Nickelodeon Commissions Brand New Family Comedy Show "The Thundermans"; Orders 13 Episodes

The entertainment news website Deadline.com is reporting that Nickelodeon has announced the exciting Nickelodeon News that, after ordering the pilot, Nickelodeon has decided to greenlight the brand new live-action Nickelodeon original family comedy series "The Thundermans" to become a full television series and has ordered 13-episodes!

As part of the pickup, the network has recast one of the two leads, with upcoming Nickelodeon Star and actor Jack Griffo replacing Tyler Peterson who played the part in the pilot. Created by Jed Spingarn, the show is about The Thundermans, a typical suburban family that happens to have astounding superpowers. At the center of the action are the 14-year-old Thunderman twins (Griffo, Kira Kosarin), who share the same bathroom, the same school, and the same annoying little siblings. Their only difference? The sister is a super student with a super sunny disposition who super looks forward to being a superhero someday, and her twin brother is a super villain. Rosa Blasi and Chris Tallman play the parents; Diego Velazquez and Addison Riecke also co-star.

"The Thundermans" marks the third pilot from Nickelodeon's most recent batch of pilots to get a series order, following "Sam & Cat" and "The Haunted Hathaways", which both were picked up for 20 episodes. Nickelodeon greenlit the pilot for "The Thundermans" at Nickelodeon Upfront 2012. Nick is expected to announce more brand new shows and pilots at Nickelodeon Upfront 2013. Jack Griffo is repped by LB Talent Agency and AEF.

Boston College's "The Heights" Newspaper Names Former Nickelodeon President Herb Scannell As A 'Person To Watch'

The 'Metro' column of The Heights, the independent student newspaper of Boston College, has, in the following article, named the former President of Nickelodeon and TV Land and the current President of BBC Worldwide America, Herb Scannell, as a "Person to Watch"!:
Person to Watch - Herb Scannell

Remember when Saturday mornings consisted of Nickelodeon’s Rugrats, Doug, and Spongebob Squarepants? Do episodes of Doctor Who or Dancing with the Stars stream on your Netflix account? Both the nation’s children and adults can thank Herb Scannell, BC ’79, for his contribution to television.

Currently the President of BBC Worldwide, America, Herb Scannell is in charge of managing BBC’s brand and business in the U.S., bringing quality British programming to American audiences. In an exclusive interview with World Screen Newsroom in January, Scannell said, “The BBC will always be the British Broadcasting Corporation and represent the good work of the UK. What our audience [the American audience] really likes is that British drama continually innovates—just the fact that there are so many series that come and go means that they are always coming up with something new and different.”

During Scannell's time at BBC Worldwide, America, the popularity of shows such as Doctor Who, the science fiction show about a time traveller, and the 1860s drama Copper have skyrocketed. Doctor Who earned the title as the most downloaded show on iTunes in 2011, defeating Glee and Modern Family in the process.

Before entering the television industry, Scannell worked at WHN Radio after graduation. A passion for radio has defined Scannells life for years. In 2009, Scannell reflected about his time at and since college with writers at the Boston College Alumni Magazine. In response to the question, “What is one thing everyone should do while at BC?” Scannell responded, “Join an activity that you love. For me, that was managing the student radio station, WZBC. I’m proud that we helped usher in some new music from local artists and punk bands.” His love for radio still holds true today, as evident by his current position as Chairman of New York Public Radio, one of the numerous boards he serves on related to his passion for television and public affairs.

Scannell’s career in television began in 1981 after he joined The Movie Channel (which later merged with Showtime). He left the position he had attained as Director of Program Promotion at The Movie Channel/Showtime to join Viacom’s Nickelodeon in March 1988 as Director of Programming. He held other positions such as Vice President and helped develop Nick Jr. and Nicktoons before being named President of Nickelodeon and TV Land in 1996. Among the shows, Scannell helped launch during his time at the network was the widely-acclaimed Dora the Explorer. In 2003, he was named President of Nickelodeon Networks and Vice Chairman of MTV Networks.

After resigning from the positions on Jan. 5, 2006, Scannell co-founded and served as CEO of Next New Networks with four other media executives in March 2007. A web-television company, the network was later acquired by YouTube/Google in 2011.

In the 2010 press release announcing Scannell’s current position, John Smith, CEO of BBC Worldwide commented, “Herb has a tremendous track record of success in developing and extending innovative brands…” If his success is any indicator so far, Scannell will continue to innovate and develop hit television shows for many Americans.

Broadcast Reports Viacom International Media Networks May Be Looking To Launch Nickelodeon UK On Freeview; MTV Denies Any Current Plans

The television industry news website Broadcast is reporting the Nickelodeon UK News that Viacom International Media Networks, which owns and operates the MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central Viacom channels, is exploring the possibility of acquiring a second electronic program guide (EPG) channel slot on the British digital terrestrial television service Freeview, which may see the company launch a Nickelodeon block on DTT, allowing Nick UK's programming to reach a wider audience.

The move is being worked on at a global level and David Lynn, executive vice president and managing director of MTV Networks UK and Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, is understood to be involved.

Broadcast understands that VIMN has approached a number of EPG brokers and agents about acquiring an additional Freeview slot, however, an MTV spokeswoman has denied the project: "Like any broadcaster, we have speculative discussions about our content in multiple markets on a regular basis, but we genuinely have no news regarding any collaborations with partners in the UK at this time. And we have absolutely no plans to buy a Freeview channel or slot."

VIMN already operates free-to-air channel Viva on Freeview, which airs series including the Nicktoon "Spongebob Squarepants" and Comedy Central's "South Park":

The move would see the company launch a Nickelodeon block on DTT, echoing a wider trend in the international kids’ market, with the likes of Disney launching free-to-air networks around the world.

However, it is believed that the terms of this licence preclude the company from airing more kids’ content via DTT, leading it to look for another slot.

The company’s plans are sensitive as a result of its wide-ranging deal with pay-TV platform BSkyB. Viacom International Media Networks UK and Ireland and BSkyB are joint venture partners in Nickelodeon and Comedy Central, and the News Corp-backed firm’s sales arm has been in charge of advertising sales across VIMN’s bouquet of channels since 2010.

A DTT presence would allow Nickelodeon to reach more eyeballs in the UK and would provide a boon for its consumer-products division, which would be able to strike additional licensing
