Curtain Rises On Viacom's New Movie Channel
From C21Media:
Curtain rises on Viacom film channelViacom is the parent company of the Nickelodeon brand, which includes Nickelodeon Movies.
Viacom International Media Networks’ (VIMN) new Paramount Channel has debuted in its first market, Spain, ahead of a global roll-out.
The 24-hour movie network, which is due to start broadcasting on Friday, will be available as a free-to-air network on Spanish digital terrestrial TV and will offer more than 600 titles per year.
While primarily it will be home to Paramount’s catalogue of content, airing films such as The Godfather and American Beauty, in Spain it will also feature some local titles and a small selection of films acquired from rival studios Miramax and Sony.
“The cornerstone of the Paramount Channel in all markets will be Paramount product, and then, based on the specifics of the market, we’ll supplement that,” VIMN president and CEO Bob Bakish told C21.
When the channel rolls out globally, Bakish said he wants it to be part of VIMN’s “brand bouquet around the world,” alongside its existing brands such as MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central. He wouldn’t rule out launching the net as a pay-TV brand in some markets.
“We have strong positions and strong teams in all the key markets around the world. We’re working on refining a pretty long list of opportunities for Paramount,” he said, claiming the Spanish launch would be “the first of many.”
The Paramount Channel is part of VIMN’s wider plan to strengthen its adult-focused brands around the world, demonstrated by its ongoing Comedy Central expansion.
“Even as recently as the last six months we’ve stepped up significantly, launching Comedy Central in Africa in December, India in January, all of Latin America in February, and in fact this week we’re also announcing we’re launching in Russia,” said Bakish
The Paramount Channel is the fourth VIMN network to air in Spain, alongside DTT network MTV and pay channels Nickelodeon and Paramount Comedy. The company first trailed plans for the launch at Mipcom last year. C21 revealed earlier this year that Spain would be first.

Nickelodeon Star Victoria Justice On The Success Of The Hit Nickelodeon Show 'Victorious': "It's Mind-Blowing"

Victoria Justice has admitted she is blown away by the success of her television series Victorious.
The actress stars in Victorious as an aspiring singer attending a performing arts school filled with wacky students.
In an interview with Parade, Justice said she never expected the Nickelodeon series to become a worldwide hit.
"[Fame is] flattering, but what blows me away is the fact that the show airs around the world. That's incredible," she declared.
Justice went on to reveal that she realised she wanted to become an actress at a very early age.
"I didn't need the spotlight, but I've always been extroverted," she explained. "In middle school, if my mum and best friend dared me to dance in line at Kinko's, I did it without any shame."
Victorious airs Saturdays on Nickelodeon
Justice also co-stars with Johnny Knoxville and Chelsea Handler in Fun Size, opening on October 26 in the US and October 31 in the UK.

Ireland Becoming An Animation Nation
From The Irish Independent:
Animation nation
Earning us Oscar nods and new jobs, Joe O'Shea asks how we've become an animation nation.
Don't tell Wallace & Gromit or Peppa Pig, but there is a new gang of Irish cartoon heroes in town and they could be threatening their careers.
The Irish animation sector is going through what one major player calls a "golden age", winning contracts with the big international networks and production companies and causing great concern for the traditional powerhouses of the cartoon industry.
The multimillion-euro deal just signed between Dublin studio Boulder Media and industry giant Disney, which will immediately create 50 jobs, underlines why animation is being hailed as the "star performer" of the Irish film and TV industry.
Irish studios such as Brown Bag, Jam Media and Boulder are all hiring staff, snapping up talented young Irish animators almost as soon as they graduate from dedicated courses at Ballyfermot College and IADT in Dun Laoghaire.
And traditional players in the UK, such as Aardman Studios (Wallace & Gromit) and Ragdoll Productions (Teletubbies) have warned the British government that competition from Ireland and elsewhere could spell "terminal decline" for their animation industry.
The major animation studios in the UK recently met with British Chancellor George Osborne to warn him that the tax breaks given to studios in Ireland, France and Canada are making it increasingly difficult for them to compete.
Mr Osborne responded by announcing tax breaks for UK film and animation production in last week's budget, telling the Commons that it was the policy of the UK government to "to keep Wallace and Grommet exactly where they are".
However, while the Chancellor has finally acceded to calls to level the playing field, recent deals between Irish studios and the likes of Nickelodeon, the BBC (CBeebies) and Cartoon Network mean the initiative remains on this side of the Irish sea.
Animator Jim Duffy Dies At 75
From Variety:
Animator Jim Duffy dies at 75
He was key figure at L.A.'s Klasky Csupo
TV animator Jim Duffy, who worked at Hanna Barbera and spent most of the last two decades supervising Nickelodeon's animated slate at Klasky Csupo, died Friday, March 23, after a long battle with cancer. He was 75.
Duffy was born in the U.S., grew up in the U.K. and shuttled between London and Los Angeles during a career spent not only in animated TV series but also commercials and even National Coal Board safety films, working variously as a director, animator, producer, writer, tracer-painter, storyboard artist and designer.
He picked up three Daytime Emmys, three additional nominations plus several Primetime Emmy noms for his "Rugrats" efforts. He also received two Primetime Emmy nominations for Nick show "As Told by Ginger" as well as Daytime Emmy noms for "Captain Planet and the Planeteers" and "Aaahh!!! Real Monsters." These series were all produced at Klasky Csupo. Other shows on which he worked at the L.A. animation outfit include "Rocket Power," "Duckman" and, most recently, "All Grown Up."
Duffy began as an animator in the late 1970s at Hanna-Barbera, working on series including "Smurfs," "Super Friends" and "The New Scooby and Scrappy-Doo Show." During the 1980s he worked on series including "G.I. Joe," "Ghostbusters" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."
Duffy also worked on his own on shortform projects that screened at a variety of festivals including Oberhausen, Tours, Nyon, Lucca, Bilboa, Zagreb and Annecy.
His ex-wife, Cella Nichols Duffy, is a producer at Klasky Csupo. He is survived by their children: Barbara Duffy, an assistant director-editor, Vera Duffy, a writer-editor, and James Duffy, a designer-sculptor.
Services will be held Saturday, March 31, at 2:30 p.m. in the old brick church at Forest Lawn in Hollywood.
