‘Move It, Football Head!’: Secrets From the Creator of ‘Hey Arnold!’
If the phrase “football head” brings a nostalgic smile to your face, you’re probably a child of the ‘90s who loves Hey Arnold! as much as NickALive! does. Great Big Story were lucky enough to sit down with the show's creator, Craig Bartlett, to talk all things Arnold ahead of our favorite cartoon 4th grader’s return to TV in Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie (spoiler: Arnold’s no longer in 4th grade now). Find out what inspired Arnold’s iconic football head, the real story behind “Pigeon Man,” and who influenced the look of TV’s coolest cartoon bedroom!:
More, via Konbini:
'Hey Arnold!' Was Actually Inspired By The Work Of Gabriel García Márquez
As you all already know, Nickelodeon will soon be releasing the long-awaited Hey Arnold! movie. This highly-anticipated project will bring back a beloved 90's animated series that marked a whole generation.
News surrounding our beloved 'Football Head' has gotten so much attention as of lately, that after all these years, we've learned some new details about its creation.
Craig Bartlett, the series creator, revealed that he took his inspiration from One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera, both written by celebrated Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez.
This is what Bartlett shared with Great Big Story:
“We were reading these works by Gabriel García Márquez. Those were big influences on us, because magic realism is the term coined about García Márquez’s writing.
I wanted there to be a magical realism to Arnold’s house and his neighborhood.”
This reference came up as Bartlett was discussing how he got the inspiration to create Arnold's incredible room in the attic and the rest of his surrounding city.
So in reality, it looks like we should thank García Márquez and magical realism for the existence of Pigeon Man, Stoop Kid and the other endlessly memorable characters birthed from Hey Arnold!'s world.

Mall of America Temporarily Closes TMNT Ride At Nickelodeon Universe After Ohio State Fair Accident
The Mall of America has temporarily closed down one of its amusement rides in the wake of a fatal accident involving a similar ride in Ohio this week.
Mall officials said Thursday afternoon that the Shredder’s Mutant Masher ride at Nickelodeon Universe was closed as a precaution pending further inspection.
The decision came after one person was killed and several were injured when the Fire Ball ride broke apart Wednesday at the Ohio State Fair.
The Mall of America said in a statement that its rides are inspected daily.
“Mall of America holds itself to the highest standards,” the statement read. “Our ride will remain inactive until we’ve been given appropriate clearance by our manufacturer.”
The Dutch company KMG, which manufactured the Ohio Fire Ball ride, instructed all 43 versions of the ride around the world to be shut down Thursday. The company said there are 11 such rides in the United States.
The Mall of America’s Mutant Masher was manufactured by the Kansas-based Chance Rides. The company obtained a license from KMG years ago to build a similar ride, according to Jeff Roth, Vice President of administration for Chance.
But Roth stressed that the Mall of America’s ride had little chance of malfunctioning as the Ohio ride did, because the chairs connect to the ride’s metal arms more securely than in KMG’s original design.
“The potential for failure on the Mall of America ride is nonexistent because of its dissimilarity from the Fire Ball ride in Ohio,” Roth said. He called the designs “entirely different.”
The Mutant Mashers attraction came to the mall in 2015, replacing the Danny Phantom Ghost Zone ride. It is one of nine of thrill rides at the park. The mall has 27 total rides.
The ride functions as a giant pendulum, spinning and swinging riders more than 60 feet in the air. The attraction is inspired by Nickelodeon's hit Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series.
Also, from StarTribune.com:
Mall of America shuts down popular ride following Ohio State Fair incident
Mall officials said they did not know when the ride will reopen.
The Mall of America on Thursday shut down a popular ride similar to one that flew apart at the Ohio State Fair on Wednesday, killing one person and injuring seven.
The Shredder’s Mutant Masher was taken out of service as a precautionary move, MOA representatives said in a statement. Crews will perform additional inspections on the ride, which will be idle until the mall gets approval from the manufacturer, Chance Rides Inc.
“They have advised all customers to take all versions of this ride out of service while additional inspections can be completed,” according to the mall’s statement.
Shedder’s Mutant Masher has design features similar to those on the Fire Ball, a 40-foot structure that broke up during the Ohio State Fair’s opening day. Video from the scene showed the ride crashing into something while in operation, breaking apart and hurtling riders into the air and ground.
An 18-year-old man died after he was thrown off the ride. Others remained in critical condition as of Wednesday night.
Shredder’s Mutant Masher is one of many rides in the Nickelodeon Universe amusement park at MOA. Like Fire Ball, it spins riders while swinging back and forth like a pendulum.
Mall representatives said Shredder’s Mutant Masher is different from a portable model like Fire Ball, and the two rides also have different manufacturers.
“Out of due diligence, Mall of America will keep our ride out of service until we have been given appropriate clearance by Chance Rides, Inc.,” according to the statement.

Time to Say Goodbye: Nickelodeon's 'The Thundermans' Is Officially Coming to an End
The Thundermans is officially ending. After reaching the milestone of filming more than 100 episodes, Nickelodeon's series about everyone's fave superhero family is over. The network released a statement to J-14, expressing just how much they will always appreciate the show.
UPDATE: Filming for The Thundermans has wrapped. :( Click here to view photos from the last days of filming, taken by the shows stars.
"After four amazing seasons and 103 episodes, Nickelodeon's landmark series, The Thundermans, has wrapped production. We are incredibly proud of our dedicated and talented cast and crew, who have helped make the show one of Nick’s longest-running live-action sitcoms. Premieres will continue to air throughout 2018," the statement from Nickelodeon reads.
The cast has made it clear since filming of Season 4 began that they too were unclear about the what the fate of the show was going to be, but now they have been slowing taking to social media to share their goodbye messages.
Kira Kosarin let everyone know the final table read with the whole cast was already getting her super emotional.
Same here! Diego Velazquez shared a pic of the whole family together doing a bow after a taping writing, "family...forever" in the caption.
"In honor of filming our last episode this week, here's a throwback to the pilot episode of the #Thundermans.," she wrote in the caption.
Jack Griffo started his goodbye to the show last week, posting a photo of some of his castmates all smiles as they filmed their last scene at Splatburger, which any fan of the show knows that's the place all the characters have created some memories each season. Seriously, there have been a ton of dates there!
"my fam🔥 I remember watching the thundermans before I even auditioned for NRDD. you guys have given a killer 4+ year run, and i'm so proud of you all😉 cant wait to see what wonderful things you will do in the future💗 I will miss you guyss >^<," Lizzy wrote.

Off to our final Thundermans table read... ready for lots of emotions this week

And even other members of the Nickelodeon family are getting all sentimental about the series ending. So nice to know NickALive! isn't the only ones out here. Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn star Lizzy Greene shared her own precious pics along with Addison and Diego, writing just how much she's going to miss seeing her buds every day while they're all working.A post shared by Jack Griffo (@jackgriffo) on

OK for real, now I'm starting to tear up. But there's still plenty of Thundermans episodes left to air that you'll see on your TV screens into next year. Plus, they did film the Thunder In Paradise movie that aired back in June which was all types of epic, so it's safe to say this show will for sure go out with a bang when it does come to its conclusion. The whole cast and crew should be nothing but proud!

Welcome to the Wayne’s new TV world | Nickelodeon
Creatively speaking, you can say that the linear-TV arrival of Welcome to the Wayne — Nickelodeon’s first digital short to be adapted for the small screen — has been a long time coming.
Originally greenlit for a TV series in April 2015, the animated series created by Billy Lopez (Peg + Cat) and executive produced by Michael Pecoriello (Yu-Gi-Oh!) made its premiere this week, as Nickelodeon—and its competitors like Disney and Cartoon Network—continue to mine inspiration from the digital realm.
While Nick remains tight-lipped on how many views the six x 3.5-minute original Welcome to the Wayne digital shorts, which launched on Nick.com in 2014, racked up online and on the Nick App, the kidsnet is clear about its plans to excite traditional TV viewers about serialized content.
“With the launch of Welcome to the Wayne as a TV show, we’re really going beyond the online audience space,” Lopez told Kidscreen. “We’re very excited for any fans who watched it and can appreciate this as the next step in the adventures of these characters. But we’ve also made sure that anybody can start without having seen the digital series.”
The new 20-episode show follows a serialized mystery arc where its main characters are trying to figure out why their apartment building, the Wayne, is so strange. The cast includes Alanna Ubach (Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce) as 10-year-old Ansi, the anxious new kid in town; Lopez as Olly Timbers, the adventurous son of a toymaker; and Dana Steingold (Avenue Q musical) as his sister Saraline.
“One of our big challenges was making a show that’s serialized and hooks you in for a long mystery. But it’s also built to exist as a stand-alone story, and kids can tune into episode 15 not having seen one through 14 and really enjoy it,” says Pecoriello.
“There have been lots of little tricks we’ve tried to use to sneak in exposition points and drop enough threads throughout each episode that can be answered for viewers who have been following it seriously,” adds Lopez. “We’re doing our best to have it both ways.”
Nickelodeon is also positioning the show to be its next fan-favorite, says Pecoriello. To that end, the kidsnet looked to drum up excitement by sending Lopez to San Diego Comic-Con last week, where he was a part of a Nickelodeon signing that included Butch Hartman (Fairly OddParents, Bunsen is a Beast, Danny Phantom, T.U.F.F. Puppy) and Chris Savino (The Loud House).
“I was sitting between two people whose shows are very popular, and no one had even seen mine yet,” says Lopez.
But that’s now all changed. Welcome to the Wayne premiered new episodes this week Monday to Friday at 5:30 p.m., right after hit series The Loud House. Repeats will air on Saturday mornings at 10:30 am following SpongeBob SquarePants until September, at which time it will have a second premiere week with new episodes.
“The time schedule was basically Nickelodeon saying this is the next exciting thing,” says Pecoriello. “All the groups at Nickelodeon, from games to social media, have given us so much support over the last two months to get brand-new kids who have never heard of it super pumped. Digital was just the tip of what this show is and can be. It is so rich and lends itself to not only multiple seasons (fingers crossed) but it also has the makings of a franchise that can extend into all sorts of things, including books and toys.”
Currently, there are a number of games on Nick.com and the Nick App based on Welcome to the Wayne, with talks about making a standalone app and consumer products line in the future.

JoJo Bows Star Causes A MASSIVE Frenzy In Birmingham As She Meets Hundreds Of Fans
Hundreds of youngsters and their parents formed huge queues in Birmingham on Wednesday to meet the American star behind the JoJo Bows craze!

Devoted followers of JoJo Siwa rushed to the Birmingham Bullring shopping centre to see the 14-year-old internet sensation who had flown over from Omaha, Nebraska, on her first visit to the UK.
Alisha Hobbs, aged 12, and Jasmine Chapman, aged six. from Newport came to Birmingham to meet JoJo Siwa (Image: Birmingham Mail)
Fans of the star - known as Siwanators - had to buy a bow at Claire's accessories store in the Bullring to get one of 250 coveted wristbands entitling them to a meet and greet at a specially-branded double decker bus in St Martin's Square.
Many shoppers wondered what was going on as queues of children, all wearing the oversized bows, formed at the shop and at the bus.
JoJo was in the city from 1pm to 3.30pm, posing for photographs with those who were lucky enough to meet her in person.

Some families arrived very early in the morning to be first to get a bow and wristband when Claire's opened especially early at 7am.
And they weren't just from Birmingham but from all over the UK.
Among them was superfan Leah-Jade Davies from Cardiff, who was bedecked in a cascade of big colourful bows clipped all the way down through her hair.
One girl even came all the way from Dubai! Imaan Malik, aged nine, had flown in from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) just to see her idol.

JoJo Siwa rose to fame through the popular TV reality series Dance Moms - following a group of young competitive dancers and their equally competitive mothers. She now interacts with her fans through social media platforms.
JoJo has more than 5.8 million followers on Instagram, 11.4 million followers on Music.ly and 600 million views on her YouTube channel, as well as having talent and a global consumer products deals with Nickelodeon.
The youngster has already released three pop songs and has now expanded her accessories range to include keyrings, jewellery, watches and cosmetics.
The giant bows became so popular in the UK that several schools banned them, saying they didn't comply with rules on uniforms.
Claire’s has previously organised meet and greets with JoJo Siwa in the USA, visiting Chicago, Miami and Minnesota.
Hind Palmer, global brand marketing and communications director for Claire's, told the Birmingham Mail: "Claire's couldn't be more pleased at the successful outcome of the Birmingham Meet and Greet with JoJo Siwa.
"Her fans were thrilled to meet her and couldn't contain their excitement!
"We look forward to our continued thriving partnership with JoJo Siwa and Nickelodeon."
JoJo Siwa was also in Manchester earlier this week, where she told the Manchester Evening News: "This is my first time in the UK and it definitely feels like a foreign country to me, but I really love it here.
"I got to meet so many people, everyone was so nice, and I think I almost had a British accent by the end!
"I have loved bows my whole life, so we just said ‘why not do bows?’ and they have been really successful which is amazing.
"It is so cool seeing people wearing them in the street. I knew people would like them because I like them so much, but I didn’t know they would love them so much."

Nickelodeon Star JoJo Siwa Opens Up About Cyber Bullying On ITV's "This Morning" | Nickelodeon UK
JoJo Siwa appeared on ITV's mid-morning magazine series This Morning as part of Nickelodeon star's first visit to the UK!
Eamonn Holmes questioned This Morning guest JoJo Siwa whether she had drunk a 'lot of fizzy drinks' during her energetic appearance on the show
JoJo Siwa, 14 who first found fame on US show Dance Moms alongside her mother Jessalyn, bounded into the This Morning studio to talk about her career and as well as being cyber bullied.
During the appearance, Eamonn Holmes asked the social media sensation whether they had consumed a lot of 'sugary drinks' following their energetic appearance on the show.
JoJo Siwa is a huge online sensation after first finding fame on US reality programme Dance Moms alongside her own mother Jessalyn
But the interview was so fast-paced it lead the presenter to ask: 'On telly you've got all this great energy and you sing and you dance, just energy, energy, energy and there's a lot of happiness and positivity there.
The youngster, who has two YouTube channels with over three million followers and 600million views, an Instagram account with six million followers and a regular stint on Nickelodeon, laughed in response.
'I don’t. People call me energy in a bottle. It is literally always like this. But when I’m done I sleep.'
The dancer and singer says that because she is home-schooled she doesn't witness 'in-person bullying', instead she has been the victim of cyberbullying
Viewers were left equally flabbergasted by the youngsters unfaltering energy levels taking to Twitter to share their thoughts.
User Charlotte wrote: 'omg jojo on this morning how does she have so much energy (sic)'
While Lauren C Wallace added: 'Jheeze that JoJo is so full of energy #thismorning'.
But despite her popularity, the home-schooled teen style icon revealed she has been the victim of online bullying.
JoJo explained: 'They can just comment "you're fat", "you're ugly", "you're weird", "I hate you", "you're a brat" and "you're annoying".'
The enthusiastic youngster continued: 'It's just terrible. It's so mean that someone can just comment. You don't even know who it is half the time.
'I think it is not okay, I just want to end it and make people feel good about themselves.'

Team Timbers Welcomes Andrew Rannells To The Wayne - Watch Clip | Welcome To The Wayne | Nickelodeon
Andrew Rannells‘ newest character is certainly memorable — even if he can’t seem to remember himself.
The Girls star is lending his voice to Nickelodeon's newest animated series Welcome to the Wayne, and TVLine has unveiled a fantastic first look at his scatterbrained role!
Welcome to the Wayne follows the exploits of three adventurous kids as they navigate the Wayne, their mysterious apartment building “where nothing is what it seems.” Rannells’ character, Andrei, is the gang’s new neighbor “with no memory of who he is or where he came from.” (Could a clue to Andrei’s past lie in the episode’s equally mysterious title, “Some Kind of Tap-Dancing, Beekeeping Whaler”? Honestly, who knows.)
Rannells’ first episode airs Friday 28th July 2017 at 5:30/4:30c on Nickelodeon USA. Drop a comment with your thoughts below!

Alchemy Post Sound Steps Up Its Game with Nickelodeon's "Welcome to the Wayne"
Original Alchemy Post Sound Press Release via SHOOTonline.com:
Westchester, NY --(SPW)-- The animated series Welcome to the Wayne recently debuted on Nickelodeon, becoming the network’s first original series to move from digital to broadcast, having originally launched in 2014 as a series of shorts on Nick App and Nick.com. Created by Billy Lopez, the show centers on two 10-year-old boys living in a Manhattan high-rise, dubbed The Wayne, where they are involved in all manner of wild adventures.
The show’s sound team, led by supervising sound editor Bobb Barito, re-recording mixer Matt Longoria and the Foley team from Alchemy Post Sound, have a lot to do with bringing the fantastically crazy world inhabited by the boys to life. They are charged with coming up with a cornucopia of sounds to support the show’s loopy characters, eccentric environments and oddball gadgets. Considerable care is given to each detail of the soundscape, right down to the idiosyncratic footsteps made by the principal characters.
“The show has so many colors and there’s so much going on in each episode that it’s hard to sum up as just one thing,” says Barito. “We have monsters, gadgets, machines…it’s everything from big, cinematic action scenes to slapstick humor. We mesh it all together into a coherent sound design that helps tell and elevate the story.”
Even for an animated series, Welcome to the Wayne features an unusual number of custom sound effects. Barito says that he particularly enjoys inventing sounds for the makeshift tools and devices that are a signature element of the show. “The kids are involved in solving mysteries and they use gadgets that are all toy-based,” Barito explains. “One character has this funny grappling hook. We didn’t want it to sound too heavy or high tech, so we used comical ratchet sounds. Another character, Saraline, has a device called Snatch Adams that grabs objects using a pair of retractable claws. We used actual toy sounds for that.”
Sound is also used to subtly evoke the show’s New York City location. “The producers really wanted you to feel like you’re in a high-rise in the middle of Manhattan,” Barito notes. “In the Wayne, there’s this portal; people get sucked in and sent someplace new. We used New York City subway sounds for that. You can hear clattering metal as characters move through the portal, and the subway’s signature ‘ding’ when they arrive.”
Most unusual for a cartoon is Welcome to the Wayne’s heavy use of Foley sounds, created by the Emmy Award-winning crew from Alchemy Post Sound. Among other things, Foley artists Joanna Fang and Foley mixer Nick Seaman create individualized footsteps for every character.
“One way we wanted to make the show sound special was by giving each character a signature footstep,” explains Fang. “Ansi is bookish and meek, so his footsteps are disciplined and formal, whereas Olly and Saraline run around in squeaky Reeboks. Their personalities are reflected in their footsteps.”
Fang points to another character, Wendell, who walks around in cheap flipflops. “We have a nice pair of squeaky shoes for that, but it became a question of ‘how much squeak do you want?’” she recalls. “In order to control it, we throw baby powder on the floor. That creates just the right amount of slip resistance.”
Getting the Foley effects just right is important, adds Seaman, because they are featured prominently in the finished mix. “All of the dialogue is recorded in a studio, so it’s super dry,” he notes. “When you add the Foley, it sits right there with the dialogue, and if it’s not right, it’s obvious.”
That’s not to say that the Foley effects are always exact representations of what’s happening on the screen. A degree of artistic license is involved. “We perform every single footstep with picture, but staying in sync isn’t necessarily the best idea. Sometimes, you have to break the sync, cheat a footstep, to give it an extra bit of pizzazz and help sell the joke. It’s a funny show, so there is a certain amount of goofiness in everything we do.”
Barito, for one, appreciates the extra effort. “Every time I get the Foley back from Alchemy, it’s like Christmas morning,” he says. “They create distinct footsteps for each character. Sometimes it’s subtle and sometimes it’s hilarious. Wendell walking in his flipflops is very funny. You couldn’t do that with a stock sound effect. That’s Foley.”
