Paramount Global Reports Third Quarter 2024 Earnings Results

Paramount Global (NASDAQ: PARA, PARAA) today (November 8) announced financial results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2024. "Our hit content drove strong performance in Q3 where Paramount+ added 3.5 million new subscribers, solidifying our position as the #4 global SVOD service. Our DTC segment successfully delivered profitability for the second quarter in a row, improving by more than $1 billion over the past four quarters, and, across the company, we continue to successfully execute non-content cost reductions that will result in $500 million in annual run rate savings. With two very strong quarters under our belt, it’s evident that we have clear momentum and that our plan is working thanks to our very talented teams and creative partners."

DIRECT-TO-CONSUMER

OVERVIEW
DTC profitability improved significantly year-over-year. Sports, including the return of the NFL and UEFA, originals like Tulsa King, which saw the biggest global debut in platform history for season 2, and Mayor of Kingstown, as well as post-theatrical releases, such as A Quiet Place: Day One and IF, all drove acquisition in the quarter. Pluto TV continues to benefit from strong engagement resulting in increased monetization.

Q3 FINANCIALS

▪ DTC revenue increased 10% year-over-year.

– DTC subscription revenue grew 7%, driven by year-over-year subscriber growth and pricing increases for Paramount+.

– DTC advertising revenue rose 18%, reflecting growth from Paramount+ and Pluto TV.

– Paramount+ revenue grew 25%, driven by year-over-year subscriber growth and ARPU expansion.

▪ Paramount+ subscribers increased 3.5 million in the quarter to 72 million.

▪ Paramount+ global ARPU expanded 11% year-over-year.

▪ DTC adjusted OIBDA increased $287 million year-over-year to $49 million, reflecting revenue growth and cost efficiencies.

TV MEDIA

OVERVIEW

TV Media benefited from a powerful combination of sports, news and entertainment. CBS live news channels saw strong growth in minutes viewed year-over-year, The Daily Show continued to grow across streaming, linear and social platforms, MTV’s Video Music Awards had its biggest audience in four years, and The Challenge delivered its highest share in franchise history.

Q3 FINANCIALS

▪ TV Media revenue decreased 6% to $4.3 billion, primarily driven by lower affiliate revenue and fluctuations in licensing revenue.

– TV Media advertising revenue decreased 2%, reflecting declines in the linear advertising market, partially offset by higher political advertising, and the recognition of revenue underreported by an international sales partner in prior periods.

– TV Media affiliate and subscription revenue decreased 7%, driven by subscriber declines and a 2-percentage point decrease from the absence of pay-per-view boxing events, partially offset by price 
increases.

– TV Media licensing and other revenue decreased 12%, reflecting a lower volume of licensing in the secondary market.

▪ TV Media adjusted OIBDA decreased 19% to $936 million.

FILMED ENTERTAINMENT

OVERVIEW

Paramount Pictures’ diverse film slate continued to deliver with the success of A Quiet Place: Day One, which set a franchise record for the biggest opening at the global box office and has grossed $261 million worldwide to date. Transformers One has grossed $127 million at the global box office to date.

Q3 FINANCIALS

▪ Filmed Entertainment revenue decreased 34% to $590 million.

– Theatrical revenue decreased 71%, reflecting the number and timing of releases in the quarter compared to the prior year.

– Licensing and other revenue decreased 6%, as lower revenue from home entertainment and the licensing of film library titles were partially offset by higher studio facility revenue compared to last year, which was impacted by the labor strikes.

▪ Filmed Entertainment adjusted OIBDA increased $52 million versus the prior year period, which was impacted by the labor strikes.

SKYDANCE TRANSACTIONS

Completion of the Skydance transactions is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. The transactions are anticipated to close in the first half of 2025. Until then, Paramount continues to operate in the normal course of business.

CBS announced today full season orders for the new comedy POPPA’S HOUSE and the drama NCIS: ORIGINS, the newest addition of the global franchise.

NCIS: ORIGINS has added a brilliant new dimension to the NCIS franchise with an origin story of Leroy Jethro Gibbs and a cinematic ’90s experience that features distinct characters, stories and crime solving. POPPA’S HOUSE excels with the dynamic father/son chemistry between Damon and Damon Jr. and their family-inspired stories that bring this comedy to life. These shows fit seamlessly into our Monday night lineup while resonating with viewers on CBS and Paramount+,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment.

According to VideoAmp and internal streaming data, with seven days of multiplatform viewing, NCIS: ORIGINS’ premiere has been seen by 9.0 million viewers and POPPA’S HOUSE by 6.41 million viewers. Streaming alone on Paramount+ and CBS TVE (CBS.com/ CBS app) posted significant gains from their time period premieres last season with NCIS: ORIGINS up +54% from NCIS: HAWAI’I and POPPA’S HOUSE up +137% from BOB HEARTS ABISHOLA.

POPPA’S HOUSE, starring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr., features Wayans as legendary talk radio host and happily divorced “Poppa” who has his point of view challenged at work when a new female co-host is hired, and at home where he finds himself still parenting his adult son, a brilliant dreamer who is trying to pursue his passion while being a responsible father and husband. Hello fellow Shellheads! Today is a momentous day for us here at Super Evil Megacorp as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate is finally live on PC, available now via Steam – with full Steam Deck compatibility – and Epic Games Store. We’re a humble team with big ambitions and this has been a huge learning experience for us. We are so grateful to everyone that’s come on this journey with us and we’re looking forward to continuing to push forward!


It’s only been a few months since we announced the PC version, but in that time, we’ve achieved a lot of goals, the most exciting of which was releasing the Demo version of the game. We released the demo as part of the Steam Next Fest event and were overwhelmed with the amazing reactions we received from players, achieving a Very Positive user review rating. This was one of the bigger Next Fest’s in Steam's history, with over 2,700 games partaking, and we are overjoyed that we placed in the top 50 overall most-played games

It was amazing to personally get the chance recently to engage with some of the TMNT fan base at New York Comic Con. The passion and dedication of the fans was incredible and it’s very humbling to be able to be a part of the TMNT family. It was clear how important the franchise, its characters and stories are to so many people and I am very proud of our contribution.

The PC launch will bring support for 4K resolution, increased framerates, updated controls and many quality-of-life additions. But this is only the beginning; we will be keeping a close eye on all of the comments and feedback we receive and incorporating it into our roadmap for post launch. I’d highly recommend joining our Discord server so you can report any issues directly to us and hopefully together we can help resolve them. 

It’s not just the PC though that is getting a release today. We have also updated the Nintendo Switch and Apple Arcade versions to include full cross-platform online matchmaking. Now, you can seamlessly find players to team up with from any platform at the tap of a button. We really believe that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate is best enjoyed with others and now it’s easier than ever to team up and stomp some Foot!

This really is still just the start for us and there are loads of exciting updates still to come so keep an eye out for more news coming from the Super Evil Lair. We’ll be revealing both paid and free updates, including Leaderboards, New Characters, New Levels and more. We're working as hard as we physically can to bring you everything you’ve asked for! ;) 

I am incredibly proud of the wonderful work of the team at Super Evil Megacorp as we continue our journey of transforming into a multiplatform studio and I can’t wait to surprise you all with some of the content being worked on right now.

Paramount+ will introduce its Premium and Advertising Tiers on 20 November, extending its multi-tier strategy and ad-offering across Europe

This Autumn’s content line-up includes two highly- anticipated new series, LANDMAN and THE AGENCY, as well as the latest seasons of acclaimed titles like YELLOWSTONE and LIONESS

LONDON, Nov.7th , 2024: Paramount+, the global streaming service from Paramount (NASDAQ: PARA, PARAA), will launch two new subscription tiers in the UK and Ireland this month, as part of the ongoing strategy to offer customers a choice of pricing options to enjoy its vast ‘Mountain of Entertainment.’

From 20 November, the ‘Basic (with ads)’ and ‘Premium’ plans will join the ‘Standard’ tier in the UK and Ireland. This will mark the introduction of the ad-supported plan to Europe and extend the Premium plan's availability, following launches in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico and France.

The new price structure for the UK and Ireland will create a great value entry point to allow more fans to access the platform and – with the launch of the ‘Premium’ plan – provide enhanced video quality, such as 4K UHD1 and streaming on up to four devices at once.

The ad-supported tier will also give advertisers access to a broad audience and premium content for targeted ad placements and highly engaging marketing opportunities.

The introduction of the new plans comes as Paramount+ debuts brand new and returning hits to the service this Autumn, including LANDMAN, the latest offering from Taylor Sheridan, starring Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore and Jon Hamm, among others; LIONESS, starring Nicole Kidman, Zoe Saldaña, and more; THE AGENCY – produced by George Clooney and starring Michael Fassbender & Richard Gere; plus the much-anticipated return of YELLOWSTONE, alongside UK original series like STAGS and INSOMNIA, plus a raft of premium content spanning blockbuster movies, kids’ and family favorites, reality hits and much more.

New price plans

The ‘Basic (with ads)’ plan will offer fans full access to the ‘Mountain of Entertainment’ on Paramount+ for £4.99 per month in the UK and €5,992 per month in Ireland, enabling streaming on one device at a time, in full HD1.

Priced at £10.99 /€11,99 per month, the ‘Premium’ plan will deliver an elevated viewing experience, with 4K UHD, HDR10, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos on selected titles.1 ‘Premium’ plan subscribers will also be able to stream on up to four devices concurrently, with the option to download content to watch offline.

The price of the existing ‘Standard’ plan will change to £7.99/ €8,99 per month, for ongoing access to the entire content offering on Paramount+, for up to two concurrent streams in full HD1, with the ability to download and watch on the go.

Black Friday deals

Ahead of Black Friday, Paramount+ is offering a promotion on its new ‘Premium’ and ‘Standard’ pricing. From 20 November (for the ‘Premium’ plan) and 22 November (for the ‘Standard’ plan), customers will benefit from special pricing on the first three months of a monthly plan or the first year of an annual plan. Both offers will run until 2 December.2

ABOUT GHOSTS:

GHOSTS is a single-camera comedy about Samantha and Jay, a cheerful freelance journalist and up-and-coming chef from the city, respectively, who threw both caution and money to the wind when they decided to convert Woodstone Mansion, which Sam inherited, into a bed & breakfast – only to find it was inhabited by the many spirits of deceased residents who now call it home. The departed souls are a close-knit, eclectic group that includes a saucy Prohibition-era lounge singer (Danielle Pinnock); a pompous 18th-century militiaman (Brandon Scott Jones); a ‘60s hippie fond of hallucinogens (Sheila Carrasco); an overly upbeat ‘80s scout troop leader (Richie Moriarty); a cod-obsessed Viking explorer from 1009 (Devon Chandler Long); a slick ‘90s finance bro (Asher Grodman); a sarcastic and witty native from the 16th-century (Román Zaragoza); and a society woman and wife of a 19th-century robber baron who is Sam’s ancestor (Rebecca Wisocky), to name a few. The opening of the B&B has been a source of intrigue, anxiety and curiosity among the spirits, but they will gladly put up with the commotion as long as they can continue to interact with a living inhabitant.

Nov. 7, 2024 – Paramount+ today revealed the full trailer for DEAR SANTA, the upcoming original holiday comedy from Peter and Bobby Farrelly – The Farrelly Brothers – which will premiere on the streaming service November 25. The movie, which is the service’s first original Christmas film, will premiere exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and the following day in the UK and Australia. Additional Paramount+ international market premiere dates will be announced at a later time. DEAR SANTA is the story of a young boy (Robert Timothy Smith) who mails his Christmas wish list to Santa with one crucial spelling error, resulting in a devilish Jack Black’s arrival to wreak havoc on the holidays.
