Like his predecessors, he had ambitions of conquering the world by bringing down the other nations - becoming supreme ruler. Strategically using Sozin’s Comet, he almost achieved his goal of becoming Phoenix King - but he was ultimately thwarted by Avatar Aang, who took away his bending abilities.
