Viacom In “Advanced Discussions” For $20/Month Entertainment TV Bundle

Viacom and other entertainment-focused programmers are in “very advanced discussions” with cable and satellite companies to offer a bundle without news and sports costing $20 or less a month — and it will “come to life this calendar year” — Bob Bakish, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Viacom, told investors this morning at the JPMorgan Tech, Media and Telecom Conference, reports Deadline.

“That will be a very exciting development in the marketplace, and is a very positive development for Viacom” the CEO says. His networks including Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and BET “have the largest share of viewing on pay TV for every demographic that we serve.”

But they’re priced low enough so that “you can offer that, and a few of our competitors, and still be at this very low price point.”

AMC Networks and Discovery Communications have also been talking to distributors about a low priced package that would include their channels — but not expensive sports networks such as Disney's ESPN.

Two weeks ago Discovery CEO David Zaslav forecast an entertainment-only bundle that might cost about $10, which he described as “a true skinny bundle in the spirit of what’s working around the world.”

Disney’s Bob Iger scoffed that such a low priced package probably would not include “any channels that were particularly attractive…I don’t see how that would be practical in terms of gaining much penetration.”

But new offerings with broadcast channels and sports that can cost about $40 a month — including Sling TV, DirecTV Now, and Hulu With Live TV — “are not well configured for driving incremental penetration,” Bakish says.

The price is “highly unlikely to bring in a cord never millennial,” he adds. “It might cause someone to churn down in terms of price…So that’s not the transformational opportunity.”

A much lower priced, entry level package could “be a path to bring someone in that wants high quality entertainment” and could either trade up from, or trade down to, “as the household needs change.”

He sees a drop in the number of subscribers paying $100 or more a month for the expanded basic bundle. Although there will be a $40 or so mid-tier offering “that’s not economically sustainable,” Bakish says. Those selling such a package now “say things like, ‘It’s very difficult to make money here’ — which is code for losing money on a variable basis.”

The bigger-than-expected drop in pay TV subscribers in Q1 might have reflected the end of the discounts that Time Warner Cable offered to boost its subscriber numbers while it was preparing for the deal to sell itself to Charter Communications.

“You may have had a situation where there was a larger sub base than there should have been,” Bakish says. “That got churned out as people focused on a quality on-going business.” He expects sub declines to “return to a more modest level.”

More broadly, Bakish says he’s looking to improve Viacom’s relationships with cable and satellite distributors which over the last few years became “a little bit frayed.”

He noted, for example, that under his predecessor, Philippe Dauman, some of “our largest and most important customers had inferior rights grants from a Viacom perspective to smaller [subscription video on demand] players. Think about that for a second. That doesn’t make any sense. But that’s where we were.”

Bakish has been trying to address that by revising carriage deals before they expire. “One of the things we’re focused on is broadening the relationship so it’s not just a brain damaged, zero-sum game negotiation about cost.”

For example, he says, two distributors now use Viacom's Vantage data to help local ad buyers target their sales pitches.

He noted that his company has “noise issues” with Charter — which has moved some Viacom channels to extra-cost tiers for new customers. “That’s something we firmly believe they don’t have the rights to do,” he says. “We’ve got to get that resolved.” But that’s “an outlier.”

Nickelodeon Benelux Debuts New Game Show "Snap het"

Who has the sharpest eyes and fastest brains, the Dutch or the Belgians? You'll find out in Snap het Nickelodeon Benelux's brand-new game show for kids, which premiered today at 19:00 on Nickelodeon Netherlands (Nederland) and Nickelodeon Belgium (België)! Hosted by Iris Hesseling (Zomer vol Slime) and Stef Poelmans (Nickelodeon Kids’Choice Awards 2017), Snap het will continue to air weekdays at 19:00 on Nickelodeon Nederland and Nickelodeon België.


Snap het is all about pictures! Each episode of Snap het will pit a team of Dutch kids against a team of Belgian kids. In each round, teams have to guess who or what is behind a distorted photo, faded or edited picture, and which Nickelodeon star is featured in slime, with the fastest team winning the point. The team with the most points continues to the final round, where they have the chance to win lots of prizes.

Viewers can also play at home by sharing their snaps via Instagram by tagging @nickelodeonnederland of @nickelodeonvlaanderen and using the hashtag #snaphet. Who knows, you might see your photo in an upcoming episode of Snap het!

This "My Super Sweet 16" Birthday Boy Had A Nickelodeon Star On His Arm

Actor and musician Noah Urrea felt triple the pressure during last nights My Super Sweet 16 episode. Not only did the birthday boy choose to throw an epic bash, he combined the party with the release of his new album Always AND made his grand entrance with friend and Nickelodeon star Brec Bassinger of the hit shows Bella and the Bulldogs and School of Rock!


Noah's goal? To evolve from a "young Nickelodeon kid" to a solo musician -- aka the next Justin Timberlake -- by performing on the stage of the iconic Hollywood nightclub Avalon during his bash. "It has to be perfect," a nervous Noah said.

The budding singer enlisted Brec to help him nail his look for the evening, settling on two styles (because every party needs an outfit change): a black leather jacket for his arrival (in a vintage red Mustang, no less) and a navy velvet tuxedo that would make JT proud.


"I thought the other one was Justin Timberlake, but this one is even more Justin Timberlake," Brec stated, referring to the soon-to-be 16-year-old's choice in performance attire.

Despite a series of rocky rehearsals and a lost mic minutes before his set, Noah's show went off without a hitch in front of a packed audience of over 550 friends, fans and industry insiders, including other Nickelodeon stars Ava Cantrell of The Haunted Hathaways, School of Rock's Lance Lim, as well as stars such as Rebecca Bloom of Masha and The Bear and The Mick's Thomas Barbusca. Even better, Noah's parents gifted him with the guitar of his dreams — a shiny black and white Fender — and the birthday boy proclaimed it the best day of his entire life.

Like his BFF, Noah is no stranger to Nickelodeon fans, having appeared on popular Nick sitcoms Sam & Cat and See Dad Run.

Nickelodeon Iberia To Premiere "Bunsen Is A Beast" On Monday 12th June 2017

A beast and a human form an unlikely friendship in Nickelodeon's newest animated series Bunsen is a Beast, premiering Monday 12th June 2017 at 19:40 on Nickelodeon Portugal and 20:40 on Nickelodeon Spain (España)! Created and executive produced by Butch Hartman (The Fairly OddParents/Los Padrinos Mágicos (ES)/Os Padrinhos Mágicos (PT)), the 20-episode series, locally titled Bunsen es una bestia in Spain, follows the adventures of Bunsen, the first beast to attend a human grade school, and his best friend Mikey.

With help from Mikey, Bunsen will learn how to accomplish human world tasks, like, doing homework, eating ice cream, and riding the bus. In turn, Mikey will learn to navigate the Beast World and meet all the weird and wonderful beasts that reside there.

In the series premiere, "Bearly Acceptable Behavior," Amanda tries to get Bunsen kicked out of school when he brings a dangerous bear to class. Next during, "Beast Busters," Bunsen and Mikey have to save Amanda from mischievous Sneeze Beasts that escape from Bunsen's nose.

The voice cast of the US-English dub of Bunsen is a Beast includes: Jeremy Rowley (iCarly) as Bunsen, the first beast ever to attend a middle school for human kids; Ben Giroux (Henry Danger) as Mikey, a sweet and quirky kid and Bunsen’s best friend; Cristina Milizia (Monster High) as Darcy, Bunsen and Mikey's homeschooled friend; Kari Wahlgren (The Fairly OddParents) as Amanda Killman, the rigid and rule bound beast hater; comedy legend Cheri Oteri (Saturday Night Live) as Miss Flap, Mikey and Bunsen's eccentric teacher; Jeff Bennett (Jake and the Neverland Pirates) as Bunsen's Dad; and Jennifer Hale (The Powerpuff Girls) as Bunsen's Mom. Bunsen is a Beast is produced by Nickelodeon in Burbank, which officially opened the doors to its newly expanded building -- an over 200,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art, sustainable complex on January 11.

Hartman began his animation career as an assistant animator on An American Tail. He created his own shorts for What a Cartoon!, and also wrote and directed episodes of Dexter's Laboratory, Cow & Chicken and Johnny Bravo. Bunsen is a Beast marks Hartman’s fourth animated series for Nickelodeon. Hartman joined Nickelodeon in 1998 where he created and produced several cartoon shorts for the Oh Yeah! Cartoons series, including The Fairly OddParents. Commemorating the 10th anniversary of the animated series, Hartman brought the series to life in the 2010 live-action/CG animated hit TV movie, A Fairly OddMovie: Grow Up, Timmy Turner! The series came to life once again in the original TV movie, A Fairly Odd Christmas in 2012 and A Fairly OddSummer in 2014. Hartman is also the creator of Nickelodeon's animated series Danny Phantom and T.U.F.F. Puppy.


In addition to his work with Nickelodeon, Hartman has also created the Noog Network, a mobile app that features interactive games, cartoons and live shows. “I kind of never stop. I never sleep. I just like to draw and put ideas down. And every idea that Nickelodeon doesn’t buy I put on the Noog Network,” explains Hartman. He notes that Noog is a good place to try out new ideas and see how they go over in a short amount of time.

Nickelodeon’s brand-new animated preschool series, Nella the Princess Knight, follows Nella, an unconventional 8-year-old who possesses the royal qualities of a princess, like compassion and grace, while also embodying the courage and determination of a brave knight. Whenever a problem arises, Nella embarks on daring quests to save her kingdom through her unique ability to transform from a princess into Nella the Princess Knight. Nella the Princess Knight (40 half-hour episodes) features a social-emotional curriculum promoting self-confidence, inclusiveness and compassion for others. The series will premiere on the Nickelodeon channel on Monday, 29 May at 10am (MY), 9am (WIB) and 11.30am (PH); and on the Nick Jr. channel on Monday, 26 June at 9am (MY/WIB/PH).

Nella is a confident princess who likes dancing at extravagant balls just as much as she likes meeting fire-breathing dragons. She transcends traditional roles and expectations through her ability to change into Nella the Princess Knight, protecting her kingdom with the help of her friends: Trinket, Nella’s glamorous unicorn and best friend; Sir Garrett, a loyal and adventurous knight; and Clod, Garrett’s trusty steed.


In the series premiere, “Sir Clod/Up All Knight,” Clod loses his invitation to the Royal Cafe Breakfast Buffet and must find it by lunchtime or everyone misses out. Under Nella’s leadership, they brave Gotcha Falls, dodge through a field of poppleberries and traverse the bubbly Sudsycano in order to find it. Also in the episode, a luminous phoenix shines brightly across the kingdom causing Blaine and the rest of Castlehaven to lose sleep. After the phoenix is locked up in the knight brigade tower, Nella must use her knightly skills to free the bird and convince everyone to come together as a group to solve their problem.


Robert Vargas (head writer, Zack and Quack) serves as an executive producer on Nella the Princess Knight and the series is created by Christine Ricci (curriculum advisor, Blaze and the Monster Machines, Dora the Explorer). It is the newest show to join Nick’s top-ranked preschool roster, airing alongside hit series like PAW Patrol, Blaze and the Monster Machines and Shimmer and Shine.

Nickelodeon And Wonderland Team Up For SpongeBob Gold Activation

To celebrate the launch of the brand-new SpongeBob Gold fashion collection, Nickelodeon has teamed up with Wonderland magazine and store for a Sponge-Tastic themed activation!

The activation features a printing station, devised and delivered by experiential printing agency YR Live, which allows guests to design their own luxury merchandise. Using signature 27" touch screens and custom design software, visitors to the activation can choose from exclusive SpongeBob-themed artwork from the collection to create their own premium t-shirts, sweatshirts, iPhone cases and tote bags.

Having launched on Thursday 18th May 2017, consumers can visit the activation until Wednesday 31st May 2017 at the Wonderland store in Piccadilly, London. The shop has been kitted out with Spongebob Gold-themed decorations, and guests are able to pose for photo opportunities with a life-size Spongebob Gold character. Fans can also pick up items from Nickelodeon's bespoke SpongeBob Gold fashion collection.

Last month, Nick Jr. partnered with Intu shopping centres to create family experiences using augmented reality. This October, Nickelodeon's SlimeFest will return to Blackpool.

Part of a year-long SpongeBob Gold international campaign, the SpongeBob Gold fashion collection is an innovative collaboration with six international designers – Peter Jensen, Bobby Abley, Bad Denim, Salar, Maria Francesca Pepe and Suecomma Bonnie. Featuring clothing for men and women as well as footwear, accessories and jewellery, the SpongeBob Gold collection is inspired by Nickelodeon’s incurably optimistic and earnest sea sponge, SpongeBob SquarePants. Each item in the 27-piece collection features classic SpongeBob iconography embellished with a golden twist.


In addition to in-store availability at the Wonderland Shop in London, the SpongeBob Gold fashion collection will be available from UK fashion site Farfetch from the end of May. SpongeBob Gold designers will also make select products available for purchase through their websites this summer as well as in select international retailers. The SpongeBob Gold look book, featuring photography by Olivia Richardson and styling by Lucy Greene, is now available.


Across the next 12 months, Nickelodeon International will celebrate everything that makes SpongeBob one of the most iconic animated characters in the world: his humour, optimism and heart of gold. The campaign will include activations on-air, online, and on social media as well as additional product and retail launches.
