Original Wonder Media Press Release via PR Newswire:
Former "Rugrats" CEO Addresses Student Body at Okmulgee High School Auditorium on Tuesday at 9am on How the Habits of Mind and Story Maker Help At-Risk Students
OKMULGEE, Okla., Jan. 9, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- In the aftermath of the tragedies within the Okmulgee community over the holidays, the Okmulgee School District has invited Terry Thoren to address the Okmulgee student body on Tuesday at 9:00am at the Okmulgee High School Auditorium.
Terry Thoren was the former CEO of Klasky Csupo, Inc., the company that produced the Rugrats, The Wild Thornberrys and Rocket Power for Nickelodeon. He is now the CEO of Wonder Media, whose flagship product, Wonder Media Story Maker™, has had transformational effects on students within Okmulgee School District since its implementation this summer.
Renee Dove, Superintendent of Okmulgee School District, says that, "Mr. Thoren was originally scheduled to travel from Hollywood, California to personally train 25 elementary school teachers on the implementation of the Institute for Habits of Mind's Instructional Animations. But when I realized how magical it would be for the students to hear a message about how such habits like "Managing Impulsivity," "Persisting," "Listening with Understanding and Empathy" and "Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations" would help them find ways to be in control of their own lives, I asked him to present to the entire student body."
Thoren dedicated his career to producing character-education content for any child - especially those with literacy skills at risk. Schools use Story Maker™ to provide an authentic experience in which students write scripts, edit their work, and produce an animation for public consumption. Thoren's mission is to provide educators and parents with animation solutions that engage children in the classroom the same way they are entertained outside of the classroom. Students are so engaged with Story Maker™ that they do not want the school day to end. Thoren recollects a student saying, "I forgot to take time out to eat or use the restroom I was so excited about making an animation."
Why are kids getting so excited to learn? Story Maker™ transforms classrooms into animation studios where students assemble teams to take on roles in creative, technical, and managerial functions. In addition to literacy, participation in a Story Maker™ project develops 21st century skills including collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving. Using animated characters to create a genuine product for a real audience is a research-based education approach which uniquely appeals to students and, most importantly, ignites a hunger for knowledge that is unique in the classroom.
Upon accepting to speak to the Okmulgee student body Thoren says, "the irony of this situation is that, in the beginning, we produced the 16 Habits of Mind animation series with the intent to teach young children the skills necessary to manage the social issues arising in this unstable world we live in today. The vision was to help avoid the very tragedies that have shaken this community." The hope is that the Story Maker™, with the 16 Habits of Mind, will give the district tools to address these key issues.

Nickelodeon Australia has announced the exciting news in a post on their official Facebook profile page, facebook.com/NickelodeonAustralia, that Nickelodeon Australia and New Zealand will premiere the brand-new Make It Pop hour-long TV movie "Summer Splash" on Friday 13th January 2017 at 6:30pm, as part of Nickelodeon Summer Vibes!
True friendships are put to the test when Nickelodeon’s music-infused series Make It Pop returns with a one-hour TV event!
School’s out at MacKendrick Prep and XO-IQ band members Sun Hi (Megan Lee), Corki (Erika Tham), Jodi (Louriza Tronco) and DJ Caleb (Dale Whibley) are spending their summer at the world-famous Sparkview Resort after winning a spot as the hotel’s exclusive house band. Tempers flare and friendships are tested when the resort manager tries to steer the group in a new musical direction. But with the support and inspiration from some special guests, the band must find a way to put on the show of the summer.
Before the newest Red Power Ranger escaped to Earth with the Ninja Nexus Prism, he spent some time growing up in North Modesto, California.
Actor William Shewfelt, 21, recently visited his hometown this weekend, bringing his alma maters a you-can-do-it-too message and promoting the Jan. 21 debut of his character. Red Power Ranger Brody Romero arrives in the 24th season of Saban's iconic Power Rangers franchise, Power Rangers Ninja Steel on Nickelodeon USA.

On Thursday 5th January 2017, Shewfelt spoke to an assembly and signed autographs at Agnes Baptist Elementary, where he went to kindergarten toting a Red Power Ranger backpack. On Monday 9th January 2017, the former Panther gave a presentation at Modesto High.
On Friday 6th January 2017, he worked out with Prescott Junior High kids during PE and talked to college-aiming AVID students before also hosting an assembly there. All four Shewfelt kids went to Stanislaus Union schools. His younger sister is a seventh-grader at Prescott. His brother goes to Beyer High, and his older sister works for Modesto City Schools.
For the assembly, he made a Power Ranger cast shoutout to Prescott Junior High, part of a visit he said he hoped would inspire kids to reach higher.
“It’s a great motivating factor for students, who know he sat on the same benches we sit on today. He committed himself and worked hard,” said Prescott Principal Harjinder Mattu.

Many of the kids thronging around him seeking autographs said they were longtime fans of the show, or their younger brothers and sisters had watched it. A few said they had never seen it, but hey, he’s a star. Between classes, Shewfelt gamely signed binder paper, backpacks, smartphone cases, a math workbook, arms, and even one cheek.
“I love you!” called out a voice from a giggling group of girls dashing off to class.
“I watch it with my little sister. The Red Power Ranger is my favorite!” said eighth-grader Anisah Villegas before posing for a selfie with Shewfelt.
He is a celebrity now, but as a Prescott student – “I sure wasn’t,” he told the kids.
“But what’s interesting about that is that changes as you go through life,” he said, advising them to follow their passions. “If you give people love and value, and put out the best in you, then you become popular. People like you for whatever you do.”
“He was one of the shy kids, walking around with his head down,” recalled teacher David Bragga, who urged him to try out for a part in a school play. Shewfelt refused.
“He didn’t think he could do it,” Bragga said.

But the invitation stirred something, Shewfelt said: “Deep down I wanted to. It kind of lit a fire inside me.”
In his third year at the University of California, San Diego, dissatisfied with his economics major, he emailed Bragga about how to get started in theater. Success came before he finished his new major, putting off a degree for now, Shewfelt said.
He talked about his change of heart to kids also aspiring to being the first generation in their family to go to college.
“I think going to college was the best decision I ever made,” Shewfelt told them.
“Through being in college, I learned what I wanted and what I didn’t want to be,” he said. “It’s not just classes in college. You fully expand, in so many different ways.”
Work in college productions, connections made and bit parts led him to the Power Ranger audition.

“He was a hard worker. He was a blue trunk,” said gym teacher Kris Lindberg, referring to Prescott’s point-based gym short colors. Blue is the third rung of four, just below gold. Shewfelt wore a fresh pair of blue Prescott shorts to gym Friday, having grown in size as well as confidence since junior high.
“I was a little string bean noodle, super short,” Shewfelt said with a grin. With the gym class, he ran a 50-yard dash in 6.5 seconds, performed 20 pull-ups and two sets of six power-ups, lifting his full torso above the bar from a dead hang.
Power Rangers do mostly weight lifts, gymnastics and run as a standard workout, he said.
“We keep it really simple,” he added.

His top fitness priority is healthy eating – lots of vegetables with some fruit and a little meat.
He and the Power Rangers production crew spent the fall filming Season 24 in New Zealand, where the landscape best matches the show’s setting. On Jan. 15, he returns to New Zealand to shoot the second half of the Ninja Steel story arc through May. That will be the show’s 25th anniversary, airing in 2018 with guest appearances of the most popular past Rangers, Shewfelt said.
Power Rangers Ninja Steel starts deep in space, where Galvanax, the evil champion of the intergalactic game show, Galaxy Warriors, is sending his best warrior contestants to Earth to steal the mythical Ninja Power Stars made of ninja steel so he can rule the universe. Galvanax and monsters battle to prove who is the mightiest warrior. To become invincible, Galvanax must control the Ninja Power Stars.
To stop him and his warriors, a new team of five heroic teens has formed. With teamwork and great strength, the NINJA STEEL POWER RANGERS: Brody (Red Ranger), Preston (Blue Ranger, Peter Sudarso), Hayley (White Ranger, Zoe Robins), Calvin (Yellow Ranger, Chantz Simpson), and Sarah (Pink Ranger, Chrystiane Lopes) unite to eliminate the threat using new Ninja Powers, powerful weapons, and awesome Megazords made from legendary ninja steel. Together, the Power Rangers fight an epic battle to save the galaxy from destruction.
The Power Rangers stories run for two years each, most featuring all new crews. The bad guys, however, stick around, Shewfelt said. Covered in elaborate rubber body costumes and masks, most of the monster actors play their parts season after season.
“It’s really strange. One second I’m telling them off on the set. The next second we’re eating lunch together,” he said.
Before being cast as a Power Ranger, Shewfelt starred in the short dramatic film The Final Days of Elliot Morrison, about a man recounting his last year to a new friend shortly before his untimely death.
What will be next? Shewfelt said he will audition for roles, but his dream is to be cast for a film adaptation of The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.
Original Nickelodeon Africa Press Release via DStv:
Big names for NickFest
Take three very funny guys, add a huge dollop of sticky green slime, stir in thousands of kids and parents, music, activities and more - and you have the perfect recipe for NickFest 2017, South Africa’s biggest family-centric festival.
Japes, pranks, stunts, celebrity slimings, comic clowning around and inspired silliness galore will be the order of the day as Jason, Nicholas and Donovan Goliath take over the TicketPro Dome (Saturday 25 & Sunday 26 March), presenting a fantastic line-up of family friendly musicians, entertainers, activities and more, together with a fantastic co-host (to be revealed shortly).
Among the many kid-tastic attractions at NickFest will be the legendary Slime Area, a 625-metre square space where kids will be able to slither around, bathe, battle and shower in 10,000 litres of gloriously gooey slime. Don’t forget to bring a towel and a change of clothes - because there’s no way you’re getting out of here anything other than 100 percent slimed.
“Every comedian wants to get in touch with their inner child,” says Jason Goliath, “and what better way to let it out than by hosting NickFest 2017! It’s going to be like no other gig the Goliaths have ever done. They say kids can be a tough crowd so Donovan, Nicholas and I have been getting in shape by practising our family-friendly gags, hanging out with our Nickelodeon pals SpongeBob SquarePants, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Shimmer and Shine, and even getting slimed in preparation for the big day.”
Says Chris Torline, Director, Marketing and Digital Media, VIMN Africa: “We are excited to welcome Jason, Nicholas and Donovan on board for NickFest 2017. This dynamic trio combine world-class hosting skills, with an infectious sense of fun and amazing ad-libbing skills. We are certain that they will keep audiences thrilled over the two days of festivities, and leave our NickFest fans wanting more!”
Goliath & Goliath are among the most recognisable comedy entertainers in South Africa. In 2015, Jason Goliath (founder of Goliath & Goliath) was recognised as one of Africa’s best comedians and even represented Africa in Montreal, Canada at the Just for Laughs Festival.
Donovan Goliath first burst onto the comedy scene in 2010 when he took to the stage at the Comedy Underground in Melville, Johannesburg, proving a hit from the start as people rolled in the aisles with laughter. This was all the inspiration he needed to keep writing and performing. He has been entertaining South Africans ever since, and it’s been a great ride.
He may be the youngest of the three, but that has not stopped Nicholas from rapidly ascending the entertainment ladder. He is a highly sought-after MC, a regular on the comedy circuit, and a regular on TV (having appeared in three popular Comedy Central stand-up specials).
During the two-day festival, The TicketPro Dome will be completely transformed into a Nickelodeon wonderland inspired by the channel’s colourful on-screen worlds. There will be two sessions each day, with morning sessions starting at 9:00 am and afternoon sessions starting at 15:00.
Tickets for NickFest are on sale at www.ticketpros.co.za and select Edgars, CNA and Postnet outlets, priced R290 per head, or R270 per person for a family of 4-6 people. Groups of 10 or more people enjoy a discounted price of R250 per head. Entrance is free for children younger than two. Entrance to the Slime Area costs R150 per person (tickets sold separately; kids under 12 must be accompanied by an adult).
NickFest 2017 is brought to you by Nickelodeon (DStv channel 305) in conjunction with Glen21 Entertainment & KinderJoy.
