Viacom and Canvs Partner to Decode Complex Millennial Language in Marketing Campaigns for the First Time Ever
Original Viacom Inc. Press Release via Business Wire:
Viacom and Canvs Partner to Decode Complex Millennial Language in Marketing Campaigns for the First Time Ever
Canvs Fuels Viacom Velocity's Updated Echo Social Graph 2.0, Offering Marketing Partners Unprecedented Analysis of Consumer Emotions by Identifying 56 Unique Feelings
January 25, 2016 01:30 PM Eastern Standard Time
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Viacom Velocity, Viacom's (NASDAQ: VIAB, VIA) integrated marketing and creative content team, today announced a partnership with Canvs, the technology platform that measures and interprets emotionality in language. The alliance provides an unprecedented advantage to Velocity's clients by measuring consumers' emotional reactions to marketing campaigns.
Velocity's updated Echo Social Graph product ("Echo 2.0."), Viacom's proprietary tool that measures the effectiveness and virality of custom creative marketing campaigns, will integrate Canvs' emotional analysis to deliver deeper insights to marketing partners about the consumer impact of a campaign. Canvs' sophisticated capability tracks a broad range of 56 unique emotions, which is a huge increase over the three general feelings – "positive-negative-neutral" – typically tracked by sentiment analysis. Additionally, Canvs' extensive database is uniquely keyed into millennial slang and social media language.
Until now, Canvs has focused mostly on translating audience feelings about television shows, but Echo Social Graph's advanced capability to track social media conversations for clients across five platforms –Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, and Instagram – opens new ways to utilize Canvs.
"Viacom's Echo Social Graph has already been providing clients a unique advantage in measuring social media campaigns by mining data on five social media platforms," said Lydia Daly, Vice President of Viacom Velocity. "Layering Canvs' analytics into Echo 2.0 deepens the insights we provide our clients like no one else can in the industry, and our team uses this information to ensure that we deliver our partners' brand messages with maximum effectiveness. Finding the most innovative ways to connect creativity and data science is what keeps us - and our clients - ahead."
Canvs' capabilities are especially notable for deciphering millennial jargon, such as "Bae" and "on fleek," as well as translate words that have double meaning, such as "sick." Canvs' depth of interpretation means it keys into language nuances, like finding "love" expressed 30,000 ways on social media.
Echo 2.0 will tap into Canvs' sophisticated database of millions of pop culture words and phrases, which accounts for misspellings to ensure accuracy in interpreting feelings as millennials intend them. "Trippy," "awkward," "boring," "enough said," "goosebumps," "guilty pleasure," and "mindblown" are among the 56 feelings interpreted by Canvs.
"Our partnership with the Echo Social Graph now enables advertisers to tap into the power of emotions to inform client's marketing, research, and advertising decisions," said Jared Feldman, founder and chief executive at Canvs. "Viacom has helped define culture for decades, and we are honored to help its advertisers understand its audiences with a level of nuance and speed that has not been previously possible."
The partnership will be unveiled this month at Viacom Velocity's third annual "Roadshow," which introduces new products and capabilities to the marketing community ahead of the Upfront season. The Roadshow, which travels to New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, will be hosted this year by Michael Ian Black of Comedy Central's "Another Period."

Devon Werkheiser Launches Web Series Spin-Off From "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide"
For three years, Ned Bigby (Devon Werkheiser) from "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide" gave viewers tips for surviving the emotional roller coaster that is middle school. Fans learned how to handle "bullies, insane teachers and gross school lunches," and even found out what to do if a rogue Weasel breaks into school!
But what about the years after middle school? The show unfortunately ended before Ned and his friends started high school, so fans had to manage that obstacle all on their own. And for those who went to college? Same deal. Thankfully, Werkheiser is breathing new life into "Ned's Declassified" with a brand new web series called "Devon's Life Survival Guide"!
With the first two episodes launching today, Monday 25th January 2016, past and present fans of the show can finally add more Ned Bigby tips to their arsenal.
"It feels like it's been a long time coming, but I finally became conscious of it, maybe in September of 2015," Werkheiser told MTV News on the phone.
The 24-year-old actor and musician said he kept getting requests about doing a high school or college survival guide, so he decided to revamp his YouTube channel for the series, making it "about universal life lessons and stuff that we’re all going through."
The positive responses from fans during his Reddit AMA and from "Ned's Declassified" articles written for MTV News also helped inspire Werkheiser to create the series. A huge part of what made the Nickelodeon show such a big hit was its overall message to young audiences. Werkheiser describes the heart of the show as, "No matter who you are, however weird you are or quote-on-quote cool you are, or whatever, it's OK to be who you are. We're all in this together and we're gonna get through this."
New episodes will debut every Monday on YouTube, with videos lasting 3-10 minutes each, depending on the topic. Werkheiser will divide the episodes up into seasons, aiming for 25 episodes in Season 1.
Werkheiser wants to use the beginning of the series to focus on having a conversation with the audience and building a community in the videos' comments sections. He does plan on bringing some of his former cast members on the show, but not right away. "I wanted to make sure I could build a foundation of me doing it on my own to start, but I absolutely plan on seeing how I can incorporate the old 'Ned's' cast and other people as well," he said. "I'm very excited to see how this thing grows and evolves.
"If I can help even one kid watching it get through something a little more gracefully, a little smoother, with a little more love, then that really excites me and then I know I'm doing something good in the world," he added.
Sounds like Werkheiser really is the sweet, caring, funny Ned Bigby we all know and love! Like they say, life imitates art.

Nickelodeon Unveils Plot, Cast And Poster Of "The SpongeBob Musical"
Entertainment Weekly has exclusively unveiled the cast, plot and poster of Nickelodeon's upcoming The SpongeBob Musical!
Newcomer Ethan Slater has been cast as the absorbent, yellow, porous protagonist of The SpongeBob Musical, the forthcoming stage adaptation of Nickelodeon's hit original animated series (Nicktoon) and media franchise, "SpongeBob SquarePants"!
As co-conceived and directed by Steppenwolf member Tina Landau, The SpongeBob Musical, which will make its world premiere in Chicago in June 2016, will attempt to bring the Nickelodeon icon and his cast of undersea friends - including Starfish Patrick, Octopus Squidward, and deep sea-diving Squirrel Sandy - above the water and onto the proscenium in a traditional musical of very non-traditional circumstances.
With his sing-song voice and perpetual sunniness, SpongeBob SquarePants lends himself to starring in a musical; with his bright yellow hue, square head, and literal being a sponge, he's perhaps less natural to do so looking like an ordinary human being.
In 2008, Nickelodeon hired Landau from a pool of directors who pitched conceptual approaches to bring the beloved children's character to the stage. Landau's winning concept involved non-literal but suggestive character design (see: the key art below, showcasing the very human Slater's passing link to the very non-human sponge), an imaginative plundered playground setting, and a proprietary stage movement vocabulary.
"Before there was even a story, from very early on we did movement and physical workshops to explore the idea of whether we could really create these characters onstage without using literal representations of what they look like in the cartoon," Landau tells EW. "The DNA is the same but the form is so radically different, we're not approaching it literally. We're not trying to take the cartoon and put it onstage. We're trying to create a live theatrical event."
From there, playwright Kyle Jarrow came aboard to craft the story: The SpongeBob Musical follows a day in the fictional underwater town of Bikini Bottom, where the citizens have just learned that a nearby volcano named Mount Humongous will erupt at sundown the next day. Amid the antics and fantasies of the community over the ensuing 24 hours, SpongeBob takes it upon himself to save the day and rescue his city from certain destruction. It's an original story not pulled from the television series, says Landau.
Joining principal characters SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Sandy, Plankton, Mr. Krabs, and Gary (a surprising bit of stagecraft) are many peripheral characters from the series, though not every Bikini Bottomite will get their Equity card (Mrs. Puff and Old Man Jenkins made the cut; superheroes Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy did not). Slater, who graduated from Vassar in 2014, will be joined in the cast by Lilli Cooper as Texan squirrel Sandy Cheeks, as well as an ensemble of theater veterans including Gaelen Gilliland, Curtis Holbrook, Stephanie Hsu, L'ogan J'ones, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Mark Ledbetter, Kelvin Moon Loh, Vasthy Mompoint, JC Schuster, Abby C. Smith, and Jason Michael Snow. Additional casting is on the way.
The decision to keep the characters human and not opt for puppetlike conceits (seen in similar toon-to-Tony adaptations like The Little Mermaid or The Lion King, both from competitor Disney) was a creative decision network-approved and kid-tested. "We brought in different age groups and were most worried they were going to say, 'But he's not square!'" she recalls of previewing SpongeBob's human concept to the core audience. "The main response was, 'We finally got to see him in real life.' They loved it. They felt they were getting to spend time with him in his authentic form."
Landau describes the entire production as "scrappy, inventive, and wacky"; the design aesthetic of SpongeBob's undersea world is forged from found objects on the ocean floor. "It's the same way that Bikini Bottom is," she points out, citing Dadaism. "There's a bucket, and someone says, 'That's a restaurant,' and so it's [Plankton's restaurant] the Chum Bucket. In our production, you might have a cluster of pool noodles and someone can say, 'Look at that kelp,' and it's kelp. It's a lot of unexpected materials that create our own makeshift, colorful, psychedelic world of Bikini Bottom."
In a sense, the same method applies to the production's original music, which pulls dozens of accomplished singer-songwriters into one cohesive score, shepherded by music supervisor Tom Kitt (Next to Normal). Along with Nickelodeon's music department, the musical's creators wrangled a bouncy roster from Cyndi Lauper and the Flaming Lips to Steve Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Panic! at the Disco, and Lady Antebellum - as well as a song from the late David Bowie.
Landau presented each songwriter with plot and lyric prompts, essentially taking an informed but risky guess in assigning each musical act a very specific story beat: T.I. has written a nihilistic, rabble-rousing rap for Plankton akin to "Ya Got Trouble" from The Music Man. They Might Be Giants gives Squidward his big dance number involving a chorus of tap-dancing sea Anemones. John Legend penned a ballad - though Landau clarifies that the only romance in the show is between Plankton and his computer wife, Karen. "We very specifically asked all of the artists to write how they write, and not try to do what they think Nickelodeon or SpongeBob would sound like," Landau adds. "What's amazing is, when we hear them sung by our performers, you can tell exactly who wrote which song. We really wanted that difference."
The SpongeBob Musical begins its world premiere performances on Tuesday 7th June 2016 at Broadway in Chicago's Oriental Theatre. From there, the limited engagement runs through July 3, 2016, and a Broadway run is thereafter expected in the 2016-17 season.
SpongeBob's musical future could have veered any number of creative directions, but Landau is confident in the imaginatively designed, incongruously scored approach she and Nickelodeon have honed over the past seven years - or 17, if you consider SpongeBob's journey to Broadway began when the character first debuted back in 1999. Landau hopes her production honors the most important ingredients of the world inhabited by the iconic pop culture pore-bearer.
"When we first talked to Steve Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob, I said to him, 'What is absolutely essential to this world?' recalls Landau. "And he said, 'The light, the sky flowers—and bubbles.'"
