'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Co-Creator Teases Upcoming Story Arc for the Next Avatar: 'It's Gonna All Be Connected'

Michael Dante DiMartino, the co-creator of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, has teased the next arc of the series in a recent reveal, coyly stating, "It’s all gonna be connected. You’ll see."

Avatar Aang and Avatar Korra

In a new episode of The Illustration Department Podcast, DiMartino made one of the first official comments from a series creator about the upcoming project. Though sparse with words, DiMartino did respond to a fan’s question about the next Avatar in the series, with the fan asking about whether the next Avatar’s arc would connect to Aang and Korra's.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Sequel Will Be 'All Connected' With Next Avatar's Cycle

In response, DiMartino stated, "Oh, it’s all gonna be connected. You’ll see. There’s connections with the new stuff." He also stated that each Avatar does have to "deal with the ramifications of what the previous Avatar did" and may even have "similar issues because the previous Avatar didn’t really deal with that issue. That part is a deliberate connection between the Avatars."

DiMartino and his co-creator, Bryan Konietzko, have scarcely commented about the upcoming series, first announced by Avatar News in 2022. The series is confirmed to be about the next Avatar cycle following Avatar Korra, who will be an Earthbender. No other explicit details were revealed by DiMartino, but several rumors have surfaced since December 2024 regarding the upcoming series.

In a report from Knight Edge Media, who claim to have an inside source, the next arc’s Avatar will be Korra’s immediate successor and will take place 100 years later. An unknown cataclysmic event has led to the destruction of the world, forcing Avatar Korra to rebuild it, which ultimately leads to both her death and the end of the four nations. The next Avatar will reportedly be a young Earthbending girl who is an amputee with one missing leg and an identical twin. According to the source, the twins were separated at birth by the White Lotus; one (the Avatar) was left in poverty, while the other was raised and trained in luxury by the White Lotus. Knight Edge Media later reported that the Avatar would be named "Pavi" and that the series was set to come out in 2027. However, none of this information has been confirmed by an official source.

While the report is unconfirmed, DiMartino spoke in the podcast extensively about trying to differentiate characters, stating, "When we did Korra, and now we’re doing new stuff, and it’s always like, 'Is that too similar to what Aang went through, or is that too similar to what we did with Zuko?" He also stated, "That’s why we made Korra an older girl who wanted to fight, let’s make her as different as possible personality-wise from what Aang was."

Given the content of the rumors from Knight Edge Media, a twin Avatar, or possible Avatars, would certainly be very different from Avatar Korra and Avatar Aang. Nonetheless, it would not be the first time that an Avatar has had a twin; The Reckoning of Roku, the fifth novel in the official Chronicles of the Avatar graphic novel series, confirmed that Avatar Roku had a twin named Yasu, who died in an accident before Roku was confirmed to be the Avatar. However, since this was never explored in the animated series, a twin Avatar would still be completely new to the screen.
