Tune Into Nickelodeon's Brand-New Show "School of Rock", Premiering Tonight At 9:30pm ET/PT On Nick USA And YTV Canada
Catch Nickelodeon's brand-new musical comedy series School of Rock, premiering tonight at 9:30pm ET/PT, right after the 2016 Kids' Choice Awards, only on Nick USA and YTV in Canada!:
From the NY Post:
'School of Rock' star gives Jack Black role a 'surfer dude' swagger
It's been more than 12 years since "School of Rock," the movie starring Jack Black, hit theaters, but the musical comedy is having a sudden comeback.
A Broadway production by Andrew Lloyd Webber opened in December and now Nickelodeon is premiering a TV version of the story, which centers on Dewey Finn, a down-on-his-luck musician who poses as a substitute teacher at a prep school. Taking over the lead role in the series (debuting Saturday at 9:30 p.m.) is Tony Cavalero, a member of LA improv company The Groundlings, who counts Black as one of his idols.
"People have always compared my comedic style to his and say that I sound a lot like him," Cavalero, 32, tells The Post. "But ... I never wanted to imitate him. There's going to be more of a surfer dude to Dewey than in the past. I know Jack loves physical comedy but there’s going to be more physical comedy than we saw in the movie with the character."
In "School of Rock," Dewey uses music to teach his middle-school students about topics like Shakespeare and inspires them to create a secret rock band. Cavalero and the kids play their own instruments and record the songs for each episode — which this season include covers of "What I Like About You" by The Romantics, "Lips Are Movin" by Megan Trainor, "The Kids Are All Right" by The Who, "We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister and "Heart Attack" by Demi Lovato. (Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy also guest stars).
"Every song we break down and work with a coach and actually learn because it’s pretty hard to fake that kind of stuff on-camera," he says.
Though Cavalero does not have children of his own (he and his wife, Annie, whom he met at The Groundlings, do have three rescue dogs), he says learning from role models in martial arts and Eagle Scouts as a kid helped him prepare for working with young actors on set every day.
"We really just had fun, that was my end goal before every take," he says. "Without that, improv dies and the scene dies. The kids are such pros that it wasn’t as hard as you would think."
While Cavalero hasn't seen the stage musical yet (he plans to meet the cast when he visits New York next week), he doesn't feel any competition with his Dewey alter-ego.
"The story and the tone of 'School of Rock' is perfect for Broadway and Nickelodeon,” he says, “so the more the merrier."

The episode profiles Mohler, a 17-year-old from Lynbrook, N.Y., who helps bring smiles to the faces of sick children by making hospitals a kid-friendly place. Airing monthly on Nickelodeon, The HALO Effect highlights teens who "help and lead others" (HALO) in their community and inspire others to do the same. Raymond Mohler, Jr. helps children cope with their pain, fear and isolation of being in a hospital by providing fun activities and toys to help keep their minds off their illnesses. Mohler was inspired by his own hospitalization at the age of four, when he developed a rare hip joint disease that left him in a double leg brace for two years. Although his disease was not life threatening, he wanted to help kids who were not as fortunate to go home. On his sixth birthday, Mohler took half of his unwrapped presents to the hospital and gave them out to the kids, earning the nickname "Little Saint Nick." He loved giving back to the kids so much that he created a non-profit organization, the Little Saint Nick Foundation.
The Little Saint Nick Foundation is dedicated to changing the way children view hospitals by making them more kid-friendly. Throughout the year, Mohler holds toy drives, provides gift bags to children, donates electronics to pediatric centers and grants wishes to sick children. Since its inception, the Little Saint Nick Foundation has donated over 500,000 toys, entertainment centers, electronics and wishes to various hospitals. In recognition of his commitment to helping hospitalized children, Nickelodeon's The HALO Effect will award a $10,000 grant to Mohler's organization.
In each episode of The HALO Effect, the profiled teen will issue a "HALO Effect Challenge," a call-to-action encouraging inspired viewers to participate in their cause and join the HALO movement. As part of Mohler's "HALO Effect Challenge" he is encouraging everyone to post a video of themselves doing a bad dance for a good cause or post a selfie donating a toy to The Salvation Army using #HaloEffectChallenge. Kids and families can visit www.salvationarmyusa.org/halo for fun ways to get involved. For more information on Raymond Mohler, Jr. and his challenge, viewers can visit www.nick.com/haloeffect.
The HALO Effect launched in 2013 as a year-round initiative recognizing one deserving teen every month for their work to help and lead others in their community. The initiative was built upon Nickelodeon's HALO Awards, an annual concert event honoring young community leaders with a grant for their organization and scholarship funds. To date, more than 50 teens across the country have been honored and have received more than $400,000 in grants to fund their non-profit organizations.
The HALO Effect series expands Nickelodeon's ongoing commitment to the HALO movement by giving an in-depth look into the inspirational stories of teens who are eager to share the issues and projects important to them and excited to engage others to achieve impact. The monthly series is hosted by Sydney Park (Instant Mom) and executive produced by Nick Cannon and NCredible Entertainment, as well as Morgan Spurlock, Richard Arlook, Jeremy Chilnick, Matthew Galkin and Ethan Goldman of Warrior Poets.
Nickelodeon, now in its 36th year, is the number-one entertainment brand for kids. It has built a diverse, global business by putting kids first in everything it does. The company includes television programming and production in the United States and around the world, plus consumer products, online, recreation, books and feature films. Nickelodeon's U.S. television network is seen in more than 90 million households and has been the number-one-rated basic cable network for 20 consecutive years. Nickelodeon and all related titles, characters and logos are trademarks of Viacom Inc. (NASDAQ: VIA, VIAB).

Immediately following the 2016 Kids' Choice Awards, Nickelodeon will debut its newest live-action comedy School of Rock at 9:30 p.m. (ET/PT). Based on the feature film, the half-hour series follows a group of overachieving prep school students who band together and learn to rock out when they meet their new, unconventional substitute teacher Dewey Finn. Throughout the school year, these middle-school classmates find themselves navigating relationships, discovering their unknown talents and learning lessons on loyalty and friendships.
Saturday night kicks off with a brand-new episode of Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants, featuring comedy legend Betty White, at 7:30 p.m. (ET/PT). In "Mall Girl Pearl," Pearl gets a job to be cool like her friends, but the only place that's hiring is Grandma's Apron, the lamest store at the mall owned and operated by the elderly Beatrice (voiced by Betty White). When Pearl's friends including Nocturna (voiced by Aubrey Plaza), a brooding teenage Goth girl who works at Scorched Coral, make fun of Pearl's new job, Beatrice proves that age is nothing but a number.
