Emma Stone Reveals She Once Auditioned For "All That"
Veteran Saturday Night Live host Emma Stone hasn't always have great luck when it came to sketch comedy shows.
Despite being a longtime fan of Saturday Night Live, Emma never auditioned for NBC’s signature sketch show.
However, Emma revealed during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that she once auditioned for Nickelodeon's beloved kid’s comedy sketch show, All That - a show that launched the careers of Nick Cannon, Kenan Thompson, Amanda Bynes, Jamie Lynn Spears, among many others! Unfortunately for the La La Land star, the audition didn't go as well as she hoped it would.
When Stone was 12, she traveled from Arizona to attend an open casting call for All That, but was unaware that she had to prepare her own original characters for her audition.
“I thought they were going to give us sketches,” Stone said. “And then five minutes before I went in the room they said, ‘You need to have three characters when you come in the room.’ So I was like, ‘Okay,’ and then I made up a couple of characters.”
Despite not getting the gig, Stone’s characters were pretty hilarious especially given that she created them mere minutes before her audition.
“I remember that one was a cheerleader that couldn’t spell what she was cheering,” she said, before reenacting her impression with a "Be Aggressive" cheer that goes horribly astray. “And then there was another one that was actually pretty nuts that was a babysitter who is possessed. So as she’s reading books to the kids, she’s like, ‘and then Goldilocks and the (demon voice) three bears,’ and she catches her head, and is like, ‘Sorry about that. Sorry about that.’ And then would keep reading,” Emma continued, before launching into an exorcist impression in the middle of reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears. "I did not get that. It's shocking, right?"
More Nick: Nick Cannon Hints At New "All That" Reunion!
It's not all bad for Emma, though, as the Oscar-nominated actress eventually got to appear on Nickelodeon when she guest starred on the iCarly episode "iFind Spencer Friends" in 2012.
But if Emma had starred in All That, then her hosting duties on SNL would have made for a fun reunion with former All That cast member Kenan Thompson. Maybe one day they can get together and create a “what if” scenario where Emma and Kenan play Randy and Mandy, the chefs who love cooking with chocolate.
Even though Emma never got cast on All That, at least fans will get to see her guest host Saturday Night Live for a third time this weekend.
Watch Stone reenact these hilarious characters in the clip below!
As much as it would have been great to have seen 12-year-old Emma on Snick, this is also a pretty fantastic reminder to never get discouraged — even when things don’t seem to work out the way you want. Also, um, always be prepared. Especially when you’re auditioning for a sketch show.

Nickelodeon Lights Up New Holiday Special "Albert" With Rendering Technology Redshift
Nickelodeon gave itself an early Christmas present when it went into production on its first animated TV movie, the networks brand-new holiday special Albert, set to debut Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. PT/ET on Nick USA, and on Nickelodeon channels worldwide soon after.
The story follows a tiny Douglas fir, voiced by Saturday Night Live cast member Bobby Moynihan, that dreams of being a Christmas tree and leaves its suburban nursery for the big city. The film was directed by Max Lang, Oscar-nominated for animated shorts The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom.
In order to achieve the look of the film that the makers wanted, the production team working on the CG movie turned to Redshift, a super-fast rendering software that gave them more control over lighting, and allowed them to create the feel of such classic stop-motion-animated holiday specials as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman.
“When we got the greenlight for the project, conversations began about what the movie should look like,” Nickelodeon's Senior Vice President (SVP) of Franchises and Library Content Chris Viscardi, an executive producer on Albert, told Variety. Both 2D and CG were discussed as options, since Nickelodeon’s artists are adept at both, but the team decided to use CG to tell a story that has the appearance of Rudolph and Frosty. “We really liked the tactile look of stop-motion, where you feel you can reach through the screen and actually touch the characters and the world.”
That's when Nick’s senior VP of animation production David Steinberg and his crew stepped in. “What I love about my job here is that every project is different and requires different tools and a different approach,” says Steinberg. “So when Chris and Will [McRobb, Steinberg’s producing partner] said this was the aesthetic we were looking for, we talked with our team about the best way to move forward.”
Lighting and compositing supervisor Tobias White had seen a demo of Redshift and recommended the software, which leverages a computer’s graphics card rather than its CPU. “The added power gave us the opportunity to do much quicker rendering and total global illuminations,” Steinberg explains. “It gives things an aura and a sense of real-world lighting.”
More Nick: Westfield, NJ Brothers Will And Aaron Eisenberg Create Nickelodeon's First Christmas TV Movie, "Albert"!
The technology also allowed Nickelodeon to do all of the lighting, rendering, and final compositing in-house, instead of using an outside vendor, which is part of the studio’s normal production process. For Albert, Bardel Entertainment in Vancouver did the character animation, but sent the layers back to Nickelodeon, where the production team could maximize the look with Redshift.
“We have an incredible group of artists who are used to working at a TV pace,” says Steinberg. “We were able to leverage their smarts and their ability to move quickly to be able to make a higher-quality movie in a shorter time than that of the big feature studios.”
Viscardi says the filmmakers got the result they wanted. “I’m really proud to say that I know we’ve pulled it off,” he says. “It really looks tactile and the textures are really bright and cool.”
Steinberg adds that that experience has expanded Nickelodeon's toolbox. “Now that we know what Redshift can do, we absolutely will be talking about it again when we see projects that need this kind of lighting.”
