Why "As Told By Ginger" Still Feels So Real 10 Years Later
Nickelodeon viewers first met Ginger Foutley more than 15 years ago, following along as the teenage student made her way through three seasons and dozens of awkward junior high situations. At the time, As Told By Ginger was celebrated for how real, and even personal, it felt — something that comes across even now, a decade after it ended. For the show's writers, it was personal.
“A lot of Ginger’s stories were borrowed from my childhood, and the childhoods of the people working on the show. I identified with her a lot,” creator Emily Kapnek tells EW about her time on the series. “It was a personal show and [Nickelodeon] let it be that.”
The Emmy-nominated series followed the adventures of Ginger as she and best friends ventured into the weird and unknown.
Ten years after the Nicktoons series finale, EW caught up with Kapnek to talk all about Ginger.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: One of the things that really resonated with fans was the authenticity of the show. Was that important to you from the beginning?
KAPNEK: Absolutely. The year that I wrote the pilot, I think, was the year that Welcome to the Dollhouse came out, which was a hugely influential movie for me. I so much identified with that character and I just kept thinking, “Why has no one done an animated show that really looks at all of the angst of being that junior high school age [when] you’re so awkward and want to fit in but also want to stand out [and] not knowing how to do both. That was the whole motivation. Plus, just a healthy dose of reality. I didn’t feel there were a lot of cartoons that were really honest and dealt with real issues that kids were dealing with. The plan was to have Ginger clearly grappling with a lot of the milestone stuff that kids deal with, [like] the pressure to fit in, the pressure to look a certain way, shave her legs, etc. It’s like they would never have let us tell a story about drug pressure or whatever, but we had an episode called “Stuff Will Kill You” that was Ginger getting hooked on coffee and caffeine. It was our answer to that.
The show was also unusual in that Ginger and her friends actually changed clothes and aged.
I feel like that idea came from Mark Risley, who was a director that worked on the show. I think he actually pitched the idea that they grow up and their outfits change. It just made so much sense to me. To that end, we wanted the [characters] to continue ageing every year that the girls got older. It would make the show feel that much more real and lend authenticity to these animated characters, to have them actually get older, change their hair, their looks, and even graduate the school that we saw them in.
Looking back, what are you most proud of from the show’s run?
I’m proud of Ginger as a character. It’s not really one specific thing. But to get to tell a show about a girl whose dad doesn’t show up when she’s expecting him to, whose appendix ruptures, [who] gets broken up with, and has these dark poems. I just felt like she was such a three-dimensional two-dimensional character. That part of it is exciting. To tell stories that I felt really were rich and complex — in a format that I didn’t think had really done that before — it felt a little exciting and, not to be too lofty about it, but a little bit groundbreaking for me. Just in the animation world, at that time, there wasn’t tons of stuff like that on the air.

How "Harriet The Spy" Still Inspires Michelle Trachtenberg, 20 Years Later
It's been 20 years since Michelle Trachtenberg made her big-screen debut starring in Harriet the Spy, Nickelodeon's first-ever theatrical movie. Since then, the 31-year-old star has gone on to earn 55 acting credits, including roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, EuroTrip, Gossip Girl, and more, but it’s her turn as the writer and elementary school spy, Harriet M. Welsch, that’s left a lasting impression. “I’m fully WGA [Writers Guild of America] and a writer and have sold several projects. I feel like [I’m living] a Hollywood version of Harriet’s life,” Trachtenberg told Entertainment Weekly.
Though she can’t disclose much about her upcoming projects quite yet, Trachtenberg, who sold her first project at 23 (it was about a serial killer — “I’m so weird,” she says), hints that she’s currently putting together “a period piece that spans about a 30-year decade, starting in the ’50s. It’s a true story.” There’s also the pilot that she wrote about an “accessories editor who always wanted to be a writer.” The Brooklyn native is convinced that her notebook-obsessed alter ego would approve: “Harriet would be proud.”
Aside from her writing, Trachtenberg finds other reminders of Harriet on a daily basis. “I still have her yellow, plastic binoculars that say 'Harriet the Spy' on my library consul with different books and memories. I also have the original book by Louise Fitzhugh on my desk to always inspire me. My love of writing came from reading and being Harriet the Spy. Writing changes people’s worlds.”
For Harriet the Spy's Harriet M. Welsch, not even scrawling the "PRIVATE" across a composition notebook could keep snoops at bay. The observant heroine of Louise Fitzhugh's beloved children's book and its 1996 film adaptation learns this lesson the hard way after her classmates discover Harriet’s not-so-nice musings and retaliate by dumping paint onto her during art class. Twenty years after the movie’s release, director Bronwen Hughes and star Michelle Trachtenberg, who starred as Harriet, relive the blue moment with EW.com.
Harriet the Spy marked Nickelodeon’s first feature film, but still, some parents thought it was too dark, even suggesting that it touched on suicide.
BRONWEN HUGHES: When your friends turn against you as a kid, it’s the end of your life as you know it. I wanted the scene to feel true. It wasn’t some happy-go-lucky comedy moment with blue paint, but a devastating psychological assault.
MICHELLE TRACHTENBERG: It was a really hard scene because in my own life, I’d been bullied up until the day I graduated. It was emotional, which was the point.
HUGHES: I was interested in assembling a cast of young actors who didn’t have a false bone in their bodies. They understood deeply how this scene should feel. Most had been subjected to dirty tricks, or had inflicted them on others. We shot it during the middle of production because by then, you have confident kids who’ll try anything. And it’s kind of a naughty dream come true to be encouraged to throw paint around…
Production went through all types of paint until settling on the water-based tempera variety used in elementary schools.
TRACHTENBERG: The paint was so cold! My trailer was covered in it, and they even had to hook up extra water tanks to my shower. I’m so pale that I actually got dyed. I had patches of blue that didn’t come out for a while.
HUGHES: We did it in as few takes as possible. I didn’t feel the need to physically devastate Michelle to get [the emotion] out of her. She’s a fantastic, natural, instinctive actress.
TRACHTENBERG: I wasn’t scared, but it was hard to have that many people grabbing [at me]. Those paper towels were really scratchy, and I remember the girls saying, “Sorry, we’ll go lighter.” I had to separate myself from Michelle and be Harriet — that many people ganging up on you would make anyone go bananas.
Harriet, dripping in paint, runs home through the streets of New York City, though production took place in Toronto in the winter of 1995.
HUGHES: It was Paramount’s financial decision to make Toronto look like New York, although to tell you the truth, nothing looks like a row of brownstones and stoops like New York, so we just started choosing great locations to create a visual experience.
TRACHTENBERG: It was literally zero degrees outside, and while everyone was standing by ginormous electrical heaters in parkas, I was in a T-shirt, covered in wet, cold paint, running down the street. My mom was the furthest thing from a stage mom — she only ever cared about my safety — but she was like, “Only two takes. She’s not getting sick!” Bronwen was so cool and knew exactly when she got it.
To film the underwater bathtub scene, the crew shot below a steel-framed Plexiglas tank on a platform.
TRACHTENBERG: Water has always been holy, dangerous, and cathartic, and that’s what Bronwen captured. As a kid, I was able to hold my breath for a really long time, and I remember my mom dug her nails into Bronwen’s arm. She was terrified that I was drowning, even though we were all safe and there was a lifeguard. I was a very odd 10-year-old.
HUGHES: It represented the worst moment of Harriet’s life, but she’s no shrinking violet, which is what I loved about her forever.
TRACHTENBERG: I was a tiny leaf of a waif, but I remember thinking, “Oh my God, I’m going to break the Plexiglas, destroy the cameras, and we’re all going to go down!”

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina & MADRID & NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Viacom Inc. (Nasdaq: VIAB, VIA) and Telefónica S.A. today announced the acquisition of Televisión Federal S.A. (Telefe), one of the main free-to-air channels in Argentina, by Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN). The transaction has been concluded for a total amount of US$345 million dollars in cash.
The transaction adds one of Argentina’s most popular television networks and biggest content producers to Viacom’s fast-growing portfolio of international TV networks and digital properties. Telefe reaches 95% of all households in Argentina, a country of 43 million, and has attracted approximately 33% share of viewership year-to-date in 2016. The network produces more than 3,000 hours of Spanish-language video content each year, including seven of the top 10 programs currently airing locally, and has a library of 33,000 hours of local content. By combining Telefe with Viacom’s popular pay TV networks, which include MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and Paramount Channel, this deal further strengthens VIMN’s position in Argentina and Latin America.
With this transaction, Telefónica takes one step further in its asset portfolio management, based on value creation and strategic positioning.

Since its arrival in Argentina twenty-six years ago, Telefónica, which manages 26.8 million subscribers in the country, has invested approximately 15 billion euros in infrastructure, including spectrum capital expenditures. Between January and September 2016, Telefónica Argentina’s investments have increased by almost 35% in comparison with the same period in 2015, with the aim of expanding its communications network and providing its customers with new connectivity and browsing experiences. The above once again confirms the Telefónica Group’s firm commitment to a connected Argentina as a key player in the digital revolution, providing support for locally announced future investments exceeding 36,000 million pesos over three years (2016-2018).
Telefe will fall under the direction of Pierluigi Gazzolo, President of VIMN Americas. The acquisition builds on Viacom’s long and successful track record of investment in Argentina, beginning with the launch of MTV in 1993. Viacom’s portfolio in the market now includes 12 branded pay TV networks, including Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Comedy Central, Paramount Channel and VH1, among others, reaching audiences from pre-schoolers to adults; a suite of authenticated TV Everywhere mobile apps; multiple on-the-ground events and experiences; and an extensive consumer products catalogue. VIMN has maintained a local office in Buenos Aires since 1995.
Terms of the agreement
Under the terms of the agreement, Viacom will acquire all of Telefe’s brands and assets, including:
* Telefe in Buenos Aires Capital and Gran Buenos Aires, one of the country’s leading free-to-air networks, initially launched as Tele Once in 1961. The network’s diverse range of programming includes Educando a Nina, Loco x Vos, Susana Giménez, Pesadilla en la Cocina and Telefe Noticias.
* Eight wholly-owned channels in the interior of the country, including Canal Cinco in Rosario, Canal Siete in Neuquén, Teleocho in Córdoba, Canal Ocho in Mar del Plata, Canal Ocho in Tucumán, Canal Nueve in Bahía Blanca, Canal Once in Salta and Canal Trece in Santa Fe
* Telefe Internacional, a pay TV channel seen throughout the Americas and distributed globally to ten million subscribers across 17 countries
* Significant multiplatform presence through applications such as Mi Telefe (My Telefe) and Telefe Noticias (Telefe News), a multi-channel network called UPlay founded by Telefe and an e-commerce partnership with Mercado Libre
* Twelve production studios which have a combined total of 12,000 m2 of production space
* A library of over 33,000 hours of content currently distributed in more than 100 countries in 35 languages
The acquisition was financed from Viacom’s existing cash balances. The transaction is expected to be accretive to Viacom’s fiscal year 2017 earnings. The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals.

Sneak Peek Of The Epic Season Finale Of "Power Rangers Dino Super Charge", "Edge Of Extinction", Premiering 11/19 On Nickelodeon USA
To celebrate Nickelodeon USA premiering the epic season finale episode of Power Rangers Dino Super Charge episode "End of Extinction" on Saturday 19th November 2016 at 12:00pm ET/PT, the official Power Rangers YouTube Channel has unveiled a fantastic sneak peek preview from the brand-new PRDSC episode, which you can watch in the super video clip below!:
In the action packed Power Rangers Dino Super Charge season finale, "Edge of Extinction, Pt. 2" (#620), when the Rangers' Base is attacked, the Rangers must use every weapon in their arsenal to keep the Energems from the villain's grasp and save the world once and for all!
Following the premiere of the season finale of Power Rangers Dino Super Charge season finale, Nick USA will debut Power Rangers Ninja Steel, the 24th season of the hit franchise, which will introduce fans to the next generation of Power Rangers, in January 2017!
Saban's Power Rangers Ninja Steel starts deep in space, where Zircon is the reigning champion of the most popular intergalactic game show in the universe, and monsters battle to prove who is the mightiest warrior. Zircon is determined to become invincible by controlling the mythical Spirit Crystal, which contains six supernatural Ninja Power Throwing Stars. The only thing standing in his way is a new team of heroic teenage Power Rangers who possess the Spirit Crystal. The evil Zircon sends his warrior contestants down to Earth to steal the Crystal, where each epic battle against the Rangers is broadcast throughout the universe. Together, the Rangers must master their arsenal of Throwing Stars, Zords and Megazords, each made of legendary ninja steel, in order to stop this evil threat and save our planet from destruction. The series will be based on Shuriken Sentai Ninninger, Toei's 39th ninja-themed Super Sentai special effects series in Japan.
