It was really uncomfortable thinking about your cast mates in that way because we had gotten so close over the years that it was really hard to look at each other from a romantic standpoint — that we had to think of each other that way instead of we’re just a bunch of friends hanging out like we were in real life. That definitely made the dynamic a little awkward at times, I think especially between Jeanette and I because we had to act out in a way we weren’t in real life. It was kind of uncomfortable to branch out into that territory when we weren’t there AT ALL in real life. It definitely made things a little bit teenage levels of awkward."
17: When you were filming iCarly, were you surprised by how big the ships became in the fandom?
Nathan: "I don’t think any of us expected it to be such a thing that was going to be such a driving force in the show. The main thing that showed that is that we really didn't have that many episodes devoted to it. There was the one episode with Carly and Freddie where Freddie saved her life and that was their main thing. Then Sam and Freddie had this arc of three or four episodes. But besides that, we didn't want to laser in on that being the point of the show. So we didn’t dedicate a whole lot of time to it besides little things that could have been interpreted one way or the other. So I don’t think that any of us thought that it was going to be such a big debate and I don’t think any of us wanted it to be."
17: Was the love triangle planned from the beginning, or did it happen organically because of the fan response to your chemistry in the cast?
Nathan: "I think it was more of a chemistry thing. You'd have to ask Dan Schneider or one of the writers to see if that was more of an overarching thing that they were planning on, but because there was so little of that kind of dialogue and those kinds of moments that would have made you wonder in the first season, I think it was something that just sort of evolved."
17: Were you scared at all to find out who Freddie belonged with in "Game Shippers"?
Nathan: "In a way, I think I almost didn’t want to know. Just to kind of keep the mystery alive. But yeah, at that point, it was one of those things that I just realized that if that’s what everyone wants to know, we should at least bring up the topic since it’s never really discussed in any way whatsoever during the last episode. They’re so focused on Carly leaving that they never really focused on anything else. And I think it would have been a bad time for there to be a lot of focus on that. Because when it came down to it, it was about the friendship."
17: Was it weird filming an episode of Game Shakers all about iCarly, but playing yourself?
Nathan: "I guess it was kind of trippy thinking about how the universe had expanded to something else and we were being talked about in the context of another cast. It was nice because it kind of took the pressure off. This wasn't an iCarly reunion where all eyes were on us and, "Is this going to be the funniest episode of iCarly ever?!"
17: Would you ever do a reunion?
Nathan: "It's weird, I was thinking about it this morning, what it would be like for us to do a reunion episode? Because honestly, as tempting as it is to get the band back together and do all that stuff, I think all of us would probably be just a little bit worried that the expectation would be so impossibly high that we would never be able to satisfy everyone. Because it wouldn't just be bringing iCarly together — it would be bringing iCarly together to make an episode better and funnier than any iCarly episode that was ever made. That's the only way that people would say the reunion was worth it. That's the problem. As much as people say they would want it to happen, I don't know if that's necessarily true just because it would be so sad for our last thing to disappoint people.
"I definitely would never say that I would never do it, though. It would really come down to an outrageously good script. And not only one that I thought was really good, but one that every single person in the cast could get behind. If there was such a script, then it certainly wouldn't come down to whether or not I had any desire to do it because the thought of getting everyone back together again would be awesome. I would love it."
17: Do Miranda Cosgrove and Jennette McCurdy know about the Seddie vs. Creddie episode of Game Shakers? How do they feel about it?
Nathan: "I mentioned it. Around this time last year, we all got together and had kind of a cast dinner that we try to do roughly every year. At that point, I couldn't say much because the episode hadn't even been written yet. It was very much in the development stage. So there wasn't very much I could tell them. So we didn't get too far into it. But they just laughed and I'm sure it probably made them uncomfortable to bring up the whole topic again so we didn't pay that much attention to it. The dinner tends to be more towards life."
17: As a director of Nickelodeon shows and part of the most iconic Nickelodeon love triangle, are you aware of today's biggest ships like Chenry (Henry and Charlotte on Henry Danger) and Budson (Babe and Hudson from Game Shakers)?
Nathan: "What’s really funny is I’ve always wondered what the ships were, but I never actually knew. Now that you’re telling me for the first time, that’s confirming it. I could have guessed Henry and Charlotte. In a way, at least for the episodes I’ve directed, I haven't really seen too many episodes where Henry and Charlotte are doing anything that would kind of make me scratch my proverbial ear. But there’s definitely times that I’ve seen Henry kind of looking out for Charlotte doing sweet 'friends' things that I guess could be interpreted one way or the other. So I guess I could see where it’s coming from, but I personally haven't seen many of the explicit things that make me think 'Oooooooh, what’s going on there?' So I’m kind of in the dark, but watch me end up directing the episode where they get together or something and then I have to figure out that dynamic."
The iCarly anniversary celebration episode of Game Shakers premieres on Nickelodeon USA on Saturday, September 9th @ 8PM ET/PT, followed by a all-new The After Party! Check out a sneak peek below and then be sure to tune in to find out if the most enduring iCarly question will FINALLY be answered!
Official Nickelodeon USA Press Release Richard Petty Motorsports (RPM PR):
NEW YORK (September 7, 2017) – Darrell “Bubba” Wallace will join the lineup for Nickelodeon’s upcoming Tales of the Turtles 400 race weekend at Chicagoland Speedway, driving the No. 98 Nickelodeon Slime Ford in the NASCAR XFINITY race for Biagi DenBeste Racing and Richard Petty Motorsports (RPM).
Wallace competed in the RPM No. 43 Ford in four Monster Energy Series races this year filling in for the injured Aric Almirola, where he tallied two Top-15 finishes. Wallace found Victory Lane this season in the Camping World Truck Series at Michigan International Speedway in his first Truck Series race since 2014, giving the Alabama native six wins in his Truck Series career. A NASCAR XFINITY Series veteran, Wallace has 84 starts in the series and was on a roll of sixth-place finishes earlier this season in the No. 6 Ford.
“I’m really glad to get back behind the wheel of a race car,” said Wallace. “Chicago has always been a decent track for me where I’ve had some good finishes. I’m excited to get back in the XFINITY Series in a Ford Mustang. With the history with Biagi DenBeste Racing and RPM, we should have some good speed. It’s really cool to be pair with Nickelodeon. We’ve formed a great relationship over the past three years, and we’re able to do these one off races to attract the youth to the sport. With such a cool looking car this weekend, I think we’ll do just that.”
Nickelodeon is the entitlement sponsor of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday, Sept. 17, dubbed the Tales of the Turtles 400. The track will feature a weekend of action, activities and fun for the entire family with the iconic Heroes in a Half Shell.
The 1.5-mile track will serve as the site of an epic weekend showcase for the new Tales of the Turtles TV season, which is titled Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles because it consists of seven separate serialized stories. The featured drivers include:
Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series

The Tales of the Turtle 400 trophy will be on display at the track throughout the weekend. The winning designers were chosen through the Good Day for Play art competition held this past summer. The attendees and celebrity judges ended in a tie, selecting Chicago street artists Tubsz and Max Sansing to co-design the trophy. Artist E. LEE will have his work featured on a trackside billboard.
Special fan merchandise is available for the Tales of the Turtles 400 event and features fun, bright colors and the race logo. Nickelodeon USA Welcomes The Goldbergs to Nick at Nite’s Family Comedy Lineup Beginning Monday, Sept. 18

NEW YORK–Sept. 7, 2017– Nickelodeon is bringing Walkmans, stonewashed denim and big hair to Nick at Nite with the addition of the popular family sitcom The Goldbergs, beginning Monday, Sept. 18, at 1 a.m. (ET/PT). The series follows the adventures of the Goldberg family as they share the ups and downs of life together in the ‘80s. Following the series launch, the four-season, 95-episode library of The Goldbergs will continue to air daily at 1 a.m. (ET/PT) on Nick at Nite.
Nick at Nite, Nickelodeon’s nighttime programming block featuring hit family comedies, is currently the number-one cable network with W18-49, a position it has held for the last five consecutive months (April-August 2017). The Goldbergs, ABC’s hit show that ranks number one in its time period for A18-49 across both broadcast and cable, is the latest series to join the Nick at Nite lineup which also includes the Emmy Award-winning series Friends, as well as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Full House and George Lopez.
In The Goldbergs, there was a simpler time called the ’80s–before there were parenting blogs, trophies for showing up and peanut allergies. For geeky and movie obsessed youngest child Adam (Sean Giambrone), these were his wonder years, and he faced them armed with a video camera to capture all the crazy. The Goldbergs are a loving family like any other–just with a lot more yelling. Mom Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey) is a classic “smother,” an overbearing, overprotective matriarch who loves her delicious kids, but still rules this brood with 100% authority and zero sense of boundaries. Dad Murray (Jeff Garlin) is gruff and sometimes oblivious, parenting with half his attention span but all his heart. Sister Erica (Hayley Orrantia) is popular and terrifying, doing her best to cover up that she’s the smartest of the clan. Barry (Troy Gentile) is a passionate dreamer, who maybe dreams a little too big and who always gets the short end of the stick. Adam (Sean Giambrone) is the youngest, a camera-wielding future director who’s navigating first love, and growing up with his family. Rounding out the family is beloved grandfather Al “Pops” Solomon (George Segal), the wild man of the clan, a shameless Don Juan who’s learning as much from his family as he teaches them.
The Goldbergs stars Wendi McLendon-Covey (Bridesmaids) as Beverly Goldberg, Sean Giambrone as Adam Goldberg, Troy Gentile (Good Luck Chuck) as Barry Goldberg, Hayley Orrantia (The X Factor) as Erica Goldberg, with George Segal (Just Shoot Me) as Pops Solomon and Jeff Garlin (Curb Your Enthusiasm) as Murray Goldberg.
Adam F. Goldberg, Doug Robinson, Alex Barnow, Marc Firek, Lew Schneider, Chris Bishop, David Guarascio and Andy Secunda are executive producers. The Goldbergs is produced by Happy Madison and Adam F. Goldberg Productions, in association with Sony Pictures Television.

NICKELODEON WELCOMES THE GOLDBERGS
TO NICK AT NITE’S FAMILY COMEDY LINEUP
BEGINNING MONDAY, SEPT.

Nickelodeon USA Premieres "Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library", Original TV Movie Based On Best-Selling Book, Monday, Oct. 9, At 7:00 P.M. (ET/PT)
Original Nickelodeon USA Press Release:
Share it: @Nickelodeon #MrLemoncellosLibrary
BURBANK–Sept. 7, 2017–Nickelodeon will premiere a new original TV movie, Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library, based on author Chris Grabenstein’s acclaimed children’s book of the same name, on Monday, Oct. 9, at 7:00 (ET/PT). Nickelodeon stars Casey Simpson (Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn) and Breanna Yde (Nickelodeon’s School of Rock) join Russell Roberts (The Twilight Saga: New Moon) and newcomers AJ Rivera and Klarke Pipkin in the fantastical adventure about a group of friends whose overnight stay in their town’s new high-tech library turns into a daring, dangerous adventure of escape. The book, originally published in 2013 by Random House Children’s Books, boasts a 109-week run on the New York Times Best-Seller list.
World-renowned gamemaker Luigi Lemoncello (Russell Roberts) has built his latest creation--a new state-of-the-art library filled with whimsical and eccentric rooms, where hardcover books fly kids to shelves in the sky, and massive doors open into fantastical worlds. Kyle Keeley, Lemoncello’s biggest fan, is chosen to be one of the first to experience the fun, along with his best friend Akimi, a bookworm named Sierra (Klarke Pipkin), a goofball named Andrew Peckleman (A.J. Luis Rivera Jr.), his rival Charles Chiltington (Ty Nicolas Consiglio), and others. The kids must use their wits to complete riddles and collect clues that lead them out of this unique playground of imagination. When excitement turns to jeopardy, this world of wonder begins to spiral out of control as literary characters run amok and chaos ensues. It’s up to the kids to make everything right again or else they won’t be the only ones escaping.
Nickelodeon’s original TV movies are a key part of the network’s content mix, creating vehicles for Nickelodeon’s stars to be seen in new and different roles and stories. Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library joins Nickelodeon’s original TV movie slate, which includes three upcoming original TV movies--Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie and Tiny Christmas, both set to premiere this fall and Blurt starring Henry Danger’s Jace Norman and internet sensation JoJo Siwa, scheduled to air early 2018.
Join in on the adventure by using ##MrLemoncellosLibrary and following @Nickelodeon on Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter for movie updates and sneak peeks.
Chris Grabenstein’s novels with Random House Children’s Books have more than one million copies in print and hundreds of weeks combined on the New York Times bestseller list. Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library has spent over 100 weeks on the bestseller list, received nominations for 42 state award lists, and is published in 19 countries and in 19 languages throughout the world. Grabenstein's additional middle-grade novels include Mr. Lemoncello’s Library Olympics, The Island of Dr. Libris, Welcome to Wonderland: Home Sweet Motel, Welcome to Wonderland: Beach Party Surf Monkey, and the forthcoming third Lemoncello Book, Lemoncello’s Great Library Race, which will be published on Oct. 10.
Jim Head, Scott McAboy and Michael Sammaciccia serve as executive producers. Amy Sydorick serves as producer. The TV movie is written by Brian Jarvis & Jim Freeman and Alex Reid, and was directed by Scott McAboy (Splitting Adam).
