The JCPD teamed up with ICNA Relief USA -- which aids the underprivileged and those affected by natural disasters -- and gave out some 300 bookbags filled with school supplies to local students at the West District stationhouse this afternoon (Saturday 11th August 2018), as part of the organization's #OneNationOneCause Back 2 School Giveaway Project, which is hosting drives in over 35 states and Puerto Rico, in 96 cities, over 30 days to send children to school with confidence.
"The whole idea is to give back to the community," Farhana Matin, director of operations for ICNA Relief, told NJ.com. "And also to eliminate poverty and crime, that's the main idea. The start is always from the school."
Children and parents eagerly waited outside for their goods and was kept entertained by Chase from Nickelodeon's hit CG-animated series PAW Patrol, and a clown who made balloon animals and swords for the kids.
Each child received a gray backpack with a folder, notebook, pencils, and other necessary school supplies.
Kerolos, 7, and his 4-year-old sister were excited to get back to their favorite thing at school -- writing and coloring.
However, for Amin and Kayla, both 9, science and math classes as well as meeting new friends are the things they're looking forward to when the school bell rings again.
The friendly environment allowed the kids to interact with one another, dance with Chase, and wait anxiously in line for their balloon animals.
"When we talk about community partnerships, this is kind of what we mean," Ilias Voutsas, former West District commander, said. "We need to do stuff together as a community and police department, not just when there are issues and problems, but when we get a chance to help the children, too."
ICNA Relief were so pleased with the turnout today, representatives said they may plan to do similar ones in the future.
