Kiss Between Two Female Characters in 'Mysticons' May be Cut

A scene in an upcoming episode of Mysticons featuring a kiss between two female characters is reportedly in danger of being cut due to pushback from the show’s sponsors, an anonymous source close to the show told Overly Animated.

The proposed scene comes late in the show’s season one 40 episode run. Two versions of the episode have been fully animated, one with and without the kiss.

Either way, the people behind the show hope the romantic intentions are clear, as the episode also features a declaration of love between the two female characters.

The final decision on whether the kiss will air or not is still to be made and comes down to the show’s sponsors.

It is extremely important to have queer content in all-ages shows in order to normalize the feelings for young gay children who may have a hard time accepting their own feelings because they are told, and shown, that “normal” relationships are between opposite gendered people, so hopefully the scene will stay in.

It is important to note that the decision to leave the scene intact or not probably won't be made by Nickelodeon, but most likely Nelvana, who produces the show. Nickelodeon is open to LGBTQ+ themes in programming: Nickelodeon's hit animated series The Loud House has a married gay couple and a bi-sexual character in the show, and the networks The Legend of Korra ended with Korra and Asami, two of the shows female characters, embarking on a romantic relationship. The storyline is now being continued in a The Legend of Korra comic book series.

Mysticons is a contemporary urban fantasy series about four girls from different walks of life who are transformed into the legendary Mysticons. Arkayna, Zarya, Emerald, and Piper are drawn together by a prophecy to battle evil and protect the realm as unexpected heroes who work together to become epic warriors and ultimately, the closest of friends. The heroes team up as the stakes are raised when the evil Queen Necrafa is released from her prison and embarks on a mission to destroy them and their home, Drake City. The series is created and executive produced by Sean Jara (Johnny Test, Max Steel, Inspector Gadget), and launched on Nick USA in August 2017. Mysticons is currently rolling out on Nickelodeon channels globally.

New episodes of Mysticons currently air Sundays at 8:30am ET/PT on Nick USA. Fans can follow the adventure online: Mysticons.com, Nick.com/Mysticons | YouTube channel | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram.
