This year, Paramount is marking SpongeBob SquarePants' milestone 25th anniversary with a far-reaching campaign of celebrations and reflections on the brand’s impact across generations.
In the UK, SpongeBob SquarePants is broadcast on Milkshake! and is now in its 14th season. It is also the No.1 show on Nicktoons, Nickelodeon & Channel 5's Milkshake! in the UK and is also available to watch on Paramount+. In 2021, we also saw the launch of Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years which was the first-ever SpongeBob SquarePants spinoff. The CG-animated prequel follows 10-year-old SpongeBob SquarePants and his pals at sleepaway camp. In July 2021, the second spinoff, The Patrick Star Show, dedicated to the famous Patrick Star, made its debut.
SpongeBob SquarePants also includes three theatrical releases, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2005), The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015) and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run (2020). Together, these films have accumulated a combined box office of half a billion dollars. The most recent film, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, debuted internationally on Netflix, ranking No.1 in its opening weekend across multiple markets.
The franchise will see new content launch this year and in 2025. In July, a series of specially produced all-new 25th anniversary episodes, with Easter eggs and nods to fan-favourite moments, will debut on Nickelodeon and continue to roll out through the year.
Nickelodeon has also announced that it will be partnering with Paralympics GB to produce Play like a Sponge, a shortform series that inspires kids to find their inner SpongeBob as he cheers them on in their quest to learn about and sample new sports from the paralympic athletes ahead of the upcoming summer games.
In partnership with Netflix, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, an original CG-animated film about Bikini Bottom’s resident squirrel, is slated to debut on the platform in August this year, along with Plankton: The Movie next year. Furthermore, the recently announced fourth theatrical film, The SpongeBob Movie: The Search for SquarePants, from Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Animation is set to hit cinemas on December 19th, 2025.
In another on-screen development, a new DoodleBob short-form series will arrive on the SpongeBob YouTube channel this Summer in which we will see him use the magic pencil to redraw classic SpongeBob scenes starring himself as the main character.
