HOLLYWOOD, Calif.--Feb. 03, 2021--Nickelodeon and CBS Sports, in partnership with the NFL, are teaming up again, this time to produce special multiplatform content to get kids and families excited in the lead up to Super Bowl LV on CBS.

The fun starts with the Nickelodeon Super Duper Super Bowl Pregame Spectacular, an original half-hour pregame show hosted by Nick stars Gabrielle Nevaeh Green (All That, Nickelodeon’s Unfiltered) and Lex Lumpkin (All That, Nickelodeon’s Unfiltered). The show will feature Super Bowl fun facts, “Nick-ified” season highlights and predictions of this year’s winning team with help from special guests. The special will premiere Friday, Feb. 5, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) and re-air multiple times over the weekend.

On Super Bowl Sunday, CBS’ pregame show, THE SUPER BOWL TODAY, which airs from 2 p.m.-6 p.m. (ET), will feature a specially produced segment of Nickelodeon’s game show Unfiltered, where Green and Lumpkin will try to guess the virtually disguised identity of one of the NFL’s biggest stars from Super Bowl LV. Additionally, a “Nick-ified” highlights package will air as part of CBS’ halftime coverage of Super Bowl LV, which features the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m. (ET) at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

While Nickelodeon will air its Super Duper Super Bowl Pregame Spectacular throughout the weekend, Super Bowl LV itself will air on the CBS Television Network. The game can also be streamed across devices on CBS Sports and NFL digital properties, via CBS All Access, and on mobile via the participating teams’ mobile properties, Yahoo Sports and other Verizon Media mobile properties. The game will also be available in Spanish on ESPN Deportes.

For kids and families watching the game on CBS and looking for second screen content, @Nickelodeon, @NFLonCBS, @CBSSports and NFL handles will feature “Nick-ified” highlights before and during Super Bowl LV. Kids can also interact with complementary content such as polls, trivia and games at NFLNickPlay.com.

These elements build on the success of the dual CBS and Nickelodeon production of the NFL Wild Card game on Sunday, Jan. 10, between the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears, which drew the highest viewership of Super Wild Card Weekend across both networks and gave Nickelodeon its biggest audience in nearly four years.

Said Brian Robbins, President of ViacomCBS Kids & Family Entertainment: “Our broadcast of the NFL Wild Card game was undoubtedly one of the greatest moments in Nick’s history, and the enormous positive response shows how big of an appetite there is for a kids and family-oriented sports production like ours. Given all that enthusiasm, it feels really good to team up again with everyone at CBS Sports and the NFL with pregame coverage and digital highlights that bring fun and slime to the biggest football game of the year.”

Added Sean McManus, Chairman, CBS Sports: “We are thrilled to continue our collaboration with Nickelodeon and build off the success and overwhelming positive response from the production of the NFL Wild Card Game on Nickelodeon. The 'Nick-ified' elements in our pregame and halftime programming, along with the second screen digital and social highlights, will be the perfect complement to CBS Sports' first-class broadcast of Super Bowl LV, allowing us to reach an even wider audience on Super Bowl Sunday across a variety of platforms as we continue to showcase the power of the ViacomCBS family."

Details of Nickelodeon and CBS Sports’ original kids and family content for Super Bowl LV weekend are as follows:

  • @NFLonCBS, @CBSSports, @Nickelodeon and a variety of NFL social handles (e.g., @NFLUp, @TheCheckdown) will post Nick-themed highlights and moments from Super Bowl LV, with voiceover commentary from play-by-play announcer Noah Eagle and Nickelodeon star Gabrielle Nevaeh Green.
  • CBS’ THE SUPER BOWL TODAY will feature a special sports-themed segment of Nickelodeon’s Unfiltered game show, hosted by Jay Pharoah. Nick stars Gabrielle Nevaeh Green and Lex Lumpkin will try to guess the identity of one of NFL’s biggest stars from Super Bowl LV, who is virtually disguised behind an animated 3D filter and voice changer.
  • CBS Sports analyst Nate Burleson will recap the “slime-lights,” highlights from the first two quarters of the game that have been “Nick-ified” with original on-field graphics and filters, during halftime on The CBS Television Network.
  • Nickelodeon will kick off Super Bowl LV weekend with the Nickelodeon Super Duper Super Bowl Pregame Spectacular, a half-hour pregame special hosted by Green and Lumpkin, featuring Super Bowl fun facts, “Nick-ified” season highlights and predictions of this year’s winning team with help from special guests. The Nickelodeon Super Duper Super Bowl Pregame Spectacular will premiere Friday, Feb. 5, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT), on Nickelodeon, and encore Saturday, Feb. 6, at 10 a.m., 4:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 7, at 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. (all times ET/PT). The special will also be available on Nickelodeon On Demand and the Nick App beginning Saturday, Feb. 6.
  • NFLNickPlay.com will serve as a second screen experience for kids and families on game day, where users can engage with polls, trivia, games and more.

CBS Sports and Nickelodeon’s special slime-filled presentation of The NFL Wild Card Game on Nickelodeon was Nick’s most-watched program among total viewers in nearly four years and the number-one cable telecast of the week with Kids 2-11 and Kids 6-11. Airing alongside CBS’ broadcast, the first-ever NFL telecast produced for kids and families generated more than two billion social media impressions and Nickelodeon was the number-one trending topic in the U.S. on Twitter during that afternoon.

The Nickelodeon Super Duper Super Bowl Pregame Spectacular is executive produced by Ashley Kaplan, Luke Wahl and Shawn Robbins, and co-executive produced by Barry Smoler. Jennifer Bryson serves as executive in charge of production.

Sean McManus is Chairman, CBS Sports and serves as Executive Producer for the Network’s coverage of THE NFL ON CBS and Super Bowl LV. David Berson is President, CBS Sports. No Super Bowl 2021 on Nickelodeon: Viacom opts to keep Chiefs-Bucs NFL title game on CBS only

The 2021 Super Bowl will reportedly not be simulcast on Nickelodeon. Instead, all eyes will be on CBS proper as Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take on Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

According to Newsday’s Neil Best, the network did consider having a kids-centric NFL broadcast on Nickelodeon before opting to go all-in on the main CBS broadcast.

CBS and Nickelodeon are both owned by the same parent company, Viacom, which allowed for an ambitious cross-platform broadcast earlier in the NFL playoffs. In addition to a normal CBS broadcast, the Wild Card game between the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints was simulcast on Nickelodeon in a broadcast that was targeted at a younger audience, featuring slime in the endzone and analysis that focused to explain the rules to younger viewers.

The broadcast was met with solid ratings, reportedly averaging over 2 million viewers, making it the highest-watch program on Nickelodeon in over four years. The success of the simulcast gave way to discussion over whether Viacom would repeat the experiment for the biggest American sports broadcast of the year, which is also set to air on CBS.

Ultimately, Viacom and CBS opted to focus on the single broadcast, showing that different companies have different approaches when it comes to high-profile sports broadcasts.

ESPN, for example, had roughly a dozen different broadcasts, simulcasts and alternate angles for the 2021 College Football Playoff National Championship Game between Alabama and Ohio State.

So, if you enjoyed watching slime fire off in the endzone, you’ll have to wait a while until the NFL and Viacom try it again.

However, Viacom will have some Super Bowl-related content available under the Nickelodeon brand. On Friday, Feb. 8 at 8 p.m. EST, Nickelodeon will air “The Nickelodeon Super Duper Super Bowl Pregame Spectacular,” featuring “Nick-ified” football highlights from the season. The broadcast will also are on Saturday, at 10 a.m., 4:30 p.m., and 9 p.m. It will also air Sunday, Feb. 7 at 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. It will also be available on-demand via the Nick app as of Saturday morning.

Nickelodeon to have big presence in CBS Super Bowl coverage

There might eventually be a kids-focused broadcast of the Super Bowl. It won't be happening this year.

Nickelodeon will still have a noticeable presence during Sunday's coverage on CBS. Following the success of Nick's presentation of an NFL playoff contest last month, CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus said there were some discussions about an encore for Sunday's matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before deciding to keep everything on CBS.

“It’s the biggest night of television for CBS, obviously, and that really is our motivation. It is all about getting as many eyeballs as we can on the CBS television network.,” McManus said. “Nickelodeon will have a real presence at the Super Bowl in some really creative ways.”

Two months ago, no one would have thought of asking McManus about possibly doing a kids-focused broadcast for the biggest game of the year. But the Jan. 10 wild-card game between the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints on Nickelodeon was a huge success. The game, which was also on CBS, averaged 30.65 million viewers — including 2.06 million on Nickelodeon — and generated 2 billion impressions on social media.

McManus is still surprised over the reaction the broadcast received.

“It’s the gift that keeps on giving to be honest with you," he said. "The reaction which you saw, was nuts. I mean, social media, legacy media, television, parents, kids, you know, the whole thing just blew up.”

CBS' Nate Burleson, the analyst on the Nickelodeon game, said the broadcast was a success because it was able to “speak a different language while explaining the same type of football that we all love. It spoke to different generations, people who are all kids at heart.”

Nickelodeon will air its own pregame special throughout the weekend, featuring network stars Gabrielle Nevaeh Green and Lex Lumpkin, who were also a part of the playoff broadcast.

During “The Super Bowl Today” pregame show on CBS on Sunday, Green and Lumpkin will be part of a segment based on Nickelodeon’s game show “Unfiltered.” They will try to guess the identity of one of the players who is disguised behind an animated filter and voice changer.

At halftime, Burleson will recap the first and second quarters with highlights presented with on-field graphics and filters first seen during the playoff game last month.

Besides halftime, there will be more “Nick-ified” highlights during the game on Nickelodeon, CBS and NFL social media accounts.

“Super Bowl Today” producer Drew Kaliski said Nickelodeon was in the pregame plans, but that more ideas came out of working with Green and Lumpkin during the playoff game.

“We were always talking SpongeBob or characters of shows on Nickelodeon that we could involve, but it just kind of hit us right in the face off the success of that game,” Kaliski said. “It was just like, OK, we have something but how do we take it to the next level, or kind of work with that element in our pregame show?”

CBS and Nickelodeon continue to explore when to do another NFL or sports telecast. Hall of Fame coach and CBS analyst Bill Cowher said the best time to do it would be the opening week of the season as a way to help old and new fans. Imagine not knowing the game and having someone trying to explain why if you only go 9 yards after three downs you punt the ball, but somebody else gets four downs, Cowher said.

He also brought up the differences in why the play clock is 25 seconds sometimes compared to 40 seconds.

“Think about the element of what you’re trying to teach our young people,” he said. “We also have everybody coming across to our country, they see we really love and have this energy, but what’s this game of football? I would say, `Go to a Nickelodeon telecast, they speak to you in terms where you might get a chance to understand it, then you can start to watch our show.' ”

Super Bowl LV: Strong Onsite Set Presence Supports CBS Sports’ Studio, Pregame Programming

Jack Morton-wrapped stage anchors Super Bowl Today pregame show inside Raymond James Stadium

Traditionally, the Super Bowl is one of the ultimate fan destinations in sports. For obvious reasons, this year’s Big Game has a quite different feel.

With only 25,000 fans permitted to be in attendance for Super Bowl LV at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium on Sunday and few tourists traveling to the event’s host city, CBS Sports needed to reconsider its plans for the scale, scope, and positioning of its onsite studio sets designed to support programming for the network’s four-hour pregame celebration on Sunday afternoon.

One of CBS Sports’ two studio sets at Raymond James Stadium

Super Bowl Today will kick off CBS Sports’ coverage of Super Bowl LV beginning at 2 p.m. ET. The primary pregame on-air crew of James Brown, Phil Simms, Bill Cowher, Nate Burleson, and Boomer Esiason will be broadcasting from a set positioned on the main concourse on the end of the stadium opposite its iconic pirate ship. Set-design company Jack Morton completely wrapped the set to prepare it for air.

In addition to the set inside, CBS Sports has a large set positioned outside the stadium. There are also numerous standup positions from which various talents will file reports.

“It’s an amazing setup in Tampa,” says CBS Sports Executive Producer/EVP, Production, Harold Bryant, who is working his eighth Super Bowl with the broadcaster. “We have gorgeous sets for our pregame crew, and we are going to capture this special Super Bowl. It has been an incredible experience. Many of the pieces [that have been produced for the pregame show] were done contact-less, and it still maintains its professional level. I tip my hat to our entire crew.”

Among the preproduced pieces that CBS brass are most excited about are a piece narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis on the story of Kenny Washington, the man who re-integrated the NFL (it was produced by Pete Radovich, Ellis Williams, Jelani Rooks, and Derek Ambrosi and written by Kayona Ebony Brown) and a celebration of the 30th anniversary of Whitney Houston’s iconic rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Super Bowl XXV (produced by Shawn Robbins and Niya Walker).

In addition, CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus teases that he is particularly excited about the game’s tease that will air at some point close to the game’s opening kickoff. “This has been a complicated year for us, as it has been for everyone. Getting shoots and interviews done across the country has been a challenge, but I’m very proud of what our team has accomplished.”

As for onsite facilities, the sets are more strategically positioned with much less incentive — given the game’s limited attendance of 25,000 — to have a presence out among the fans.

Drew Kaliski is producer and Bob Matina director of Super Bowl Today.

The ‘Nick’ Effect

CBS Sports’ pregame efforts are marked by a commitment to kid-centered programming.

Inspired by the success of the CBS-produced NFL Wild Card game between the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears on Nickelodeon on Sunday, Jan. 10, the child-focused cable network will broadcast Nickelodeon Super Duper Super Bowl Pregame Spectacular, an original half-hour pregame show hosted by Gabrielle Nevaeh Green and Lex Lumpkin. Both appeared on the Wild Card game broadcast.

“Our broadcast of the NFL Wild Card game was undoubtedly one of the greatest moments in Nick’s history,” said Brian Robbins, president, ViacomCBS Kids & Family Entertainment, in an official release. “The enormous positive response shows how big an appetite there is for a kids- and family-oriented sports production like ours. Given all that enthusiasm, it feels really good to team up again with everyone at CBS Sports and the NFL with pregame coverage and digital highlights that bring fun and slime to the biggest football game of the year.”

In addition, CBS’s pregame show, Super Bowl Today, will feature a specially produced segment of Nickelodeon game show Unfiltered, with Green and Lumpkin trying to guess the virtually disguised identity of an NFL player. A “Nick-ified” highlights package will also air as part of CBS’s halftime coverage of the game.

“The Nick-ified elements in our pregame and halftime programming,” adds McManus, “along with the second-screen digital and social highlights, will be the perfect complement to CBS Sports’ first-class broadcast of Super Bowl LV, allowing us to reach an even wider audience on Super Bowl Sunday across a variety of platforms as we continue to showcase the power of the ViacomCBS family.”

Nickelodeon’s Nickelodeon Super Duper Super Bowl Pregame Spectacular will premiere tonight at 8 p.m. ET.
