Spongebob Battle for Bikini Bottom Remake Release Date

Are you ready, kids? Approaching two decades since its original release back in 2003, Nickelodeon's most beloved cartoon show is coming back to the gaming world this summer. The '"rehydrated" version's release date has been confirmed by Publisher THQ Nordic via a tweet from Thursday.

In synonymous tone with the original, Spongebob's revamp will continue to have a storyline aimed at defending Bikini Bottom. Fans of the original game will appreciate the great lengths developer Purple Lamp Studios and publisher THQ Nordic have gone to keep the game true to its core. In an interview with THQ Nordic's Martin Kreuch, the producer stated that "staying faithful to the original was [their] prime objective." Like its predecessor, each level of Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated will incur that same distinct feeling.

Additionally, the developers have geared toward eliminating some of the prior game's annoyances while adjusting the updated one for modern consoles. Camera tweaks, movement adjustments, and dialogue animations have all been modified for this purpose.

With three playable characters in Spongebob, Patrick and Sandy, there a plethora of opportunities for exploring how each's unique skills will aid players in their virtual, underwater adventures.

Not only will an updated Spongebob game hit the digital shelves in the coming months, but fans can also expect a multiplayer mode, something the original Battle for Bikini Bottom did not possess. Maybe now you'll be able to face an actual Plankton attempting to steal the Krabby Patty formula.

The official release will be available for Playstation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Microsoft Windows. Spongebob Squarepants Battle for Bikini Bottom can also be pre-ordered on Steam.

It appears that sea-loving folks will have more to celebrate come June. We will finally visit the pineapple under the sea, as THQ Nordic has officially dated SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated for June 23. The remaster of the 2003 licensed game of Nickelodeon’s lovable sponge and his friends will release on both PC and consoles.

Heading underwater
Soon, you’ll get to explore Bikini Bottom with SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy. The evil Plankton has struck once again, and it’s up to you to stop his evil plans. Do battle with an army of wacky robots, meet familiar faces, and utilize our heroes’ unique skills.

Of course, as a remaster, you can expect some new additions and features. First off, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated will see high-end visuals and modern resolutions to let you appreciate SpongeBob and the gang even more. It adds new gameplay elements as well, including a cut boss fight with Robo Squidward. You’ll also find a multiplayer mode that pits you and a partner against waves of enemies in horde mode both offline and online. SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated is a remake of the 2003 cult classic. Here's what players can expect.

The 3D platformer game SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom was first released in 2003 for the Game Cube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox console -- with a slightly altered version on Game Boy Advance -- four years after the cartoon debuted on Nickelodeon. Although the original game earned mixed reviews initially, it has since grown into a niche interest with a strong fan following and many players use it for speed running.

This primes the game for a remake -- and SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated is currently available for pre-order ahead of its June 23 release. Here's a breakdown of the mechanics in the original game and what changes have been announced for the remake.

As Plankton's evil robots fill Bikini Bottom, playable characters Spongebob, Patrick and Sandy still have to help their friends with their problems. After choosing a character, players in Battle for Bikini Bottom are tasked with fighting off the robots and collecting golden spatulas to progress through levels, which are earned through mini quests like finding collectibles for Mr. Krabs and helping Squidward with his jellyfish sting. Each playable character has specific abilities that give them access to certain areas in each level and players have to play through each level as each character to complete everything.

SpongeBob is able to create bubble weapons and turn himself into a ball to roll around. Patrick’s can pick up "throw fruits" throughout the level, then throw them at buttons to unlock previously inaccessible areas, or at his enemies to defeat them from afar. There is also "freeze fruit," which will freeze parts of the level. Sandy is able to swing on Texas hooks and jump over large gaps. She can also use her lasso to hover and lasso some enemies. Sandy’s main attack is her karate chops, which is a favorite of hers from the show.

As for the new, Rehydrated version of the game, it will be a remake of the console version. Video game graphics are far superior to what they were when Battle for Bikini Bottom was released in 2003, which means gameplay will be much smoother. The story will be the same, with a few added missions that unfortunately were cut from the original game. One of the cut missions will result in a new Robo-Squidward boss fight. Another new development for the game is a multiplayer horde mode. This mode will be for both online play and split-screen.

The upcoming remake shows just how much companies listen to their fans. If it wasn’t for a strong fan following, it’s possible SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom would have probably gone down as just another kids game.
