Paramount Pictures has pushed back the release date for Paramount Pictures & Nickelodeon Movies' upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants movie to summer 2020.
Tentatively titled SpongeBob SquarePants 3 and The SpongeBob Movie, the theatrical film, the third feature film inspired by Nickelodeon's hit animated series SpongeBob SquarePants will now be released in theaters on Friday 31st July 2020. The movie was initially scheduled to hit theaters on Friday 2nd August 2019, during the series’ 20th anniversary year.
The SpongeBob Movie had been announced in 2015 with Paul Tibbitt returning to direct and a voice cast including Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, and Mr. Lawrence. The last SpongeBob pic, 2015’s Sponge Out of Water, grossed $315 million worldwide, while The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie grossed $140 million worldwide in 2004.
Additionally, Paramount has removed an untitled Nickelodeon hybrid movie scheduled for 2020 from their upcoming release calendar.
Paramount and Nickelodeon have several movies in the pipeline, including: Amusement Park (Friday 15th March 2019); a Henry Danger feature film; a The Loud House movie; a Are You Afraid of the Dark? film (Friday 11th October 2019); and a live-action Dora The Explorer movie (2019).
