In additional news, eOne has secured a deal with HBO Europe which will see its hit preschool properties Peppa Pig and Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom air on its SVOD service – HBO GO – across Central Europe.
HBO Europe made available on HBO GO in the Kids section Series 1 of Peppa Pig and Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom in multiple CE countries last week, including Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Romania and will come to Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Macedonia and Bulgaria in spring 2018.
Both Peppa Pig and Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom are produced by UK animation studio Astley Baker Davies. Last May, eOne greenlit the production of 117 new Peppa Pig episodes, which will air from spring 2019 through to 2023.
Monica Candiani, eOne’s evp content sales, Family & Brands, said: “There is real demand for quality children’s programming that has proven universal appeal and we’re delighted that HBO Europe will be introducing audiences in Central Europe to these much loved and critically acclaimed animated series.”
Peppa Pig, particularly, has been on global spree lately, landing on Nordic broadcasters NRK (Norway), DR (Denmark), YLE (Finland) and SVT (Sweden), and on the Nick Jr. channel in India over the past year, and then heading to Japan’s TV Tokyo and Germany’s Super RTL in more recent broadcasting deals. The brand continues to be a powerhouse for eOne, with total retail sales of US$1.2 billion in fiscal 2017 (up from US$1.1 billion in 2016) and licensing and merchandising revenue of US$59.3 million.
Commissioned by Nick Jr. UK, Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom airs in more than 130 countries, including the US (Nick Jr.), Canada (Treehouse), the UK (Channel 5, Nick Jr.), Australia (ABC), Spain (Clan TVE), Italy (RAI), Brazil (TV Cultura) and Mexico (Televisa).
Additionally, in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Darren Throop, the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of eOne, revealed how the company became involved with the beloved preschool brand:
How did you become involved with the kids' property Peppa Pig?
"My most prized possession," he says of this souvenir, marking eOne's 2015 purchase of a controlling interest in Peppa Pig.
We bought a company called Contender, which was largely a TV-on-DVD business in the U.K., in 2007. They had a nascent family business with a couple of properties, one called Peppa Pig. One season had been produced of five-and-a-half-minute interstitials. The guy who was running the business said we needed to do a second season. It was on the bubble because it was about 3 million pounds [$4.2 million], but we decided to do a season two, and the ratings kept going up, and in 2009, we put some toys on the shelf in the U.K., and it took off. We now have over 300 episodes produced. If you look at a dollar profit generated from Peppa Pig, about 80 cents of that dollar is coming from license and merchandising; the rest comes from broadcast and digital. Peppa Pig averages 1.3 to 1.4 billion page views a month on YouTube, which makes it one of the biggest properties on the internet. And it's in the top three preschool brands in every territory around the world. We've signed a deal with Merlin Entertainment, where they are rolling out Peppa Pig theme parks, Peppa Pig hotels, Peppa Pig everything.
