Rugrats prodco unveils digital projects
Hollywood toon studio Klasky Csupo, best known for Nickelodeon hits such as Rugrats, has launched a digital division and unveiled its first projects.
The Emmy-winning studio's early digital projects will include a YouTube channel that runs 20 unseen pilots that were developed under a previous long-term development deal with US cablenet Nickelodeon.
The company has also developed Ollie Mungo: Adventures in the Apocalypse, an online comic series starring a blue skateboarding zombie, and Splaat!, comprising webisodes that feature the comments of an urban teen philosopher. The latter will run on YouTube, Facebook and mobile apps.
The studio has been relatively quiet since its golden age in the late 1990s, during which the development deal with Nick lead to series such as Rugrats, Rocket Power and The Wild Thornberrys. It is also known as the studio that created The Simpsons’ unique look in the 1980s.
The move into digital has been a long time coming. As far back as 2006, Klasky Csupo’s VP of creative affairs Brandon Scott told C21 the firm was looking to diversify its business after the partnership with Nick came to an end.
Ex-husband and wife team Arlene Klusky and Gabor Csupo launched the company in 1982.
