Nickelodeon Universe amusement park at American Dream will lower lights, music and capacity to become more inclusive for those with sensory issues
East Rutherford, NJ - American Dream will host two sensory days at Nickelodeon Universe Theme Park on April 26 and 27.
The park will create a safe environment in the park by reducing sensory triggers between 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
During these two days, Nickelodeon Universe will be designed to minimize sensory triggers and promote a safe environment for the autism community by adjusting all lights — and limiting strobe lights. In addition, music will be turned down to a much lower volume and capacity will be limited.
"Lights will be adjusted and strobing lights will be at a minimum. Music will be turned low, and capacity will be regulated," Melissa Howard, Spokesperson for American Dream told Patch. "We are hoping that families attending the sensory days will feel welcomed and get the chance to comfortably enjoy the excitement at Nickelodeon Universe."
In 2018, one in 44 children aged 8 years was estimated to have autism spectrum disorder or ASD, according to the CDC. It's four times more common in boys than girls. So, some parks have adapted to be more inclusive.
Disneyland in Anaheim, provides specific guides for guests with autism. Then just outside Boston, there's Edaville Family Theme Park. Like American Dream, the park also hosts autism awareness events. But they also incorporate weighted blankets and puzzles on their trains cars to make the experience as comfortable as possible.
"American Dream strives to have an inclusive environment for all of our guests. We are exploring additional options for these sensory sessions at our other attractions, and extending to a weekly basis," Howard said.
All proceeds from the fountain in The Garden will go to Spectrum Works, a non-profit that gives young adults with autism job training, during April.
