MTV and Nickelodeon parent Viacom has reported a 22% increase in fourth-quarter revenue, taking it over the US$4bn mark, while profit leapt by 19% to US$583m.
The company announced today that its board of director has approved a US$10bn stock repurchase programme on the back of the results, upping previous plans for a US$4bn buy-up.
Full-year figures include a 12% increase in revenue to US$14.91bn and a 22% increase in adjusted net earning from continuing operations to US$2.25bn.
The gains were attributed to a significant increase in profitability in Viacom's filmed entertainment division, principally due to the strong performance of Transformers: Dark of the Moon in theatrical and home entertainment markets, plus higher ancillary revenues, due in part to digital distribution.
There was double-digit growth in the company's Media Networks segment, which houses MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, Spike, BET and others.
The unit saw a 7% rise in worldwide advertising revenue and 11% growth in worldwide affiliate fees. It contributed US$2.29bn of revenue in the three months to September 30, up 8% versus the same period last year.
Over the full year, Media Networks delivered a 10% gain in advertising revenues to US$5bn and a 12% rise in affiliate fees to US$3.52bn, which more than offset a 2% decline in ancillary revenues.
"Creatively we are at the top of our game, powered by unique audience insights and connections, coupled with consistent investment in innovative programming at our marquee media networks, including MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and BET," said Viacom president and CEO Philippe Dauman.
"We enter a new fiscal year with a proven track record of managing our operations effectively in every economic environment. Our financial position is as strong as it has ever been, which allows us to continue to invest in the growth of our businesses, including new branded television networks in the US and internationally."
Viacom International Media president Bob Bakish told C21TV recently about his plans to expand Comedy Central globally.

Playmates Toys has named its marketing and distribution partners for its Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles line.
The Giochi Preziosi Group will handle European countries including the UK, Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Turkey. Playmates has appointed Headstart (Australia), Spin Master (Canada), Stadlbauer (Germany, Austria and Switzerland), Toy Triangle (Middle East and North Africa), Planet Fun (New Zealand), Concentra (Portugal), Gulliver (Russia) and Prima Toys (South Africa).
The TMNT toy line is due to launch in autumn 2012 in the US and Canada, coinciding with the premiere of the new CG-animated series from Nickelodeon. It will hit most international markets in 2013.
“We are privileged to be working with Nickelodeon to create the all new toy line for a whole new generation of kids and reaffirm the brand as an evergreen franchise,” said Thomas Chan, chairman of Playmates Toys.
“Together with the appointed distribution partners, industry leaders in their respective markets, we will deliver exciting Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toys to kids everywhere in the world.”

Nickelodeon India has acquired rights to all 700 episodes of Saban Brands' children's live-action series Power Rangers.
The channel, which is available in over 34.2 million households in the country, will show both the original version of the show and the new Samurai spin-off.
Nickelodeon acquired Indian rights to the property via distributor MarVista Entertainment. The pair has struck similar deals in other territories including the UK, Germany, Latin America and Australia.
AN eight-year-old Harlow girl has become a global singing sensation after a video of her covering pop star Nicki Minaj’s record Super Bass on the YouTube website received almost 20 million hits.
In the seven weeks since Sophia Grace Brownlee’s parents Dominic and Carly uploaded the clip of their daughter and her five-year-old cousin Rosie Grace McClelland performing the popular track, the youngster has appeared on chat shows in the UK, America and Australia and been offered acting roles with Disney and Nickelodeon.
The youngster, who lives in Old Harlow, also caught the eye of popular American comedian Ellen DeGeneres, who paid for both girls – dubbed ‘the mini Minajs’ – to go to California to appear on her primetime television show to perform with their idol.
"It has been an absolutely surreal few weeks," Sophia’s dad Dominic told the Star this week. "We obviously never realised how much attention she was going to get when we uploaded the video; it was meant to be a bit of fun.
"But by the end of the first day it had received 250 views and within a week I’d received an email from the producers of the Ellen show inviting the girls to appear on her programme.
"We were just stunned. It has been absolutely incredible."
According to Dominic, who owns a taxi firm in Harlow, only child Sophia has taken her newfound fame in her stride.
"She is actually known as being quite shy at school," he said. "All her teachers and classmates are just amazed.
"She is coping well, though. She’s obviously extremely excited but we are also trying to maintain as much normality as possible in her life.
"She still goes to school when back in Harlow and we have made sure to keep her up to date with schoolwork when travelling. We are very aware that she is only eight years old so don’t want to put too much pressure on her."
Since her duet with Minaj on the Ellen show – a video that itself has become another huge YouTube hit – Sophie has become a household name throughout America, with people stopping her in the street for autographs.
"The day she signed her first autograph I was the proudest dad ever," Dominic added. "She has now been taken on by an LA management company and had several scripts sent to her from Disney and Nickelodeon.
"It is just crazy. We are all very proud of her and excited to see where it all leads. I have to keep pinching myself to check it is actually real!"
Sophia and her family were this week flown back out to the States for a month to make a re-appearance on the Ellen show and to work out her next career move.
